[The neural bases of social cognition in major depressive disorder: a review].

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with a significant impairment of social and interpersonal functioning. Several neuroimaging studies have evaluated social cognition, i.e. how people with MDD process, store and analyze information about other people and social situations. METHODS: We conducted a focused review and selected manuscript published until August 2016 indexed on PubMed and PsycINFO, searching for the following keywords: "major depressive disorder", "major depression", "unipolar depression", "clinical depression", "fMRI", "emotion comprehension", "emotion pe

Cognitive Training through mHealth for Individuals with Substance Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Heroin addiction has a negative impact on cognitive functions, and even recovering addicts suffer from cognitive impairment. Recent approaches to cognitive intervention have been taking advantage of what new technologies have to offer. OBJECTIVES: We report a study testing the efficacy of a serious games approach using tablets to stimulate and rehabilitate cognitive functions in recovering addicts. METHODS: A small-scale cognitive training program with serious games was run with a sample of 14 male heroin addicts undergoing a rehabilitation program. RESULTS: We found consistent

Hypersomnia and cognitive impairment in a patient with bipolar disorder - a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common clinical problem that can have serious health consequences and complicate the course of mental disorders. It is estimated that the prevalence of sleep apnea in patients with bipolar disorder can be 21-47.5%. Some symptoms of OSA are the same as the symptoms of depression: daytime drowsiness, cognitive dysfunction, decreased drive, apathy, depressed mood, anhedonia. METHODS: We present a case of a patient whose depressive symptoms persisted despite repeated changes of pharmacological treatment and were exacerbated by severe sleep disorder.

Estimation of cognitive and affective disorders occurrence in patients with Lyme borreliosis.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. The most common symptoms are related to the skin, musculo-scelatal system, central and peripheral nervous system, rarely to the heart muscle and the eye, and may occur in the multistage course of the disease. LB may additionally be accompanied by psychopathological symptoms. The aim of the study is estimation of the cognitive and affective disorders occurence in patients with LB. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried out in the group of 121 patients (61 females, 60 males) aged 18-

Guidelines for Evaluation and Management of Cognitive Disorders in HIV-Positive Individuals.

Antiretroviral therapy has revolutionised the treatment for people living with HIV (PLWH). Where antiretroviral coverage is high, the treatment paradigm for HIV-disease is now one of managing the long-term consequences of the virus and its treatment rather than the consequences of untreated HIV-disease such as immunosuppression and opportunistic infections. One such long-term consequence is HIV-associated cognitive impairment which is reported to occur in up to 50 % of treated PLWH and has been associated with poorer outcomes. Given the ageing cohort and increased frequency of comorbidities, t

New Developments in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a highly prevalent and chronic disorder that causes considerable psychosocial impairment. This article reviews recent changes in the definition of SAD in DSM-5 and summarizes the current evidence for effective cognitive-behavioral treatments in adults, children, and adolescents. Current data suggests that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious in the treatment of this condition. Among different CBT approaches, individual cognitive therapy may be associated with the largest effect sizes. In this review, interventions targeting dysfunctional cognitive

Lifelong Reading Disorder and Mild Cognitive Impairment: Implications for Diagnosis.

Although neuropsychological tests are commonly used in the evaluation of possible mild cognitive impairment (MCI), poor test scores may be indicative of factors other than neurological compromise. The current study assessed the role of lifelong reading disorder on MCI classification. Community dwelling older adults with a suspected developmental reading disorder were identified by inference based on reading test performance. Individuals with a suspected reading disorder were significantly more likely to perform at a level consistent with MCI on several commonly used neuropsychological tests. T

Metabolic Topology of Neurodegenerative Disorders: Influence of Cognitive and Motor Deficits.

UNLABELLED: Parkinson disease with and without dementia (PDD and PD, respectively), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and Alzheimer dementia (AD) traditionally have been viewed as distinct clinical and pathologic entities. However, intriguing overlaps in biochemical, clinical, and imaging findings question the concept of distinct entities and suggest a continuous spectrum in which individual patients express PD-typical patterns and AD-typical patterns to a variable degree. METHODS: Following this concept, we built a topological map based on regional patterns of the cerebral metabolic rate of g

Progression of cognitive impairments in idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic REM (rapid eye movement) sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD) has been implicated in cognitive impairments, but there is little evidence about progression of cognitive dysfunction in iRBD. METHODS: A retrospective follow-up study with patients with iRBD was performed. Conversion to neurodegenerative disorders was analysed by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Neuropsychological test results at baseline were compared between patients with iRBD and healthy controls. 57 patients with iRBD were successfully followed up for changes of cognitive performance over time (follow-up durat

Appraisals to affect: Testing the integrative cognitive model of bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive models have suggested that extreme appraisals of affective states and maladaptive affect regulation strategies are important in the development of bipolar symptomatology. Little is known about the pathway by which these appraisals and behaviours interact in the formation of activated and depressed affective states. This study tested the predictions that (1) ascent behaviours mediate the relationship between positive appraisals of activated mood and activation; and (2) descent behaviours mediate the relationship between negative appraisals of activated mood and depression.

