Adrenal incidentalomas are increasingly encountered in clinical practice. When functional, they are typically associated with the secretion … lls resulting from an embryological migration defect. Additionally, a paracrine interaction between chromaffin cells and ACTH-expressing cells, potentially mediated by co-peptides, may contribute to this unique hormonal behavior. This case adds to the exceptionally rare reports of dual hormonal activity in adrenal tumors and offers new insights into the pathophysi …

O(2) sensing is of critical importance for cell survival and adaptation of living organisms to changing environments or physiological conditions. O(2)-sensitive ion channels are major effectors of the cellular responses to hypoxia. These channels are preferentially found in excitable neurosecretory cells (glomus cells of the carotid body, cells in the neuroepithelial bodies of the lung, and neonatal adrenal chromaffin cells), which mediate fast cardiorespiratory adjustments to hypoxia. O(2)-sensitive channels are also expressed in the pulmonary and systemic arterial smooth muscle cells where t…

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a tumor of the sympathoadrenal system arising in children under 15 years of age. In Germany, NB accounts for 7% of childhood cancer cases, but 11% of cancer deaths. It originates from highly migratory progenitor cells that leave the dorsal neural tube and contribute neurons and glial cells to sympathetic ganglia, and chromaffin and supportive cells to the adrenal medulla and paraganglia. Clinically, histologically and molecularly, NBs present as extremely heterogeneous, ranging from very good to very poor prognosis. The etiology of NB still remains unclear and needs to be

BACKGROUND: Urinary bladder paraganglioma is a rare neoplasm that originates from embryonic rests of chromaffin cells in the sympathetic plexus of the detrusor muscle, and which occasionally can be observed in transurethral resection specimens. Artifactual changes due to the procedure may frequently simulate an advanced urothelial carcinoma.
CASE: A 65-year-old woman presented with episodic macroscopic hematuria. No symptoms of hyperadrenergic stimulation were referred. Cystoscopic examination revealed a protruding mass on the left side of the bladder. Transurethral resection (TUR) was perfor…

Opioids exert a proapoptotic effect on several normal and tumoral cells. The aim of the present article was to examine the effect of opioids on the PC12 rat pheochromocytoma cell line, a model for the study of chromaffin cell apoptosis. These cells produce delta- and kappa-opioid agonists and their receptors. Our results were as follows: The kappa- and delta2-opioid receptor agonists had a rapid but transient effect on apoptosis at 3 h, whereas mu opioids did not. The effect of opioids was reversible by the opioid antagonists naloxone and nor-binaltorphimine. The effect of opioids was protecti

The clinical, histopathologic and fine structural features of multiple unusual tumours detected in a 20-year-old patient with von Recklinghausen's disease, who died within a year of onset of symptoms of a rapidly expanding intracranial tumour, are described. The tumour was found to involve the falx cerebri, the basal leptomeninges and dura mater, both olfactory and optic nerves, both frontal lobes, the right temporal lobe and middle cerebral peduncle, both middle cerebellar peduncles, and with a metastasis in a cervical node. On light and electron microscopy this tumour appeared to be a fibrob

The tissue and cellular distribution of a GTP-binding protein, Go, was investigated in the rat by immunochemical and immunohistochemical met … nes of neuroendocrine cells, including glandular cells in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, chromaffin cells in the medulla of the adrenal gland, islets cells in the pancreas, and parafollicular cells in the thyroid. These results indicate that Go is localized exclusively in the nervous tissues and neuroendocrine cells.

Metastatic pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (MPP) is a rare endocrine tumor that originates from extra-adrenal chromaffin cells such as the paraganglia cells of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. It usually causes multiple solid tumors and exhibits strong aggressiveness with poor prognosis, with a reported 5-year survival rate of less than 50%. Cases of brain and retroperitoneal metastases at the initial diagnosis have not yet been reported. We report a 41-year-old male patient initially diagnosed with MPP in the brain and retroperitoneum who underwent multi-disciplinary collaborative surge…

A paraganglioma is a rare tumor, composed of chromaffin cells, groups of cells associated to the autonomous system. When the tumor occurs in the adrenal gland, it is called pheochromocitoma. The malignant paraganglioma is a very rare presentation; it is diagnosed by local recurrence after total resection of the primary mass, or findings of distant metastases. We present a case report of a 29-year-old woman with cervico-brachial pain. In 1995 she underwent a carotid body tumor resection. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), plain X-rays and computerized tomography scan revealed multiple lesions in…

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors arising from chromaffin cells and are capable of producing catecholamines. The diagnostics rely on measurements of free plasma and urinary fractionated metanephrines, complemented by computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for anatomical imaging. Up to 35% of PPGLs are hereditary and the underlying genetic background significantly influences both tumor biology and surgical strategy. Surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment. For adrenal tumors, laparoscopic or retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy r…

