Wolbachia are intracellular bacteria that infect arthropods and filarial nematodes. These bacteria play an important role in the immunology and pathogenesis of filarial diseases through their proteins and, possibly, other molecules. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in normal pregnancy and hydatidiform mole did not bind to the peanut agglutinin (PNA)-Sepharose column, whereas significant amount of hCG in choriocarcinoma adsorbed to the column. Glycosylated hemoglobin (glyco Hb) was determined by affinity chromatography and Hb S1 and Hb F by Bio-Rex 70 chromatography in patients with sickle cell anemia, SC disease, S beta+-thalassemia, and S beta 0-thalassemia. Authors could purify two isoenzymes (designated CA1 and CA2) from the submandibular gland but only one (CA1) from the submandibular saliva by gel filtration and affinity chromatography. The culture of human submandibular gland (HSG) cells on laminin-1 induces acinar differentiation. We identified a site on laminin involved in acinar differentiation using synthetic peptides derived from the C-terminal G-domain of the laminin alpha1 and alpha2 chains. We report the identification of a novel, high oxygen affinity hemoglobin (Hb) variant [α127(H10)Lys→Gln; HBA1: c.382A>C]. The variant was detected in an adolescent male (proband) of Syrian descent by cation exchange high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), during Hb A1c analysis. A complete blood count (CBC) showed elevated red blood cells (RBCs) (6.08 × 1012/L), Hb (16.1 g/dL) and packed cell volume (PCV) (0.48 L/L).
