A rickettsia of the spotted fever group was isolated on three occasions from Ixodes pacificus in western Oregon. These isolations, and additional evidence furnished by complement fixation tests on guinea pigs inoculated with other Oregon ticks of this species, indicate that the association of this rickettsia with the Pacific Coast tick may be widespread. This is the first isolation of a spotted fever group rickettsia from I. pacificus. To determine the accuracy of serological methods in detecting Rift Valley fever (RVF) viral antibodies, we examined serum samples obtained from 418 sheep in the Nile Delta by using five tests. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed with use of a strain of Chlamydia trachomatis, lymphogranuloma venereum serotype 2. The ELISA reactions were monitored by absorbance at 492 nm in a spectrophotometer. A positive control method based on one serum dilution was used to assign ELISA titers to the sera. A case of presumed ocular histoplasmosis was diagnosed in a diabetic patient, and an angiographic study of the ocular lesions was carried out. Results of histoplasmin skin test and the specific complement fixation test were negative. The epidemiologic aspects of histoplasmosis in Europe are considered.
