Correlates of Suicidality Among A Community-Based Cohort of Women Sex Workers: The Protective Effect of Social Cohesion.

Suicide is a critical public health concern globally. Sex workers experience a disproportionate burden of social and health inequities driven by forms of violence, stigma, and criminalization, yet empirical research on suicidality is limited. This study longitudinally investigated the burden and socio-structural correlates of recent suicidality among women sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. Data (2010-2017) were drawn from a community-based, prospective cohort of cis and trans women sex workers across Metro Vancouver. Women completed biannual interviewer-administered questionnaires, and correla

Neighborhood social cohesion and viral suppression after HIV diagnosis.

Social cohesion has varying effects on health. We investigated the association of perceived neighborhood social cohesion with HIV viral suppression using individual-level data from the New York City HIV registry and surveillance-based interviews (n = 92). Suppression was achieved within 12 months of HIV diagnosis by 60 percent of persons perceiving low cohesion and 71 percent of those perceiving high (p = 0.31). Controlling for demographic and clinical characteristics and neighborhood poverty, per proportional hazards regression, cohesion was not associated with suppression (adjusted hazards r

Blurred lines: Emergency preparedness, resilience and response within local authorities compared with organisations within the wider health economy.

This paper looks at the integration of local authorities within the emergency preparedness, resilience and response (EPRR) system for health. The experience of the author, who works within this field for a local authority, is that current guidance is unclear and has affected integration of local authorities into the EPRR system. This paper therefore aims to identify why these issues exist and to assist in driving changes to current guidance, documentation and procedures.

Psychiatric Collaboration Models in Israel.

We present a literature review of collaborative enterprises between psychiatrists and primary care physicians in Israel and other countries. Also described are local psychiatric liaison initiatives in Israel, as well as landmark studies of collaborative psychiatric care. These studies demonstrate the superiority of community psychiatric liaison models in the treatment of patients suffering from depressive anxiety disorders and somatization disorder. In light of the mental health reform process currently underway in Israel, it is important to develop, implement and assess such liaison models.

The Employer-Led Health Care Revolution.

To tame its soaring health care costs, intel tried many popular approaches: "consumer-driven health care" offerings such as high-deductible/low-premium plans, on-site clinics and employee wellness programs. But by 2009 intel realized that those programs alone would not enable the company to solve the problem, because they didn't affect its root cause: the steadily rising cost of the care employees and their families were receiving. Intel projected that its health care expenditures would hit a whopping $1 billion by 2012. So the company decided to try a novel approach. As a large purchaser of h

How are academic age, productivity and collaboration related to citing behavior of researchers?

References are an essential component of research articles and therefore of scientific communication. In this study we investigate referencing (citing) behavior in five diverse fields (astronomy, mathematics, robotics, ecology and economics) based on 213,756 core journal articles. At the macro level we find: (a) a steady increase in the number of references per article over the period studied (50 years), which in some fields is due to a higher rate of usage, while in others reflects longer articles and (b) an increase in all fields in the fraction of older, foundational references since the 19

Building collaborative enterprise.

Can large companies be both innovative and efficient? Yes, argue Adler, of the University of Southern California; Heckscher, of Rutgers; and Prusak, an independent consultant. But they must develop new organizational capabilities that will create the atmosphere of trust that knowledge work requires--and the coordinating mechanisms to make it scalable. Specifically, such organizations must learn to: Define a shared purpose that guides what people at all levels of the organization are trying to achieve together; Cultivate an ethic of contribution in which the highest value is accorded to people

Replicator dynamics in public goods games with reward funds.

Which punishment or rewards are most effective at maintaining cooperation in public goods interactions and deterring defectors who are willing to freeload on others' contribution? The sanction system is itself a public good and can cause problematic "second-order free riders" who do not contribute to the provisions of the sanctions and thus may subvert the cooperation supported by sanctioning. Recent studies have shown that public goods games with punishment can lead to a coercion-based regime if participation in the game is optional. Here, we reveal that even with compulsory participation, re

Exploring the evolved concept of NEWCOMER: experimental tests of a cognitive model.

