Minimization of heavy metal toxicity in radish (Raphanus sativus) by strigolactone and biochar.

Due to the high solubility of Cd in water, it is considered a potential toxin which can cause cancer in humans. In plants, it is associated … sh shoot length (~ 17%), root length (~ 47%), plant fresh weight (~ 28%), plant dry weight (~ 96%), chlorophyll a (~ 43%), chlorophyll b (~ 31%), and total chlorophyll (~ 37%). It was also noted that 0.75% AB was more pronounced in decreasing antioxidant activities than 25 µM strigolactone under 20 mg Cd/ kg soil toxicity. However, performing 25 µM strigolacton …

Rapid Isolation and Determination of Flavones in Biological Samples Using Zinc Complexation Coupled with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography.

Chlorophyll-type contaminants are commonly encountered in the isolation and determination of flavones of plant aerial plant parts. Heme is also a difficult background substance in whole blood analysis. Both chlorophyll and heme are porphyrin type compounds. In this study, a rapid method for isolating flavones with 5-hydroxyl or ortho-hydroxyl groups from biological samples was developed based on the different solubilities of porphyrin-metal and flavone-metal complexes. It is important that other background substances, e.g., proteins and lipids, are also removed from flavones without an additio…

Effects of preharvest 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) spraying on delaying peel-color change and expression of carotenogenic genes in CO2-deastringed persimmons.

To investigate the changes in persimmon peel color induced by CO2 deastringency and preharvest 1-MCP spraying, we conducted a study with three experimental treatments: control, CO2 deastringency (CO2 group), and preharvest 1-MCP spray followed by CO2 deastringency (1-MCP/CO2 group). Relative to the control, the CO2 group exhibited considerably higher fruit respiration rate, ethylene production, peel-color index, and total carotenoid content, accompanied by a marked decrease in chlorophyll content. The 1-MCP/CO2 group maintained higher chlorophyll content, while all other indicators remained lo

Effects of Ensifer meliloti and Rhizophagus intraradices on alfalfa growth indices under cadmium sulfide nanoparticle stress.

Cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS-NPs) are increasingly applied across various industries because of their unique properties. However, their accumulation in soil ecosystems and subsequent uptake by terrestrial plants can negatively affect plant growth. Beneficial microorganisms in the rhizosphere play an important role in mitigating the toxic effects of nanoparticles, thereby supporting plant health. Nevertheless, the role of these microorganisms in alleviating CdS-NP-induced stress in alfalfa remains largely unexplored. This study investigated the effects of different CdS-NPs concentrations

Differential responses of sorghum genotypes to sugarcane aphid feeding.

The findings of this study suggest that known resistant sorghum genotypes compensate for feeding pressure of sugarcane aphid by maintaining/increasing photosynthetic capacity and/or have higher chlorophyll content than susceptible genotypes. Knowledge of the physiological response of sorghum, (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), to sugarcane aphid (SCA), Melanaphis sacchari (Zehnter) feeding will provide baseline information on defense responses and resistance mechanisms. This study documented the impact of SCA feeding on seven sorghum genotypes by measuring chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate,

The utility of biochemical, physiological and morphological biomarkers of leaf sulfate levels in establishing Brachylaena discolor leaves as a bioindicator of SO2 pollution.

The negative impacts of air pollution have made monitoring of air quality increasingly important, especially in heavily industrialized areas such as the South Durban Basin (SDB), in South Africa. Bioindicators such as trees can complement conventional air quality monitoring and be used to prioritise vulnerable areas. This study assessed the utility of Brachylaena discolor DC. tree leaves as a bioindicator of sulfur dioxide pollution. This involved correlating ground level sulfur dioxide concentrations ([SO2]) with B. discolor leaf sulfate concentrations ([sulfate]) at three industrial (treatme

A NAC transcriptional factor BrNAC029 is involved in cytokinin-delayed leaf senescence in postharvest Chinese flowering cabbage.

Both cytokinin and NAC transcription factors were reported to involve in leaf senescence. However, the mechanism of NAC transcription factors how to regulate cytokinin-delayed leaf senescence is still unknown. In this study, application of N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N'-phenylurea (CPPU), a cytokinin analogue, significantly delayed leaf senescence and maintained cytokinin content of Chinese flowering cabbage during storage. Meanwhile, the expression of an NAC transcriptional activator (BrNAC029) was increased but suppressed by CPPU treatment. Furthermore, BrNAC029 activated the expressions of chlor

Differential bioaccumulation of mercury by zooplankton taxa in a mercury-contaminated reservoir Guizhou China.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in aquatic systems remains a global concern with the biomagnification of methylmercury (MeHg) through primary consumers (zooplankton) to fish and humans. In this study, total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations were analyzed in zooplankton collected from Baihua reservoir (Guizhou Province, China). Our results demonstrated that THg and MeHg concentrations were strongly correlated to zooplankton community and biomass composition. The THg concentration was significantly higher in micro-zooplankton compared to meso-zooplankton and macro-zooplankton, and MeHg concentrat

Expression of the Arabidopsis Mg-chelatase H subunit alleviates iron deficiency-induced stress in transgenic rice.

The most common symptom of iron (Fe) deficiency in plants is leaf chlorosis caused by impairment of chlorophyll biosynthesis. Magnesium (Mg)-chelatase H subunit (CHLH) is a key component in both chlorophyll biosynthesis and plastid signaling, but its role in Fe deficiency is poorly understood. Heterologous expression of the Arabidopsis thaliana Mg-chelatase H subunit gene (AtCHLH) increased Mg-chelatase activity by up to 6-fold and abundance of its product, Mg-protoporphyrin IX (Mg-Proto IX), by 60-75% in transgenic rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings compared to wild-type (WT) controls. Noticeably,

Fulvic acid and hydrogen sulfide synergistically mitigate chromium stress in tobacco seedlings by regulating oxidative stress indicators and antioxidant defense mechanisms.

Chromium (Cr) toxicity poses a significant threat to crop growth and agricultural productivity. Fulvic acid (FA) and hydrogen sulfide (HS) have emerged as promising agents for mitigating metal-induced toxicity; however, their combined effects on physiological and biochemical responses under Cr stress remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the synergistic effects of FA and HS on Cr accumulation, seedling growth, physio-biochemical attributes, leaf ultrastructure, and the expression of photosynthesis-related genes in tobacco seedlings subjected to Cr stress. Cr stress significantly i

Combined effect of water inundation and heavy metals on the photosynthesis and physiology of Spartina alterniflora.

The frequency and duration of tidal flooding significantly influence the bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) in sediment and hence exert toxicological effects on coastal wetland plants. In this study, the combined effects of different water inundation times (3, 6, 9, and 12 h) and HMs (Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cr) on the photosynthesis and physiology of Spartina alterniflora were investigated under greenhouse conditions. Results showed that S. alterniflora was somehow tolerant to the combined HMs treatments, and only the highest level of HM treatment decreased leaf chlorophyll content. Furthermore, t

Biogenic Amines as Biomarkers for the Assessment of Diesel-Contaminated Water Toxicity.

This study evaluated the phytotoxicity of diesel oil (DO) using the green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the aquatic plant Lemna minor. Toxic effects were assessed in 7-day Algaltoxkit and Lemna bioassays by measuring growth, chlorophyll fluorescence, and biogenic amine (BA) content. L. minor was less sensitive to DO in terms of growth than the alga. Toxicity thresholds (LOEC, 7 days) showed that DO concentrations above 0.11-0.12% significantly inhibited the growth and productivity of both model organisms. Chlorophyll fluorescence proved to be an early and sensitive indicator of DO t
