Language-universal sensory deficits in developmental dyslexia: English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Studies in sensory neuroscience reveal the critical importance of accurate sensory perception for cognitive development. There is considerable debate concerning the possible sensory correlates of phonological processing, the primary cognitive risk factor for developmental dyslexia. Across languages, children with dyslexia have a specific difficulty with the neural representation of the phonological structure of speech. The identification of a robust sensory marker of phonological difficulties would enable early identification of risk for developmental dyslexia and early targeted intervention.

Phenotype of the 22q11.2 deletion in individuals identified through an affected relative: cast a wide FISHing net!

PURPOSE: The chromosome 22q11.2 deletion has been identified in the majority of patients with DiGeorge syndrome, velocardiofacial syndrome, … ce of broadening the index of suspicion in order to provide appropriate recurrence risk counseling, cognitive remediation, and medical management. Further, it underscores the lack of familial concordance and the current lack of genotype-phenotype correlations in this disorder, and it raises the possibility that the deletion is more common than previously reported.

A randomized controlled trial to examine the effects of the Tackling Teenage psychosexual training program for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous research underscores the importance of psychosexual guidance for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Such guidance is provided in the Tackling Teenage Training (TTT) program, in which adolescents with ASD receive psycho-education and practice communicative skills regarding topics related to puberty, sexuality, and intimate relationships. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of the TTT program on (a) cognitive outcomes (i.e. psychosexual knowledge, and insight in interpersonal boundaries) and (b) behavioral outcomes (i.e. skills needed for

The neurocognitive profile of adults with Becker muscular dystrophy in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: In Becker muscular dystrophy evidence for neurocognitive and behavioral comorbidity is evolving. More insight into the extend of these problems is of great importance for early detection and remediation in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed to describe the neurocognitive and behavioral features of a Dutch adult cohort of BMD patients, and to evaluate correlations to motor function outcomes. METHODS: 28 adult BMD patients were included. Intelligence, executive functioning, verbal memory and reaction times were assessed cross-sectionally. Additionally, patients co

Language disintegration in spontaneous speech in Huntington's disease: a more fine-grained analysis.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease causing motor symptoms along with cognitive and affective problems. Recent evidence suggests that HD also affects language across core levels of linguistic organization, including at stages of the disease when standardized neuropsychological test profiles are still normal and motor symptoms do not yet reach clinical thresholds ('pre-manifest HD'). The present study aimed to subject spontaneous speech to a more fine-grained linguistic analysis in a sample of 20 identified HD gene-carriers, 10 with pre-manifest and 10 with early manifest H

Relationship between reaction time, fine motor control, and visual-spatial perception on vigilance and visual-motor tasks in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11DS) is a common microdeletion disorder associated with mild to moderate intellectual disability and specific … 2q11DS when there are no time constraints imposed. While this may have significant implications for cognitive remediation strategies for children with 22q11DS, the relationship between reaction time, visual reasoning, cognitive complexity, fine motor speed and accuracy, and graphomotor ability on visual-motor tasks is still unclear.

Effect of combined neurofeedback and game-based cognitive training on the treatment of ADHD: A randomized controlled study.

Neurofeedback (NF) is referred to as a "possibly efficacious" treatment in the current evidence-based reviews; therefore, more research is needed to determine its effects especially in combination with other treatments. The present study examines the effect of NF and game-based cognitive training on children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Thirty-two male students with ADHD were assigned to NF (N = 16; Mage=10.20; SD = 1.03) and waiting list control (N = 16; Mage = 10.05; SD = 0.83) in a randomized double-blind trial. The children in the NF group based on quantitative ele

Identification and remediation of reading difficulties based on successive processing deficits and delay in general reading.

Widespread learning problems among South African children are associated with the apartheid era and show a need for effective reading programs. In selecting these programs, it is useful to differentiate between children with dyslexia and children whose reading is poor because teaching was inadequate. In this study, the Woodcock Tests of Reading Mastery-Revised and tests modelled on the Cognitive Assessment System were used to define a group of children with deficits in successive processing associated with dyslexia and a group of children with general reading delay. There were two girls and fi

Computerized Cognitive Training by Healthy Older and Younger Adults: Age Comparisons of Overall Efficacy and Selective Effects on Cognition.

Among the non-pharmacological methods under development for maintaining cognitive function across the lifespan is computerized cognitive training (CCT). There has been considerable interest in using CCT to slow or remediate age-related cognitive decline, both normal and pathological. Toward these ends, it would be useful to know how the effects of CCT on cognitive function vary over the course of normal cognitive aging. Are there changes in either 1) the overall efficacy of CCT or 2) which cognitive faculties are affected? To address these two questions, we reanalyzed results from a large onli

Effects of visual remediation on contour integration performance in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Impairments in visual processing, including difficulties in perceptual organization, are well documented in schizophrenia and related serious mental illnesses. These impairments are thought to contribute to reductions in higher-order cognition and functioning. The present study examined whether a visual remediation intervention targeting low- and mid-level visual processing improves perceptual organization in this population. METHODS: Participants with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were randomized to visual remediation (VR) or an active control (AC) condition. The VR i

Acute Treatment with Fucoidan Ameliorates Traumatic Brain Injury-Induced Neurological Damages and Memory Deficits in Rats: Role of BBB Integrity, Microglial Activity, Neuroinflammation, and Oxidative Stress.

There is no acquiesced remedy for the treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI)-associated impairment, especially cognitive decline. The first 24 h after TBI is a golden time for preventing the progress of the impairments. The present study aimed to examine the acute effects of fucoidan on neurological outcomes and memory performance and investigate its potential mechanisms in rats with TBI. Fucoidan (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, i.p.) was injected immediately after TBI induction. Veterinary coma scale (VCS), brain edema, blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity, passive avoidance memory and spatial memo

How words and space collide: Lexical and sublexical reading are reliant on separable reflexive and voluntary attention regions in hybrid tasks.

Reading ability requires the coordination of many cognitive processes to be effective, including spatial attention. Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) evidence from Ekstrand et al. (2019) suggests that lexical reading is more associated with reflexive attentional orienting regions, whereas sublexical reading is more associated with voluntary attentional orienting regions. The current research sought to further examine the neuroanatomical relationship between reading and attention using a novel experimental design in fMRI. Participants performed four hybrid attentional orientin

Balint's syndrome and post-acute brain injury rehabilitation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Balint's syndrome includes the clinical symptom triad of simultagnosia, ocular apraxia and optic ataxia. These symptoms, in combination, are rare and can be quite debilitating as they impact visuospatial skills, visual scanning and attentional mechanisms. CASE STUDY: The literature addressing rehabilitation of individuals with Balint's syndrome is sparse. The current case report describes the outcome of a 58-year old male who presented with Balint's syndrome secondary to severe traumatic brain injury and following completion of a comprehensive post-acute brain injury rehabilitatio

Resistant readers 8 months later: energizing the student's learning milieu by targeted counselling.

Several studies have reported that an alarming large subgroup of poor readers seems to be treatment resistant. This group obviously needs attention beyond standard special education instructions. In Norway, the National Centre for Reading Education and Research has been assigned the task of assisting the school psychological services nationwide in severe cases of reading disabilities. The aim of the present study of a clinical sample of students with severe dyslexia, due to phonological deficits, was to evaluate effects of counselling 8 months after a 2-day assessment at the centre. Sixty-five
