Enchondroma protuberans has been defined as an exophytic enchondroma of a long bone. We contrast a case of enchondroma protuberans with two cases of coincident enchondroma and osteochondroma. Our cases and the previously published ones lead us to believe that enchondroma protuberans is probably an enchondroma variant and that its unusual growth pattern may be related to the oblique orientation of the proximal humeral epiphysis. Unlike osteochondroma, which may be treated surgically by removing the cartilage cap and, in some cases, the stalk, enchondroma protuberans requires intralesional curet…

Synovial osteochondromatosis may occur within an otherwise normal synovial joint (primary disease), within a diseased joint (secondary disease), within tendon sheaths, and within extraarticular bursal cavities. Each of these four types of disease can present in one of three progressive morphologic stages in which the intrasynovial proliferations of cartilage and bone break free to form loose bodies. A 61-year-old man presented with loose bodies about his right shoulder. This case report demonstrates that the disease was a true example of bursal osteochondromatosis of the subacromial bursa, Sta…

We reviewed 53 cases of synovial chondromatosis and compared their clinical, radiological and pathological features. A radiological diagnosis is possible with increasing frequency as the disease progresses; in the early phase arthrography is helpful. Radiologically the disease may be classified as either extra-articular, or intra-articular; the intra-articular variety may be localised or generalised. Recurrence after operation was seen in 11.5% and was much the same after either synovectomy or simple removal of loose bodies. A protocol for treatment is proposed.

Two cases of synovial osteochondromatosis of the first toe are reported. A third case of a loose body associated with joint destruction is presented for comparison.

Tracheobronchial neoplasms are much less common than lung parenchymal neoplasms but can be associated with significant morbidity and mortali … ial lymphoma, and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. Benign neoplasms discussed include hamartoma, chondroma, lipoma, papilloma, amyloidoma, leiomyoma, neurogenic lesions, and benign salivary gland tumors (pleomorphic adenoma and mucous gland adenoma). Familiarity with the range of potential entities and any distinguishing features should prove valuable to …

BACKGROUND: An extensive differential diagnosis exists for swelling of the fingers. One of the rare causes of such a swelling is a multisystem disorder called sarcoidosis.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 40-year-old female patient who was first seen at our outpatient clinic with a painless swelling of the middle phalanx of her right middle finger. The diagnosis initially made was enchondroma, which was treated conservatively. Thirteen years later, the patient returned with pain and progressive swelling of this same finger. Physical examination and imaging revealed a giant-cell tumour of the t…

The authors review 30 cases of subungual exostosis, 27 in the foot and 3 in the hand. In approximately 80% of the cases, errors in initial diagnosis had been made, and the affection had been confused with ordinary verrucae, mycoses or pyogenic disease. Histological examination showed that in some cases the neoformation ossified by an enchondral mechanism similar to that of osteocartilaginous exostosis, while more often the mechanism was of the intramembranous or mixed type. The treatment consisted of resection of the exostosis at its base after removing the nail. Complete healing occurred in a

Maffucci's syndrome is a particularly rare clinical form of dyschondroplasia. It combines angiomatosis, chondromatosis and sometimes dyschromic cutaneous lesions (Kast). It evolves into a neoplastic context in 20 to 50 p. cent of the cases, dominated by the risk of sarcomatous degeneration. The lesions are preferably located on the hands and the feet.

Two patients presented with hypophosphataemic osteomalacia and were subsequently found to have small tumours unusual histopathology and location causing the osteomalacia. Each tumour was found after an intensive search for occult masses. Studies of vitamin D metabolism and renal tubular function before and after surgery yielded further insight into the pathophysiology of oncogenic osteomalacia. These cases demonstrate that microscopic quantities of tumour are capable of causing the syndrome and further illustrate the high index of suspicion often necessary to locate causative tumours in patien

A series of clinical cases very rarely observed in rheumatology is presented. These cases consist of osteoid-osteoma, osteogenesis imperfecta, pachydermo-periostosis, multiple chondromatosis, osteopecilia, Camurati-Engelmann disease. The caracteristics of the patients examined are appropriate and well adapted to the typical clinical studies of these diseases, and are considered current with the contributions concerning rheumatology appeared in the most recent literature.

Four cases of uncommon tumours of the petrous bone treated by surgery alone or combined with radiotherapy are reported. There was one case embryonic sarcoma in a 3-year-old female child and one case each of chondroid chordoma, isolated plasmocytoma and malignant fibroid chondrosarcoma or histiocytoma with giant cells. The signal symptoms (pseudo-petrositis, isolated paralysis of a vocal cord, sudden deafness) may be misleading. The most helpful diagnostic methods are frontal tomography and CT scanning.

Moreover, reduced bone thickness and trabecular bone mass, skull deformities, or chondroma-like lesions were revealed. All these pathologies might be attributed to ciliopathies. Elongation of the ciliary axonemes in embryonic and postnatal growth plate chondrocytes was observed in Sprouty2-/- and Sprouty2+/- /Sprouty4-/- mutants compared …

OBJECTIVES: To report the pathologic findings in cases involving endotracheal and endobronchial tumors in the pediatric population and to de … to intermediate malignant potential lesions: histoplasmosis nodules, chondroid hamartoma, pulmonary chondroma, and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. In 12 cases, definitive treatment included surgical resection. Three of these cases required postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this series suggest that in the pediatric …

UNLABELLED: Ollier disease is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the development of multiple enchondromas. The clinical manifestations of the disease vary widely, but patients often present with bone deformities and an increased risk of developing chondrosarcoma. Here, the authors present a case report of a 25-year-old male patient with a devastating and historic evolution of Ollier disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: At the age of 10, the patient developed a sub-centimeter mass in the first phalanx of the left middle finger, which subsequently grew in size. A biopsy was performed at the age of…
