Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders when used in conjunction with benzodiazepine pharmacotherapy and when used as a monotherapy. Patients using CBT alone have dropout rates similar to or lower than those patients undergoing other forms of therapy, including benzodiazepines. CBT also works well with patients who do not respond adequately to pharmacotherapy. Combined CBT and benzodiazepine treatment has additive effects when compared with benzodiazepine monotherapy; however, patients receiving combined therapy who subsequently discontinue benzodi

OBJECTIVES: In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD), avoidance behavior (AB) and cognitions (COG) are two important targets of intervention, but so far no studies have directly examined their relative importance. By means of cross-lagged panel models (CLPM), we examined their temporal associations and impacts on outcome in clients with symptoms of SAD while addressing typical methodological challenges.
METHOD: We used data from the first six therapy sessions in a sample of 428 primary care clients (mean [SD] age = 34.6 [12.2], 34.3% men), participating in the P…

BACKGROUND: The prevalent comorbidity of alcohol use disorder (AUD) with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by more severe symptomatology, greater functional impairment, increased suicide risk, and poorer treatment outcomes as compared to either disorder alone. Trauma-focused, cognitive-behavioral interventions delivered alongside interventions for substance use disorders are recommended to reduce PTSD severity and substance use. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD and cognitive-behavioral therapy (i.e., Relapse Prevention [RP]) for AUD are two of the most widely use

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the timing of behavioral versus cognitive change in 10-session cognitive-behavioral therapy for non-underweight eating disorders (CBT-T). We aimed to: (a) evaluate the magnitude of behavioral and cognitive symptom reduction across treatment; and (b) investigate the relation between early behavioral change and subsequent cognitive change. We hypothesized: (a) large and significant reductions in behavioral and cognitive symptoms from pre- to mid-treatment and from pre- to post-treatment; and (b) that early behavioral change would predict subsequent cognitive chan

INTRODUCTION: Peripartum-onset post-traumatic stress disorder is a serious condition that warrants prompt diagnosis and treatment due to its adverse health outcomes for mothers and infants. When the trauma is associated with pregnancy and childbirth, it is known as childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder. Currently, psychotherapy is considered a first-line treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and is also recommended for the peripartum population. One of the psychotherapeutic modalities whose effectiveness has been tested in the perinatal population is trauma-focused cognitive

BACKGROUND: Intensive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) delivers more or longer sessions over a shorter time than standard CBT. This review aimed to examine the effects of intensive CBT in comparison to non-active conditions and other active treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
METHOD: We analyzed standardized mean difference (SMD) at post-treatment and follow-up for OCD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and family accommodation (FA). Moderator analyses and meta-regression were conducted to investigate factors associated with OCD symptom reduction.
RESULTS: Fourteen randomized c…

Obsessive - Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic condition that often responds well to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), though many patients fail to achieve full remission. Ericksonian Hypnotherapy (EH) has been proposed as a promising alternative. This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of CBT and EH against a waitlist control in 99 adults with OCD. Participants received 12 weekly online therapy sessions. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, mid-treatment, and post-treatment using the Padua Inventory-Revised, Yale - Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale - Self-Report (Y-BOCS-SR)…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective but underutilized treatment for bowel disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). We aimed to examine attitudes and perceptions toward CBT in adults with and without bowel DGBI or other gastrointestinal (GI) diseases.
METHODS: We conducted an online survey on perceptions and experiences related to CBT. Presence of bowel DGBI was determined using Rome IV criteria. Responses were compared across individuals with bowel DGBI, other GI diseases, and controls, and between individuals with different types of bowel DGBI including …

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is the main complaint of 5–10% of patients in primary care and is often associated with significant suffering and functional disability. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has demonstrated efficacy in reducing fatigue severity in diverse clinical populations in specialized healthcare settings, with common treatment mechanisms identified across conditions. This study is the first to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a transdiagnostic CBT (tCBT) for a heterogeneous sample of patients suffering from severe and persistent fatigue in a primary care context. METHODS: …

OBJECTIVE: Community integration is a key outcome for individuals with a history of homelessness after they attain permanent housing. The goals of finding purpose, meaning, and belonging in one's community-despite their importance in predicting mental well-being and housing stability-are frequently elusive for recently housed individuals. This study aimed to evaluate a novel psychosocial intervention that combines two evidence-based practices, motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to improve motivation and functional outcomes related to community integration.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely established treatments for mental disorders in children and adolescents and is empirically supported across a wide range of disorders, including evidence from routine care. However, evidence on long-term maintenance of effects in routine outpatient care is still limited, particularly across diagnostic groups. This study examines the long-term, cross-diagnostic effectiveness of CBT in children and adolescents treated under routine outpatient care conditions.
METHODS: Analyses are based on pre-existing routine outcome moni…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on stress, anxiety, burnout, and depression in surgical interns and to determine the optimal timing of CBT. Our hypothesis was that CBT could improve each of these measures and that skills learned in the first semester could be sustained throughout the remainder of the intern year.
DESIGN: A full course of CBT was delivered in 3 sessions, every 2.5 hours, with participants randomized to receive CBT early in the internship (EARLY group, July to December) or after 6 months of internship (LATE group, January to May). Resi…

BACKGROUND: Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is a mental disorder marked by persistent somatic symptoms and maladaptive health-related thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be effective in treating SSD, reducing patients' somatic symptoms, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms. However, challenges remain-including limited access to treatment. Videoconference-based cognitive behavioral therapy (vCBT) has emerged as a promising approach, offering flexible and tailored treatment while addressing the shortage of medical resources and potentially reducin…

OBJECTIVE: Prior research indicates that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) results in moderate-to-large increases in hope and well-being, though long-term treatment outcomes are less clear. This study examined whether gains in these outcomes were maintained up to 36 months after CBT and whether hope - an established change mechanism during treatment - was associated with sustained well-being during long-term follow-up when controlling for post-treatment anxiety and depression.
METHOD: A subset of 69 participants [Mage = 30.29 (SD = 9.94) yrs, 62.32% female, 89.86% White, 89.85% Non-Hispanic/…

Dental phobia is a disabling yet underdiagnosed condition that prevents many patients from seeking essential oral healthcare, leading to avoidable pain, disease progression, and reduced quality of life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most widely supported psychological intervention for specific phobias and has demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing dental anxiety and avoidance. This narrative review synthesizes recent evidence on CBT applications for phobia management, with particular emphasis on dental settings. In addition to reviewing established mechanisms of CBT, this pa…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the applicability of group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) delivered through an online intervention on mental health symptoms and weight change in patients who experienced recurrent weight gain four years after metabolic and bariatric surgery.
METHODS: Participants were recruited from a university bariatric center. Of the 142 postoperative patients assessed, 33 had regained 15% of the total weight lost from their lowest postoperative weight. After excluding 13 patients who declined to participate, 20 were randomly allocated into two groups: the intervention group,
