BACKGROUND: Collagenous colitis (CC) is a rare large bowel inflammatory disorder. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze extra-digestive manifestations of CC, associated systemic diseases, clinical course and response to therapeutic regimens.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1989 and 1999, eleven patients were diagnosed as having CC, in two Departments of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, on the basis of usual criteria: chronic watery diarrhea, endoscopic examination showing normal findings and subepithelial collagen band thicker than 10 micrometer.

BACKGROUND: Vocal fold augmentation through an indirect laryngoscopic injection has been largely supplanted by the external approach of vocal fold medialization. Determinations of collagen in specimens of duodenal mucosa taken from 15 patients operated on because of duodenal ulcer with pyloric stenosis were performed. In the ulcer and surrounding tissue, total collagen values were significantly increased when compared with the results in unchanged wall of the duodenum. Collagen polymorphism study showed considerably higher percentage of type I and decreased type III in the ulceration than in control duodenal mucosa. In conclusion, extracellular components of connective tissue may play a role in the formation and course of duodenal ulcer disease.

A randomized, prospective, multicenter study evaluated the efficacy and safety of using collagen shields to deliver drugs after cataract surgery. Collagen shields saturated with an antibiotic and a steroid were placed in 90 eyes postoperatively. A control group of 93 eyes received the same drugs through a peribulbar/retrobulbar injection. One day after surgery, the shield group had significantly less corneal edema, conjunctival hemorrhaging, and postoperative pain and fewer corneal opacities. Toughness and collagen content were measured for various muscle parts of the Japanese abalone, kuro-awabi (Haliotis discus), in relation to muscle structures. Histological findings of muscle, collagen and elastin in obstructed fetal bladders were compared with those of age-matched controls. Muscle thickness was markedly increased, however, the relative collagen content in the muscle was decreased. The ratio of thick-to-thin collagen fibers was markedly increased as was the amount of elastin. These findings suggest that the ratio of thick collagen to elastin has an important role in determining the compliance of the obstructed fetal bladder.
