The influence of humic acid (HA) on the toxicity and bioavailability of two forms of trivalent chromium (chromic chloride and chrome lignosulfonate) was evaluated using a common freshwater invertebrate, Daphnia pulex. With both compounds, the 50 mg/liter HA significantly decreased toxicity at all time points examined. Bacteria capable of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) reduction can be found in Cr6+-containing sewage and sediments of purification tanks of industrial plants. They cannot be detected in water and soil samples containing no chromium compounds. Bacteria reducing chromium belong to the genera Aeromonas, Escherichia, Pseudomonas and Enterobacter. Their activity of Cr6+ reduction correlates with the high resistance to the elevated content of this ion in the medium. The fine cell structure of these bacteria is described.

Oral administration of nickel-chromium to guinea pigs by way of a fixed occlusal splint, or the incorporation of metallic powder or salts into the pelleted food, did not induce hypersensitivity to these metals. In addition, a subsequent attempt to immunize the pre-treated guinea pigs failed in most animals, whereas non-pre-treated guinea pigs became clearly hypersensitive. These results show that oral administration of nickel and chromium induced a state of (partial) tolerance to both metals.

To test the hypothesis that chromium deficiency may be cumulative with age and increasing parity, hair chromium levels were measured in 432 women at delivery. Although the levels in general were lower than those found in nonpregnant women there was no correlation between hair chromium level and age or number of pregnancies. Hair zinc levels were also measured to rule out zinc deficiency as a factor.

A suicide resulting from the ingestion of copper, chromium and arsenic is reported. Death was delayed for 36 hours, during which time copper was rapidly eliminated from the body but chromium and arsenic remained in substantial quantities.
