Spatial prediction of risk areas for vector transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi in the State of Paraná, southern Brazil.

After obtaining certification of the absence of transmission of the Trypanosoma cruzi by Triatoma infestans in 2006, other native species of protozoan vectors have been found in human dwellings within municipalities of the State of Paraná, Southern Brazil. However, the spatial distribution of T. cruzi vectors and how climatic and landscape combined variables explain the distribution are still poorly understood. The goal of this study was to predict the potential distribution of T. cruzi vectors as a proxy for Chagas disease transmission risk using Ecological Niche Models (ENMs) based on climat

A machine learning-coupled APSIM model pipeline for projected oil palm yield in Surat Thani, Thailand.

Accurate and timely forecasts of oil palm yield are essential for both short-term farm management and long-term adaptation planning, yet their reliability is often constrained by the coarse spatial resolution of climate datasets and structural biases in process-based crop models. To address these challenges, we developed an end-to-end modeling framework that integrates spatially refined climate information with a hybrid process-machine-learning approach. Our method employs Spatial Interactions Downscaling to convert reanalysis, seasonal forecasts, and CMIP6 climate projections into fine-scale

Persistence Vulnerability of the African Savanna Elephant Loxodonta africana to Anthropocene Threats in East Africa.

Anthropogenic climate change caused by human activities reduces suitable habitats for species. This effect is especially pronounced for tropical species, where agricultural expansion and habitat degradation interact with climate-driven stressors. Spatial conservation prioritization for vulnerable species requires species distribution modeling to evaluate effects of climate change and human pressures. We mapped the current and future extent of suitable habitat for the African Savanna Elephant, L. africana, in East Africa using an ensemble species distribution model. We built an ensemble model w

Modeling of leptospirosis outbreaks in relation to hydroclimatic variables in the northeast of Argentina.

The transmission of leptospirosis is conditioned by climatic variables. In northeastern Argentina leptospirosis outbreaks occur mainly in coincidence with periods of abundant precipitation and high hydrometric level. A Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered Epidemiological Model (SIR) is proposed, which incorporates hydroclimatic variables for the three most populated cities in the area (Santa Fe, Paraná and Rosario), during the 2009-2018 period. Results obtained by solving the proposed SIR model for the 2010 outbreak are in good agreement with the actual data, capturing the dynamics of the leptospi

Current and Future Distributions of Allium karataviense and A. turkestanicum in Central Asia Using MaxEnt Modeling.

The genus Allium L. represents one of the most diverse groups of monocotyledonous plants in Central Asia, a region recognized as a major center of its diversity. However, ongoing climate change poses a serious threat to the distribution and persistence of many wild species, including Allium. In this study, we applied Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) modeling to assess the current and future potential distributions of Allium karataviense Regel and A. turkestanicum Regel under three climate change scenarios (ssp126, ssp245, ssp585) and three time periods (2030s, 2070s, and 2090s). The models demonstrate

Estimating the Incidence and Economic Cost of Lyme Disease Cases in Canada in the 21st Century with Projected Climate Change.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is emerging in Canada owing to the range expansion of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis (I. scapularis). OBJE … due to the maximum incidence at endemicity selected, with minor contributions from variations among climate models and RCPs. Projected annual costs were substantial, ranging from CA$0.5 billion to $2.0 billion a year by 2050. There was little difference in projected incidence and economic cost between RCPs, and from 2050 to 2100, because projected climate up to …

Prevalence, economic assessment, and risk factors of gastrointestinal nematodes infecting herds in tropical, dry and temperate climate regions in Mexico.

