Cognitive-enhancing and antioxidant activities of inhaled coriander volatile oil in amyloid β(1-42) rat model of Alzheimer's disease.

Coriandrum sativum L., commonly known as coriander and belonging to the Apiaceae family is cultivated throughout the world for its nutritional value. In traditional medicine, coriander is recommended for the relief of pain, anxiety, flatulence, loss of appetite and convulsions. In the present study, the effects of inhaled coriander volatile oil (1% and 3%, daily, for 21days) extracted from C. sativum var. microcarpum on spatial memory performance were assessed in an Aβ(1-42) rat model of Alzheimer's disease. The Aβ(1-42)-treated rats exhibited the following: decrease of spontaneous alternation

Donepezil treatment restores the ability of estradiol to enhance cognitive performance in aged rats: evidence for the cholinergic basis of the critical period hypothesis.

Recent studies suggest that the ability of estradiol to enhance cognitive performance diminishes with age and/or time following loss of ovarian function. We hypothesize that this is due, in part, to a decrease in basal forebrain cholinergic function. This study tested whether donepezil, a cholinesterase inhibitor, could restore estradiol effects on cognitive performance in aged rats that had been ovariectomized as young adults. Rats were ovariectomized at 3 months of age, and then trained on a delayed matching to position (DMP) T-maze task, followed by a configural association (CA) operant con

Therapeutic and prophylactic utility of the memory-enhancing drug donepezil hydrochloride on cognition of patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Substantial progress has been made in identifying how the treatment parameters used in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) impact its cognitive side effects. However, there is limited information regarding the role of memory enhancers in post-ECT cognitive disturbances. We evaluated the therapeutic and prophylactic efficacy of the memory-enhancing drug donepezil hydrochloride on cognition of patients undergoing ECT. METHODS: A triple blind (the study subjects, clinician assessing the cognition, and the data analyst were unaware of subject allocation for trial assessment) randomized co

Changes in physiological arousal to gambling cues among participants in motivationally enhanced cognitive-behavior therapy for pathological gambling: a preliminary study.

Despite somewhat high attrition and relapse rates, cognitive-behavioral interventions for pathological gambling seem promising. As a possible remedy to these problems, we conducted a preliminary study of gambling-specific cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) with the addition of motivational enhancement techniques (MET) for the treatment of pathological gamblers. Data on psychophysiological arousal upon exposure to imagined gambling vignettes were collected at both pre- and posttreatment. Results indicate that participants showed decreases in degree of arousal during the vignettes from pre- to pos

Intervention for Cognitive Reserve Enhancement in Delaying the Onset of Alzheimer's Symptomatic Expression (INCREASE) Study: Results from a Randomized Controlled Study of Medication Therapy Management Targeting a Delay in Prodromal Dementia Symptom Progression.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve has been hypothesized as a mechanism to explain differences in individual risk for symptomatic expression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Inappropriate medications may diminish cognitive reserve, precipitating the transition from preclinical AD (pAD) to a symptomatic state. To date, there is limited data on the potential impact of medication optimization as a potential tool for slowing the symptomatic expression of AD. OBJECTIVES: (1) To test the efficacy of a medication therapy management intervention designed to bolster cognitive reserve in community-dwelling olde

Enhancing the detection of visual-cognitive disruptions in automated dyslexia diagnosis using viscoelastic constitutive artificial neural networks for eye movement analysis.

PURPOSE: Dyslexia can be assessed using eye-tracking technology to monitor reading patterns, but challenges persist in distinguishing dyslexia-specific anomalies from those caused by other factors due to individual reading variability. METHODS: To address these challenges, enhancing the Detection of Visual-Cognitive Disruptions in Automated Dyslexia Diagnosis Using Viscoelastic Constitutive Artificial Neural Networks for Eye Movement Analysis (DVDD-VCANN-EMA) is proposed. Firstly, input data is gathered from ETDD70: Eye-Tracking Dyslexia Dataset. Then the input data is pre-processed employing

Instructed increase in fear activation during exposure exercises does not enhance treatment effects of cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder and agoraphobia.

The efficacy of exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (eCBT) for panic disorder and agoraphobia (PD/AG) is well established, but the mechanisms of action are still under debate. Here we investigated whether increased fear activation (by provoking additional bodily symptoms using interoceptive challenges) during exposure to agoraphobic situations would improve therapy outcome. Individuals diagnosed with PD/AG (N = 124) were randomized to one of the two variants of eCBT, with (exposure plus fear activation; E + FA) and without (exposure alone; E) guided evocation of unpleasant body symptom

Cognitive-Enhancing Effects of Hesperetin-Rich CNE against Neuronal Damage and Memory Impairment by Regulating AKT/Nrf2 and BDNF/CREB Signaling.

Citrus nippokoreana, a traditional Korean citrus species, is rich in flavonoids and polyphenols with antioxidant properties; however, its neuroprotective potential remains unclear. Neurodegeneration is closely associated with oxidative stress, neuronal apoptosis, and impaired synaptic signaling. In this study, we investigated the effects of C. nippokoreana peel extract (CNE, 30% ethanol) using in vitro and in vivo models. CNE significantly protected HT22 hippocampal neurons against glutamate-induced oxidative stress by reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis, while r

Fasudil mitigates diabetes-associated cognitive decline and enhances neuroprotection by suppressing NLRP3/Caspase-1/GSDMD signaling in a stroke mouse model.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity are progressive metabolic disorders that heighten the risk of negative outcomes and cognitive decline after an ischemic stroke with limited treatment options. Previous research has shown that Fasudil, a RhoA kinase inhibitor, has therapeutic benefits in various neurological diseases; however, it is unknown if Fasudil provides neuroprotection in diabetic encephalopathy after ischemic stroke. This study aimed to explore the protective effects of Fasudil in an experimental model of diabetic encephalopathy following a photothrombotic stroke using high-fat diet-

Synaptic Plasticity-Enhancing and Cognitive-Improving Effects of Standardized Ethanol Extract of Perilla frutescens var. acuta in a Scopolamine-Induced Mouse Model.

In our previous study, we demonstrated that a standardized ethanol extract of Perilla frutescens var. acuta (PE) alleviates memory deficits in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model by inhibiting amyloid β (Aβ) aggregation and promoting its disaggregation. However, the extent to which PE exerts additional cognitive benefits independent of Aβ pathology remained unclear. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of PE on synaptic plasticity and learning and memory functions. Male ICR mice were used, and cognitive impairment was induced by scopolamine administration. PE was orally administered at doses
