In search of the missing linkages: continuity of care in U.S. jails.

Persons with symptoms of acute mental illnesses present problems for jail management. Jails have a constitutional duty to provide psychiatric services to all persons in need of such care. However, mental health resources are frequently insufficient to meet the many needs of persons with mental illnesses in jails, and are often inaccessible to those released to the community. This study focuses on the experiences of a cohort of detainees (n = 379) with mental illnesses who have been incarcerated in seven U.S. jails. Data gathered include criminal and demographic characteristics, mental health s

Building Tobacco Treatment Capacity and Sustainability: A Qualitative Study on Implementation of Community Pharmacy Technicians as Community Health Workers.

Community pharmacies are increasingly providing health care services like tobacco treatment and disease-related management but need sustainable models for implementation. As several state Medicaid programs reimburse for community health worker (CHW) services, one promising model is to have pharmacy technicians engage with patients as designated CHWs. This qualitative study interviewed staff in seven California pharmacies about their experience with and perspectives on implementing community pharmacy technicians as CHWs. Guided by implementation science frameworks, data were hand-coded and anal

Challenges in responding to the ebola epidemic - four rural counties, Liberia, August-November 2014.

The first cases of Ebola virus disease (Ebola) in West Africa were identified in Guinea on March 22, 2014. On March 30, the first Liberian case was identified in Foya Town, Lofa County, near the Guinean border. Because the majority of early cases occurred in Lofa and Montserrado counties, resources were concentrated in these counties during the first several months of the response, and these counties have seen signs of successful disease control. By October 2014, the epidemic had reached all 15 counties of Liberia. During August 27-September 10, 2014, CDC in collaboration with the Liberian Min

From implementation to sustainability? A 5-year follow-up on a physical activity counseling program in Uganda for people with HIV and mental health conditions.

Physical activity (PA) interventions benefit people living with HIV and co-morbid mental health conditions, but sustaining them in low-resource settings remains difficult. This study explored the long-term sustainability of a multi-stakeholder PA counseling program in a rural Ugandan fishing community, five years post-implementation. The program integrated a PA counseling into routine HIV care, combining motivational interviewing and self-determination theory. It began with sessions led by health care providers and later transitioned to lay-led group sessions that focused on goal-setting, iden

Caring for children with autism in the school setting.

Children with autism present unique challenges related to communication, behavior, and social skills. Each child with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibits individual characteristics of the disorder. Early identification of autistic spectrum disorder has been shown to improve the child's benefit from educational interventions. There may be health issues related to autism including seizure disorders and dietary restrictions. Students with autism need special consideration when they come to the health office for screening, assessment of injuries, or administration of medication. Collabora

[Assessment of the quality of response to the 2008 cholera outbreak in Contonou (Benin)].

To assess the quality of the response to the 2008 outbreak of cholera in Cotonou (Benin), this retrospective study focused on the health professionals managing the response, community leaders, cases of cholera found in homes and health service documents. The terms of reference used for the purposes of this assessment included the WHO recommendations and the rules set out in the national plan for the fight against epidemics. The resources and method used in this study complied with the norms specified in the plan, as did the epidemiologic follow-up. Community and family interventions concerned

Nutritional risk, nutrition plan and risk of death in older health care service users with chronic diseases: A register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nutritional risk in older health care service users is a well-known challenge. Nutritional risk screening and individualised nutrition plans are common strategies for preventing and treating malnutrition. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether nutritional risk is associated with an increased risk of death and whether a nutrition plan to those at nutritional risk could reduce this potential risk of death in community health care service users over 65 years of age. METHODS: We conducted a register-based, prospective cohort study on older health care service

Addressing a gap in community-engaged research: reporting results of congregations' implementation capacity assessment to research participants.

BACKGROUND: Community-engaged research depends on sharing findings effectively; however, few tools translate implementation capacity and readiness data into actionable feedback. This gap limits community organizations' ability to use results to guide health program implementation, build trust in research, and sustain ongoing participation. This study developed and used a tailored survey response report process for congregations participating in the Engaging Partners in Caring Communities (EPICC) project to support implementation planning and technical assistance. METHODS: The EPICC CFIR-infor

Implementing a risk communication tool to support care planning conversations in long-term care: evaluation of healthcare provider training.

BACKGROUND: Embedding a palliative approach into long-term care (LTC) homes can be hindered by poor communication around prognosis and an individual's personal wishes and goals for care. Risk Evaluation for Support: Predictions for Elder life in their Communities Tool (RESPECT) is a risk communication tool that supports earlier identification of palliative care needs. When paired with established resources like the Serious Illness Conversation (SIC) Guide, these tools have the potential to enable more timely, higher-quality goals-of-care conversations in LTC. We sought to evaluate training pro

Factors Associated with Timeliness of Surgical Repair among Infants with Myelomeningocele: California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative, 2006 to 2011.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine factors associated with timely (0-2 days after birth) myelomeningocele surgical repair. STUDY DESIGN: We examined 2006 to 2011 births from the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative, linking to hospital discharge and vital records. Selected maternal, infant, and delivery hospital characteristics were evaluated to understand disparities in timely repair. Poisson regression was used to estimate adjusted risk ratios (aRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Overall, 399 of the 450 (89%) infants had a timely repair and approximately 80% o

The role of partnerships in promoting physical activity: the experience of Agita São Paulo.

Strategic partnership is a logical approach to face some of the public health problems. However, its application is somewhat more complex. In this paper our experience with three networks (Agita São Paulo, Physical Activity Network of Americas, and Agita Mundo Network) was described. In the case of Agita São Paulo even the name was a consequence of a partnership with a marketing company, and is an idiomatic expression that means much more than just to move your body. It also means to move psychologically and socially, with the concept of "active citizenship". Among the important features of th

Impact of less common and "disregarded" neurodegenerative pathologies on dementia burden in a population-based cohort.

Epidemiological studies investigating the pathological bases of late onset dementia focus on classical markers such as plaques and tangles. The significance of pathologies characteristically associated with rare dementia syndromes such as Pick bodies and severe neuronal loss are considered to be well defined. The significance of other pathologies, often accepted as a feature of neurodegenerative syndromes, such as Hirano bodies and gliosis is not clear. This study investigated the significance of these rarer and 'disregarded' pathologies to dementia in the population. A total of 627 individual

[Limits of deinstitutionalization?--perspective of the specialty clinic].

Deinstitutionalization is a complex process that in the past was often misunderstood solely as a run down or even closure of psychiatric hospitals. Although chronically mentally ill patients were prevented from long term hospitalisation some fundamental mistakes were repeated often: patients were simply discharged without any preparations and outpatient care was badly organised. In some cases this led to therapeutic neglect, social disintegration, homelessness, incarceration or other forms of dramatic loss of quality of life. These findings are internationally confirmed although there are rema

Air flight disaster, posttraumatic stress, and postventive rescue and response: the aftermath of the San Diego PSA 182 plane crash recovery operation, 20 years on.

San Diego in 1978 was the scene of one of the USA's most tragic and traumatic air flight disasters, when an inbound Boeing 727 collided with a small private Cessna 172. The collision occurred in the vicinity of North Park, a suburb of San Diego. All aircraft occupants were killed or injured and many residents were injured. The wreckage was mainly concentrated in an area about the size of a city block, in a temperature of 100 degrees F or more. The whole experience was unlike anything any of the professionals involved had been prepared for, and beyond anything the civilians involved could have
