Penile condylomata acuminata: an experimental model for evaluation of topical self-treatment with 0.5--1.0% ethanolic preparations of podophyllotoxin for three days.

Penile condylomata were eradicated from 22 (54%) of 41 men whose lesions were painted twice (with a 72-hr interval) by the investigator with 8% podophyllotoxin in ethanol and from 83 (48%) of 173 men who self-administered either 0.5 to 1.0% topical preparations twice or thrice daily for three subsequent days. All regimens had identical efficacy; a higher frequency of mild local irritation in the self-medicating group may be outweighed by a relatively lower risk for hazardous systemic absorption. The rate of cure was higher when tumors afflicted the preputial cavity than the urinary meatus or p

Low risk of contamination with human papilloma virus during treatment of condylomata acuminata with multilayer argon plasma coagulation and CO₂ laser ablation.

Multilayer argon plasma coagulation (APC) is a new effective method for the treatment of genital warts. We assessed the generation of aerosols containing human papilloma virus (HPV) DNA during treatment of genital warts with multilayer APC and with CO₂ laser ablation. Surveillance petri dishes, swabs from the glasses and nasolabial folds of the operating physician, and swabs taken from the suction units used during CO₂ laser ablation were tested by HPV PCR. HPV DNA corresponding to patient derived HPV types of genital warts was not found in any of the petri dishes and swabs obtained during APC

[Association between human papillomavirus infection, premalignant lesions of anal cancer, and the human immunodeficiency virus: prospective study on subjects with condylomata acuminata].

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) increases the risk for anal premalignant lesions associated to human papillomavirus infection (HPV). The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of HPV and squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) in patients with anal warts, with and without anti-HIV antibodies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: HPV was identified using in situ hybridization and SIL was classified in high and low grade. RESULTS: HPV infection was more frequent in anti-HIV positive patients although the difference was not statistically significant. All patients with a high grade SIL w

Condylomata acuminata, giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke-Loewenstein tumour) and verrucous squamous carcinoma of the perianal and anorectal region: a continuous precancerous spectrum?

Seven patients with perianal and anorectal giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke-Loewenstein tumour) are presented. In five of these patients histopathological examination of the lesions disclosed varying degrees of dysplasia and/or squamous carcinoma. The clinicopathological features and aetiology of perianal and anorectal condylomata acuminata, giant condyloma acuminatum and verrucous carcinoma are discussed. The viral induction and malignant transformation of these papillomatous squamous lesions are emphasized.

[Condylomata acuminata. The correlation between affecting sexual partners and the risk of developing preneoplasia of the cervix uteri. The therapeutic potentials of the Nd-Yag laser].

The present study summarized results from 206 patients (120 females and 80 males) with diagnosis condylomata acuminata. The diagnostic and surveillance methods used in the present work were: clinical, colposcopic, histologies and microbiological examination. 114 from all patients--46.5% females, and 62.2% males were sexual partners. In 25 women (43.8%) from that group HPV-lesions were found. In 8 patients with cervical lesions CIN I-III was diagnosed. Our results confirmed the previously announced literary data about an enhanced risk for CIN development in women with HPV infection, whose sexua

Recurrent vulvar Buschke-Löwenstein's tumor-like condylomata acuminata and Hodgkin's disease effectively treated with recombinant interferon-alpha 2c gel as adjuvant to electrosurgery.

The local application of recombinant interferon-alpha 2c hydrogel (1 x 10(6) IU IFN-alpha 2c per g) given as an adjuvant after electrosurgery led to a complete cure of previously recalcitrant untreatable giant Buschke-Löwenstein's tumor-like condylomata acuminata of a 19-year-old patient suffering from Hodgkin's disease (stage II/II). Interferon-alpha 2c hydrogel given as adjuvant with surgery may have more direct antiproliferative and antiviral activities than immunomodulating defects. This combined topical application is an effective and safe treatment which is recommended especially in immu

Adjuvant photodynamic therapy does not prevent recurrence of condylomata acuminata after carbon dioxide laser ablation-A phase III, prospective, randomized, bicentric, double-blind study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrence after therapy for anogenital warts, or condylomata acuminata (CA), is common. Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) using 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is efficient in the treatment of CA, but one problem with PDT is the limited penetration depth of photosensitizer and light. Pre-PDT vaporization of CA using a carbon dioxide (CO(2)) laser may enhance efficacy. OBJECTIVES: CO(2) laser ablation was followed by ALA-PDT in a phase III prospective randomized bicenter double-blind study to prevent recurrence of CA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred seventy-five patients with CA

Evaluation of non-radioactive temperature gradient SSCP analysis and of temperature gradient gel electrophoresis for the detection of HPV 6-variants in condylomata acuminata and Buschke-Loewenstein tumours.