BACKGROUND: Pheochromocytomas originate from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla, resulting in excessive production of catecholamines and bizarre clinical symptoms. An extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma is called a paraganglioma. Urinary bladder paraganglioma represents an uncommon tumor that accounts for <0.05% of all bladder tumors.
CASE PRESENTATION: Presented here are three cases of incidental urinary bladder paraganglioma, all having hematuria as the primary symptom. During transurethral resection of bladder tumor, blood pressure fluctuated intensely with profuse bleeding, leading to the…

A pheochromocytoma is a tumor that typically originates within the chromaffin cells of the adrenal glands, resulting in excessive production of catecholamines. Cystic forms are exceptional and pose a diagnostic challenge, especially those that are non-secreting. The most prevalent symptom associated with this condition is arterial hypertension, which can be either persistent or, more commonly, intermittent. The Ménard triad, comprising headaches, excessive sweating, and palpitations, may accompany episodes of hypertension. The presence of elevated levels of methoxylated derivatives serves to c…

Compound pheochromocytoma refers to a rare adrenal tumor that includes neuroblastic components and is a rare catecholamine-producing tumor from chromaffin cells, typically found in the adrenal medulla. It usually presents with symptoms like tachycardia, headache, and intermittent diaphoresis, although its clinical manifestations can vary. Diagnosis involves biochemical studies and imaging such as catecholamines, metanephrines, CT scans, and positron emission tomography (PET). The surgical management is the definitive, being the laparoscopic approach of choice in most cases. This case report di…

Pheochromocytomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors that originate in chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla and excessively secrete catecholamines, which leads to a multitude of different symptoms. The most common symptoms include headaches, palpitations, and sweating. Because of a diverse clinical presentation, pheochromocytomas pose a major diagnostic challenge and often go unidentified. These tumors can occur sporadically or as a part of hereditary syndromes. The diagnosis is confirmed by measuring plasma and 24-hour urinary metanephrine and normetanephrine. Computed tomography, magnetic res…

Paragangliomas of the jugular foramen are rare. They may present with symptoms of compression of the glossopharyngeal or vagus nerves, or due to secretion of catecholamines from chromaffin cells within the tumour. This case describes a rare presentation of glomus tumour. A 67-year-old patient presented with a 2-month history of right-sided tongue swelling. She was found to have an obvious swelling on the right side of the tongue but no obvious weakness or fasciculation on initial examination. Ultrasound confirmed diffuse muscle swelling, but no lesion within the tongue. Magnetic resonance imag…

Paraganglioma are uncommon neuroendocrine tumours arising from extra-adrenal chromaffin cells of the autonomic nervous system. In the head and neck region, these neoplasms most commonly arise from the carotid body, the vagus nerve, and the jugulotympanic area. We present the case of a 69-year-old woman who suffered from dyspnoea and dysphonia for six months. A biopsy diagnosed a laryngeal haemangioma and a resection of the tumour was performed using supraglottic pharyngolaryngectomy. Definitive histopathological examination revealed a laryngeal paraganglioma. Laryngeal paraganglioma and haeman…

Pheochromocytoma is a tumor of the chromaffin cells which secretes catecholamines and 90% of it originates from adrenal medulla. The main symptoms and signs are hypertension, tachycardia, sweating and headache. Rarely, acute abdomen may occur as a result of the rupture of tumoral mass or bleeding inside the mass. Here we present a 43 year old male patient who applied with acute abdominal syndrome and severe hypertension. Abdominal MRI showed a large mass hemorrhagic in nature above the right kidney. At laparotomy, ruptured adrenal mass was seen and excised successfully. The histological evalua…

Pheochromocytomas are rare, mostly benign catecholamine-producing tumors arising from the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla or in the paraganglia. Clinical presentation is highly variable but typically with hypertension, severe headaches, palpitations and sweating. Biochemical testing by 24 h urinary fractioned metanephrines or catecholamines and plasma free metanephrines as the most sensitive screening approach, confirms the catecholamine excess. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging of the adrenal glands and abdomen as well as functional imaging with (123)Iod-MIBG sci…

It is well established that ethanol withdrawal is associated with hyperexcitability of central neurons, and that the increased responsiveness demonstrated to excitatory amino acids (EAAs) may contribute to the physical signs of ethanol withdrawal and to neurodegeneration. Although the mechanisms of neuronal hyperexcitation are not fully understood, there is considerable evidence to suggest an increase in both NMDA receptors and voltage operated calcium channels (VOCCs) may play an important role. Cultures of bovine adrenal chromaffin cells (BACCs) and fetal rat neocortical neurons chronically …

The adrenal gland consists of the medulla and the cortex. The chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla release catecholamines via regulated exocytosis. Vesicle formation, trafficking, maturation and fusion with the plasma membrane are orchestrated by lipids such as cholesterol, diacylglycerol, phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate. On the other hand, the adrenal cortex is a highly specialized lipid-metabolizing organ secreting steroid hormones. Cholesterol, acquired from circulating lipoproteins and de novo biosynthesis, is mobilized from intracellular stores and transport…