This study investigated exposure to gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes on dairy cattle farms by antibody level determination in bulk tank milk (BTM) samples and its influence on production to detect the risk factors for infection in different climate regions in three states of Mexico. From January to April 2017, BTM samples were collected from 1058 dairy cattle herds and used to establish three Köppen climate classes (tropical, dry and temperate) and states of Mexico. A questionnaire on farm management was applied. The overall herd prevalence of parasites was 67.20%. The highest percentage of pos

Interactions between climate factors and air pollution on daily HFMD cases: A time series study in Guangdong, China.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have shown that climate factors and air pollution are associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) epidemics. However, the interaction between air pollution and climate factors remains unknown. METHODS: Daily HFMD counts from 2009 through 2012 in Guangdong were collected. We used distributed lag non-linear models to assess the associations of climate factors and air pollution on HFMD cases. The effects of climate factors were stratified by air pollution stratum to examine the interaction effect of air quality index (AQI) and temperature, as well as relative h

Climate change influences on the potential geographic distribution of the disease vector tick Ixodes ricinus.

BACKGROUND: Ixodes ricinus is a species of hard tick that transmits several important diseases in Europe and North Africa, including Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis. Climate change is affecting the geographic distributions and abundances of arthropod vectors, which in turn influence the geographic distribution and epidemiology of associated vector-borne diseases. To date, few studies have investigated effects of climate change on the spatial distribution of I. ricinus at continental extents. Here, we assessed the potential distribution of I. ricinus under current and future climat

Modelling Anopheles gambiae s.s. Population Dynamics with Temperature- and Age-Dependent Survival.

Climate change and global warming are emerging as important threats to human health, particularly through the potential increase in vector- and water-borne diseases. Environmental variables are known to affect substantially the population dynamics and abundance of the poikilothermic vectors of disease, but the exact extent of this sensitivity is not well established. Focusing on malaria and its main vector in Africa, Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto, we present a set of novel mathematical models of climate-driven mosquito population dynamics motivated by experimental data suggesting that in An.

Climate extremes and the dynamic reshaping of snail habitat: implications for the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of schistosomal vulnerability in Brazil.

Extreme climate variables are increasingly important for understanding the distribution of Biomphalaria snails, the intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. While many studies focus on long-term averages, our approach emphasizes the role of climatic extreme events and their seasonal timing in shaping habitat persistence. We applied spatially explicit Random Forest (RF) species distribution models with spatial cross-validation and bootstrap aggregation to produce robust and transferable predictions of snail habitat suitability, and then ranked the influence of extreme climate variables using

Health systems and climate change mitigation through an applied health informatics and sustainability perspective.

Climate change poses a growing threat to U.S. healthcare systems, which are uniquely positioned to mitigate its impacts while addressing their own greenhouse gas emissions from energy use, supply chains, clinical operations, and waste. Clinical informaticists can advance mitigation by integrating environmental data into health system operations and decision-making. Tracking emissions across scopes enables data-informed strategies, while frameworks such as I-CLIMATE and One Digital Health can help coordinate disparate data streams and reduce healthcare's environmental impact. Integrated dashboa

Phenotypic variation in populations of the mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, and implications for predicting the effects of temperature and climate change on dengue transmission.

There is concern that increases in temperature due to climate change could lead to shifts in the transmission dynamics and distribution of mosquito vectors. Many current models assume there are 'average' thermal performance curves for a given vector species' life-history traits. However, this 'one-size-fits-all' assumption ignores the potential for standing phenotypic variation in life-history traits to create population-specific differences in thermal performance. In this study, we explored thermal performance of five independent field populations of Ae. aegypti from Mexico, together with a s

Integrating microclimate to understand vector development and disease patterns: challenges and lessons from plague in Madagascar's Central Highlands.

Plague, the zoonotic vector-borne disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, shows seasonal infection patterns across the Central Highlands of Madagascar. The disease persists within a complex ecological network involving host and vector species, all influenced by climate. Due to this complexity, links between climate, Y. pestis ecology and human infection remain incomplete. This study developed microclimate-based models to assess climatic impacts on growth cycles of plague vectors Xenopsylla cheopis and Synopsyllus fonquerniei. Using microclimatic modelling, the vector development index