Sensation-to-cognition cortical streams in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

We sought to determine whether functional connectivity streams that link sensory, attentional, and higher-order cognitive circuits are atypical in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We applied a graph-theory method to the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data of 120 children with ADHD and 120 age-matched typically developing children (TDC). Starting in unimodal primary cortex-visual, auditory, and somatosensory-we used stepwise functional connectivity to calculate functional connectivity paths at discrete numbers of relay stations (or link-step distances). The management of cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder: current status and perspectives.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with important cognitive deficits that persist during the periods of remission. Although these deficits seem to play an important role in the functional impairment experienced by bipolar patients, evidence regarding their clinical management is scant. We revised the databases PubMed, MEDLINE, and clinicaltrials.gov, searching for studies focusing on the pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment of cognitive deficits among bipolar patients. In addition, a manual search of bibliographical cross-references was performed. Currently, there is no Food and D

Cognitive emotion regulation strategies in outpatients with major depressive disorder.

The aim of this study was to examine cognitive emotion regulation strategies in adult outpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD). A clinical sample of 191 MDD outpatients and a non-clinical sample of 267 general adults were recruited. Nine cognitive emotion regulation strategies were assessed in all participants (aged 21-65 years). Results showed that MDD participants had significantly higher scores on the following strategies: self-blame, acceptance, rumination, catastrophizing, and blaming others, but lower scores on positive refocusing, refocus on planning, positive reappraisal, and p

Cognitive styles in depressed children with and without comorbid conduct disorder.

Little is known about patterns of cognitive impairment in depression comorbid with conduct disorder. The study included clinically depressed children with (N = 23) or without conduct disorder (N = 29), and controls without psychiatric disorder (N = 37). Cognitive biases typical of depression and patterns of social information processing were assessed. Both depressed groups had substantially higher rates of negative cognitive distortions, attributional biases and ruminative responses than non-depressed children. Children in the comorbid group made more hostile attributions and suggested more ag

Developmental trajectory of cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder: comparison with schizophrenia.

Both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BP) are associated with neurocognitive deficits. However, it has been suggested that schizophrenia, but not BP, is characterised by premorbid cognitive impairments and neurodevelopmental abnormalities. In this paper, studies investigating neurocognitive deficits in premorbid, high-risk and first-episode BP were reviewed and these findings were compared with outcome of studies in schizophrenia. Available evidence suggests that cognitive deficits are evident in first-episode BP and such deficits can be evident even years before the onset of the illness in

Cognitive styles and clinical correlates of childhood abuse in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: In a relatively small number of previous studies, childhood abuse has been found to be associated with more severe symptom course, earlier onset, greater comorbidity, and greater suicidality in those diagnosed with bipolar disorder. There have been no prior reports looking for any association between childhood abuse and cognitive style. This study aimed to examine the relationship between cognitive factors, such as response styles to depressed mood and dysfunctional attitudes, clinical features, and childhood physical and sexual abuse in this population. METHODS: A total of 157 ad

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and cognitive functions of young children.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is one of the main causes of mental retardation worldwide. Nearly 1% of children in North America are affected from antenatal exposure to ethanol. Its economic burden in industrialized countries is increasing. It is estimated that, in the United States, 4.0 billion dollars are annually expended in the treatment and rehabilitation of these patients. As a pathologic entity, they present with a broad symptomatology. Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the most readily recognized clinical manifestation of these disorders. Various factors seem to contribute in the

Treatment of cognitive, psychiatric, and affective disorders associated with Parkinson's disease.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and add significantly to the burden of disease. These symptoms are most commonly part of the disease spectrum owing to pathological changes within relevant brain regions. Neuropsychiatric problems include disorders of cognition, ranging from mild cognitive impairment to dementia, psychotic symptoms, including, most commonly, well-formed visual hallucinations and paranoid delusions, and mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety. The other common cause of neuropsychiatric problem is secondary to use of dopaminergic drugs. Some

Cognitive disorders and dementia in CKD: the neglected kidney-brain axis.

Epidemiologic data suggest that individuals at all stages of CKD have a higher risk of developing cognitive disorders and dementia. This risk is generally explained by the high prevalence of both symptomatic and subclinical ischemic cerebrovascular lesions. However, other potential mechanisms, including direct neuronal injury by uremic toxins, could also be involved, especially in the absence of obvious cerebrovascular disease. We discuss the prevalence and characteristics of cognitive disorders and dementia in patients with CKD, brain imaging findings, and traditional and nontraditional risk

An empirical evaluation of the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: There is a large body of evidence to indicate that neurocognitive impairments in bipolar disorder (BD) may represent viable endophenotypes; however, a standard consensus-based battery of cognitive tests used to measure them is yet to appear. There is potential for a neurocognitive battery which was developed for use in the related disorder, schizophrenia - the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) - to provide a consistent measurement tool with a standard to which the cognitive capacity of BD can be compared to other disorders. However, its suitability for capturing neurocogni
