Exercise Training Reduces Cerebrovascular Impedance in Patients with Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment: A 1-Year Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), cerebrovascular impedance modulus ( Z ) was higher than in cognitively normal peers, which is associated with brain hypoperfusion. While 1 yr of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise training (AET) reduced Z in cognitively normal older adults, the effects of AET on aMCI remain unknown. METHODS: Seventy patients with aMCI were randomized into 1 yr of AET ( N = 31) or stretching and toning (SAT, N = 39). At baseline, midpoint (6 months), and trial completion (12 months), Z was assessed using transfer function analysis bet

Memory training through Chinese classics recitation for individuals with subjective cognitive decline: study protocol for a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is a preclinical condition associated with an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, with no consensus regarding effective therapeutic interventions to date. As the global burden of aging-related neurodegenerative diseases continues to rise, early intervention has become increasingly critical. Cognitive training has been proposed as a promising behavioral intervention; however, few studies have integrated multimodal assessments to elucidate its underlying neurobiological and psychological mechanisms, particularly within the educationa

Gray matter and white matter functional connectivity changes induced by rTMS concurrent with cognitive training in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Primarily by targeting the gray matter (GM), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown promise in improving cognitive function in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the impact of rTMS on white matter (WM) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the functional connectivity (FC) changes in both GM and WM induced by rTMS, and explore their relationship with the clinical manifestation of the disease. METHODS: Sixteen patients with mild to moderate AD were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the real rTMS group (n

Co-Designing a Web-Based, Gamified, Auditory-Cognitive Dual-Task Training System for Older Adults with Hearing Loss.

Background: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is associated with decreased communication, reduced social engagement, cognitive decline and an increased risk of dementia globally. Although increasing studies report the benefits of combing auditory and cognitive training for older adults with ARHL, more evidence is needed to examine its effects. Moreover, existing training programs have been developed with minimal end-user involvement leading to low adherence rates. This study aimed to investigate the role of co-design in the development of an auditory-cognitive training system for older adults wi

Treatment of Youth Misophonia: A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Transdiagnostic Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to Psychoeducation and Relaxation Training.

Misophonia is a distinct clinical disorder that lacks official diagnostic classification. Despite growing evidence of the prevalence and impairment associated with this condition, little research has tested possible evidence-based interventions. The current study presents outcomes from a two-site randomized controlled trial (N = 43) comparing the efficacy of the Unified Protocols for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children and Adolescents (UP-C/A; n = 29) to a psychoeducation and relaxation training (PRT; n = 14) intervention for youth with misophonia. Cognitive Training Combined with Multifocal tDCS over the Reading Network Improves Reading Performance: A Case of Severe Dyslexia.

Background: Developmental dyslexia (DD) is the most common form of specific learning disorders (SLDs). From a neurocognitive point of view, dyslexic reading is associated with atypical neurofunctional patterns in the left hemisphere, mainly in the posterior areas linked to lexical access and phonological processing. Nowadays, rehabilitation treatments do not aim to fix the disorder but rather improve adaptive skills. On the other hand, the transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has recently gained popularity in this field. In fact, a few studies have documented enhanced accuracy and sp

Regaining control of your emotions? Investigating the mechanisms underlying effects of cognitive control training for remitted depressed patients.

Studies suggest that cognitive control training shows potential as a preventive intervention for depression. At the same time, little is known regarding the mechanisms underlying effects of cognitive control training. Informed by theoretical frameworks of cognitive risk for recurrent depression (De Raedt & Koster, 2010; Siegle et al., 2007), the current study sought to model direct effects of cognitive control training on the complex interplay between affect, emotion regulation, residual symptomatology, and resilience in a sample of remitted depressed patients (n = 92). Combining a 4-week expe

Embedding Aphasia-Modified Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Script Training for Primary Progressive Aphasia: A Single-Case Pilot Study.

Purpose This study sought to determine the initial feasibility and benefit of a novel intervention that combines speech-language treatment with counseling treatment for an individual with the nonfluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Method Using a single-case experimental design, we evaluated the utility of modified script training paired with aphasia-modified cognitive behavioral therapy. The study employed a multiple baseline design across scripts for the primary linguistic outcome measure and a mixed methods approach for analyzing counseling outcomes. Psychosocial

Assessing neurophysiological changes associated with combined transcranial direct current stimulation and cognitive-emotional training for treatment-resistant depression.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a form of non-invasive brain stimulation, is a promising treatment for depression. Recent research suggests that tDCS efficacy can be augmented using concurrent cognitive-emotional training (CET). However, the neurophysiological changes associated with this combined intervention remain to be elucidated. We therefore examined the effects of tDCS combined with CET using electroencephalography (EEG). A total of 20 participants with treatment-resistant depression took part in this open-label study and received 18 sessions over 6 weeks of tDCS and con

Improved visuospatial neglect after tDCS and computer-assisted cognitive training in Posterior Cortical Atrophy: a single-case study.