A modified non-radioactive single strand conformation polymorphism analysis incorporating a temperature gradient (TG-SSCP) and temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) were evaluated for the detection of human papillomavirus type 6 (HPV 6)-variants in 41 condylomata acuminata and 5 Buschke-Loewenstein tumours. TG-SSCP and TGGE analysed part of the transforming ORF E6 of HPV 6 spanning nucleotides 10 to 495. TG-SSCP distinguished between 8 HPV 6-variants whereas TGGE demonstrated 6 different DNA-species. HPV 6-strains found in Buschke-Loewenstein tumours did not vary in the analysed port

Levels of immunoglobulin G antibodies against defined epitopes of the L1 and L2 capsid proteins of human papillomavirus type 6 are elevated in men with a history of condylomata acuminata.

Sera from 159 men attending the sexually transmitted disease clinic at Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, were analyzed for the presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG antibodies to a panel of synthetic peptides derived from the E2, L1, and L2 regions of the human papillomavirus types 1 (HPV 1), 6, 8, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 33. The study subjects were divided into three groups: (i) asymptomatic men with no history of genital warts who served as controls, (ii) men with visible condylomata, and (iii) men who had previously been afflicted with condylomata. There were no significant differenc

What is the most relevent factor causing pain during ALA-PDT? A multi-center, open clinical pain score research trial of actinic keratosis, acne and condylomata acuminata.

BACKGROUND: To date, it has been reported that the intrinsic factors(lesions location, lesions area, disease tynpes) and extrinsic factors(fluence rate) contribute to the pain during 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT). But there are few studies on pain during ALA-PDT and lack of sufficient clinical evidence related to the pain intensity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate pain intensity and its relative factors during ALA-PDT and to provide clinical implication. METHODS: The pain numeric rating scale (PNRS) score was used to evaluate the patients' pain intensity at different times d

Condylomata acuminata in the neovagina and vulva with HPV6/18 infection in a patient with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome after sheares' vaginoplasty: a case report and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome patients who undergo vaginoplasty are at risk of developing HPV-related lesions throughout their life, from low risk condylomata acuminata (CA) to cancerous lesions. However, the HPV status of neovaginal lesion in this patient group were often undocumented. We reported a case of CA, with HPV type 6 and 18 positive, affecting both the neovagina and vulva in a MRKH patient who underwent vaginoplasty (12 months ago). Additionally, we explore the relationship between HPV infection and neovaginal lesions through a review of current literatu

[Vulvar cancer originating from pointed condylomas--case report].

A vulvar cancer is demonstrated. Its origin from condylomata acuminata is discussed. The ultrastructural evidence of papillomavirusparticles within the nucleus of koilocytes are hints at a possible human papillomavirus etiology of vulvar carcinoma. Because of the malign transformation of condylomata acuminata described we recommend a consequent treatment and histologic examination of condylomata acuminata.

Human papillomavirus DNA in female condylomata.

We have studied the presence and state of human papillomavirus (HPV) genomes in condylomata acuminata of the vulva, vagina, and cervix and in flat condylomas of the cervix from Japanese females by DNA hybridization with HPV 6 and 11 DNAs. Unintegrated HPV 6-related DNA (HPV 6 or 11 DNA) was detected in 55 out of 60 condylomata acuminata and in 1 out of 4 flat condylomas under stringent hybridization conditions. The HPV DNAs were identified as HPV 6 DNA in 29 condylomata acuminata (20 vulvar, 3 vaginal, and 6 cervical samples) and 1 flat condyloma and as HPV 11 DNA in 6 condylomata acuminata (6

Comparison of 5-fluorouracil and CO2 laser for treatment of vaginal condylomata.

Seventy nonpregnant women with extensive condylomata of the vagina were treated either with intravaginal 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) cream or the CO2 laser. Treatment results were correlated with the morphologic type of condylomata, ie, papillary acuminata (58 patients), and flat condylomata (12 patients). Ten and 31% of women with Condylomata acuminata had persistent disease within nine months after a single course of 5-FU and laser therapy, respectively. Total failure rates after a second either 5-FU or laser treatment were 3.4%. The failure rates for flat condylomata were 50 and 16.6% after 5-FU