Enduring human coalitions face the adaptive problem of integrating new members. Although newcomers can provide benefits (e.g., additional labor), newcomers can also create costs (e.g., by free riding). Due to the unique adaptive problems they pose, we hypothesize that the mind contains an evolved concept of NEWCOMER. We test the design of this concept experimentally and show that the activation of the NEWCOMER concept elicits a variety of anti-free rider responses (e.g., a decrease in trust) with adaptively-targeted exceptions (e.g., a minimal increase in exclusion sentiment). These results su

BioMEMS: forging new collaborations between biologists and engineers.

This video describes the fabrication and use of a microfluidic device to culture central nervous system (CNS) neurons. This device is compatible with live-cell optical microscopy (DIC and phase contrast), as well as confocal and two photon microscopy approaches. This method uses precision-molded polymer parts to create miniature multi-compartment cell culture with fluidic isolation. The compartments are made of tiny channels with dimensions that are large enough to culture neurons in well-controlled fluidic microenvironments. Neurons can be cultured for 2-3 weeks within the device, after which

Building a campus crisis team.

Crisis events can produce waves of shock, fear, and disbelief throughout a community. The university campus is a community and no stranger to crisis events. Incidents such as natural disasters, bus accidents, fire, and death on campus have demonstrated this fact. Communities, including the university, are becoming more aware of the need to develop plans to respond to these crisis events. Communities that are prepared to respond to such events may moderate the impact that the crisis has on a community. This article discusses the issues confronted by a small liberal arts university's faculty and

Friendship, cliquishness, and the emergence of cooperation.

The evolution of cooperation is a central problem in biology and the social sciences. While theoretical work using the iterated prisoner's dilemma (IPD) has shown that cooperation among non-kin can be sustained among reciprocal strategies (i.e. tit-for-tat), these results are sensitive to errors in strategy execution, cyclical invasions by free riders, and the specific ecology of strategies. Moreover, the IPD assumes that a strategy's probability of playing the PD game with other individuals is independent of the decisions made by others. Here, we remove the assumption of independent pairing b

The Baltic Health Network - Taking Secure, Internet-based Healthcare Networks to the Next Level.

Internet-based health care networks are a step forward compared to first generation health care networks, which has been limited to pushing text-based messages between different systems. An Internet-based network can also "pull" data - and not only text but any digital data - for instance images and video sequences. The Internet-based networks can more effectively fulfil the vision of access to relevant data regardless of time and location. Although far from identical, the health delivery systems of Denmark, Norway and Sweden are similar. They also share a shortage of specialized health person

Comparative case study of two biomedical research collaboratories.

BACKGROUND: Working together efficiently and effectively presents a significant challenge in large-scale, complex, interdisciplinary research projects. Collaboratories are a nascent method to help meet this challenge. However, formal collaboratories in biomedical research centers are the exception rather than the rule. OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of this paper is to compare and describe two collaboratories that used off-the-shelf tools and relatively modest resources to support the scientific activity of two biomedical research centers. The two centers were the Great Lakes Regional Center for

Parental medical neglect in the treatment of adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Although childhood sexual abuse has been a frequent focus of research on eating disorders, other forms of maltreatment have been less commonly reported. Parental medical neglect is examined in this study as having serious consequences for the treatment and prognosis of patients with anorexia nervosa. METHOD: Two case studies illustrate parental interference with treatment in which Child Protective Services (CPS) had to be involved in compliance with state law. Two adolescent females who were admitted for treatment for anorexia nervosa are presented. RESULTS: In both cases, the par

Treatment adherence in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis--a review.

Adherence to long-term complex treatment in children with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) is a major problem. This article reviews psychosocial factors that compromise treatment adherence and discusses ways to improve long-term adherence. Child-centred information, therapy management, behaviour modification, and parental monitoring are described as adherence facilitating strategies for clinical and non-clinical settings. Finally, the implications for further practice and research are discussed.

[Dupuytren's contracture (author's transl)].

The previous treatment, and the open palm and finger technique as described by MacCash and Borden were reviewed. The experience of the author with a case of bilateral recurrent Dupuytren's contracture with severe shrinkage of the skin and an almost total lack of cooperation on the patient's side is added. It is felt that in spite of a crust formation, which seemed at first to interfere with as excellent a result as reported by Borden, the open skin technique encourages further trials, especially in cases with severe shrinkage of the skin combined with psychic disorders, making the cooperation