Visuospatial neglect (VN) frequently occurs in Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) and requires specific rehabilitation. In this single-case study, we investigated the efficacy of a computer-assisted cognitive training (CCT) alone or coupled with multiple sessions of anodal transcranial direct-current stimulation (A-tDCS) over the right posterior parietal cortex in improving left VN symptoms in a patient with PCA. The digital ReMoVES platform was used for both VN assessment and training. We found a significant improvement after CCT combined with A-tDCS within the limits of a single-case, our resu

Dissociable effects of attention vs working memory training on cognitive performance and everyday functioning following fronto-parietal strokes.

Difficulties with attention are common following stroke, particularly in patients with frontal and parietal damage, and are associated with poor outcome. Home-based online cognitive training may have the potential to provide an efficient and effective way to improve attentional functions in such patients. Little work has been carried out to assess the efficacy of this approach in stroke patients, and the lack of studies with active control conditions and rigorous evaluations of cognitive functioning pre and post-training means understanding is limited as to whether and how such interventions m

Cognitive effects of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with working memory training in fibromyalgia: a randomized clinical trial.

Cognitive dysfunction in fibromyalgia has been reported, especially memory. Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been effective in enhancing this function. We tested the effects of eight sessions of tDCS and cognitive training on immediate and delayed memory, verbal fluency and working memory and its association with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Forty females with fibromyalgia were randomized to receive eight sessions of active or sham tDCS. Anodal stimulation (2 mA) was applied over the DLPFC and online c

Combined mnemonic strategy training and high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation for memory deficits in mild cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: Memory deficits characterize Alzheimer's dementia and the clinical precursor stage known as mild cognitive impairment. Nonpharmacologic interventions hold promise for enhancing functioning in these patients, potentially delaying functional impairment that denotes transition to dementia. Previous findings revealed that mnemonic strategy training (MST) enhances long-term retention of trained stimuli and is accompanied by increased blood oxygen level-dependent signal in the lateral frontal and parietal cortices as well as in the hippocampus. The present study was designed to enhance

"Pushing the Limits": Rethinking Motor and Cognitive Resources After a Highly Challenging Balance Training Program for Parkinson Disease.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for the positive effects of exercise training programs on balance control in Parkinson disease (PD). To be effective, balance training needs to be specific, progressive, and highly challenging. Little evidence exists, however, for how people with PD-related balance impairments perceive highly challenging and progressive balance training programs with dual-task components. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe perceptions of a highly challenging balance training program among people with mild to moderate PD. DESIGN: This study w

Hybrid cognitive behavioral therapy versus relaxation training for co-occurring anxiety and alcohol disorder: a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) is far less effective for those with a co-occurring anxiety disorder. Surprisingly, adding an independent anxiety treatment to AUD treatment does not substantially improve the poor alcohol outcomes of these patients. This may reflect the lack of attention from independent treatments to the dynamic interaction of anxiety symptoms with alcohol use and drinking motivation. On the basis of this view, we assembled a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program designed to both reduce anxiety symptoms and weaken the links between the experience of an

Individual cognitive training of reading disability improves word identification and sentence comprehension in adults with mild mental retardation.

Reading therapy has been shown to be effective in treating reading disabilities (RD) in dyslexic children, but little is known of its use in subjects with mild mental retardation (MR). Twenty adult volunteers, with both RD and mild MR, underwent 60 consecutive weeks in a cognitive remediation program, and were compared with 32 untreated control subjects. The experimental group showed a significant improvement in word identification, as measured by oral production (p=0.0004) or silent reading (p=0.023), and sentence comprehension (p=0.0002). Adults with MR appear to benefit from new approaches

The effect of brain-computer interface training on cognitive function in stroke patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the therapeutic impact of BCI-based interventions on global and domain-specific cognitive functions (attention, memory, and executive function), and activities of daily living in stroke survivors. Furthermore, we seek to identify the potential moderating effects of feedback modes and BCI paradigms on the overall rehabilitative efficacy. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and CNKI databases was conducted to identify eligible randomized-controlled trials (RCTs). Meta-analyses were performed by pooling standa

Integrative social cognition remediation with social skills training for adults: PICSIS - pilot study in autism and schizophrenia.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia share neurodevelopmental alterations, particularly deficits in social cognition (SC) that strongly influence social and functional outcomes. Although social cognition remediation (SCR) and social skills training (SST) have each shown efficacy, no validated intervention yet integrates both approaches. This open-label, prospective study examined the feasibility and preliminary effects of PICSIS (Programme Intégratif de remédiation de la Cognition Sociale et d'Interaction Sociale), a group-based program alternating 19 SCR and 11 SST sessions over 3
