Weber-Christian disease producing splenic vein occlusion and bleeding gastric varices: successful treatment with sclerotherapy.

A 48 year old woman with intra-abdominal Weber-Christian disease presented with bleeding gastric varices and evidence of splenic vein occlusion. We describe the problems encountered in making this diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

Genetic study of a family with two members with Weber Christian disease (panniculitis) and alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency.

Alpha 1 antitrypsin phenotypes and serum levels are presented for a family in which two brothers have Weber Christian disease and alpha 1 antitrypsin (PI) Z phenotypes. Clinical histories are described for these two men. A younger brother has the PI Z phenotype but does not have the disease, indicating that additional genetic and/or environmental factors contribute to the pathogenesis of Weber Christian disease. However, the two cases described provide additional evidence for a relationship between alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency and the development of symptoms.

Sickle cell disease awareness and perception among Christian religious leaders in Accra Metropolis: a qualitative study.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a severe hemoglobin gene mutation disorder inherited from both parents. 2% of Ghanaian newborns are affected by SCD; one in three Ghanaians has the hemoglobin S gene. Christian religious leaders may play a role in the prevention of SCD through the promotion of genetic counseling, genotype screening for premarital couples, and offering counseling to couples on prenatal screening and diagnosis for SCD. However, little is known about the awareness and perception of SCD among Christian religious leaders in Ghana, and this study aims to explore these. This study adopted

Correlates of Christian Religious Identification and De-identification among Sexual and Gender Minorities: A U.S. Probability Sample.

Using a U.S. nationally representative sample of 1,529 sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), we examined the demographic and developmental correlates of Christian religious de-identification. We found that SGMs who were older, Black, cisgender men, and/or lived in the American South were more likely to identify as Christian in adulthood, relative to other SGMs. Those who were never Christian reported being more out to family and friends at earlier ages than those who were raised Christian. SGMs who were raised Christian, but did not identify as Christian in adulthood reported, more adverse chil

Identification of Taenia sp. in a mummy from a Christian Necropolis in El-Deir, Oasis of Kharga, ancient Egypt.

For the first time, a palaeoparasitological study was performed on 12 mummies from a Christian cemetery excavated in El-Deir, Oasis of Kharga, Egypt. The analysis revealed the presence of a tapeworm, probably Taenia sp., in a single individual. The presence of just the presumed taeniid egg is surprising and raises the question of the relationship between residents of Egyptian oases and those residing in the Nile Valley. The result suggests information on the health status of the ancient oasis population and re-enforces a hypothesis regarding possible social stratification of the inhabitants. T

Orbital lobular panniculitis in Weber-Christian disease: sustained response to anti-TNF treatment and review of the literature.

Weber-Christian disease is a febrile, relapsing, non-suppurative panniculitis of unknown etiology. Lobular panniculitis is the essential feature in biopsy specimens and evolves through three recognizable stages. We report a case of Weber-Christian disease with bilateral orbital involvement, at different stages, affecting the orbital fat along with enophthalmos in one orbit, and the upper preaponeurotic fat pad in the other. Weber-Christian disease was refractory to treatment with conventional immunosuppressive regimens; however, early inflammatory-but not chronic fibrotic-orbital lesions respo

Alcoholic hyalins (Mallory bodies) in a case of Weber-Christian disease: electron microscopic observations of liver involvement.

A 32-yr-old female who suffered from typical Weber-Christian disease developed hepatosplenomegaly and hepatic dysfunction. A liver biopsy specimen displayed many fat droplets and alcoholic hyalins (Mallory bodies). Electron microscopic hepatic injury was indicated by many fat droplets, alcoholic hyalins, marked deformities of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, and by some deformed nuclei and nuclear bodies. There has been no other report describing alcoholic hyalins in the hepatic changes of Weber-Christian disease. Additionally, based on electron microscopic observation, we assume that fatty ch

Palliative biliodigestive bypass for unresectable pancreatic malignancy at Kilimanjaro Christian medical centre: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is a common and deadly cancer, ranking as the 14th most common cancer worldwide and the 7th leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Advanced pancreatic malignancy frequently presents with biliary and gastric outlet obstruction and palliative open interventions are often required, especially in low-income countries where endoscopic surgical bypass methods are often unavailable. This study aimed to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients undergoing biliodigestive bypass for pancreatic malignancy. METHODS: This was a hospital-based retrospe

Christian Orthodox fasting in practice: A comparative evaluation between Greek Orthodox general population fasters and Athonian monks.

OBJECTIVES: Christian Orthodox fasting (COF), a periodical vegetarian subset of the Mediterranean diet, has been proven to exert beneficial effects on human health. Athonian fasting is a pescetarian COF variation, where red meat is strictly restricted throughout the year. Previous studies have examined the COF nutritional synthesis and health effects in general population fasters (GF) and Athonian monks (AM), separately. The aim of this study is to comparatively evaluate the characteristics and effects of this nutritional advocacy between the two populations. METHODS: The study included 43 ma
