Sunflowers as a trap crop for reducing soybean losses to the stalk borer Dectes texanus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae).

Larvae of Dectes texanus LeConte cause significant losses to soybean production in the American High Plains by girdling the stalks of mature plants at their base, causing them to lodge. The authors demonstrated that cultivated sunflowers can reduce rates of D. texanus infestation in adjacent soybean fields because adult females prefer sunflower over soybean for feeding and oviposition. Since females do not avoid ovipositing in plants already containing their own eggs or those of conspecific females, sunflower plants can accumulate multiple eggs, and subsequent larval combat typically results i

Impact of pesticides on honeybees (Apis mellifera) physiology, foraging and colony: An overview.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) play an indispensable role in global agricultural production, pollinating crops that support approximately one-third of the world's food supply and bolstering biodiversity through these essential ecosystem services. Yet, their survival is severely threatened by multiple environmental stressors, including biological (e.g. pathogens, parasites) and chemical (e.g. plant protection products/agents) factors, particularly pesticides. Pesticides, a broad spectrum of agrochemicals such as insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides are widely deployed to protect crops from inse

Phosphate acquisition and metabolism in plants.

Plants need at least 13 different nutrients to maintain optimal growth. Nitrogen and phosphorus, from the Greek 'phôs' (meaning 'light') and 'phoros' (meaning 'bearer'), are the main nutrients limiting plant growth in both agricultural and natural ecosystems. Agriculture has relied heavily since the mid 1950s on the use of synthetic ammonium- and phosphorus-based fertilizers to increase crop productivity. While industrial synthesis of ammonium relies on the chemical conversion of atmospheric nitrogen, phosphorus is mined from finite reserves concentrated in a few countries. Considering our cur

Expanding photosynthesis through biosolar oxic N2 fixation: toward a sustainable BioNitrogen Economy.

Atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) is far more abundant than carbon dioxide (CO2), yet photosynthesis has been studied and harnessed predominantly for photosynthetic carbon fixation (PCF), underpinning the global biocarbon economy. In contrast, biological N2 fixation-the natural gateway for atmospheric nitrogen into the biosphere-remains comparatively underexploited. Modern agriculture and industry consequently depend heavily on the fossil-fuel-intensive Haber-Bosch process, with substantial energy and environmental costs. Diazotrophic cyanobacteria offer a fundamentally different paradigm by couplin

Revitalization of plant growth-promoting plant allied microbes: an eco-friendly approach for agricultural and environmental sustainability.

Plants are increasingly recognized as metaorganisms because they harbor diverse and dynamic microbial communities that establish intricate s … ed across the literature, limiting a comprehensive understanding of their potential for sustainable crop production. To address this gap, this review synthesizes recent advances in the ecology, functional mechanisms, and agricultural significance of plant growth-promoting plant-allied microbes, with particular emphasis on their roles in improving nutrient availab …

Nano-enabled disruption of bacterial virulence and communication in plant pathosystems: emerging strategies for sustainable disease management.

Bacterial diseases are a major cause of crop losses worldwide, threatening food security and the sustainability of agricultural production. Traditional management practices heavily rely on antibiotics, resistant strains and copper-based compounds but their continued efficiency is hampered by antimicrobial resistance, ecological issues and rapid evolution of pathogens. Nano-enabled anti-virulence strategies offer a novel approach that specifically targets bacterial virulence instead of the killing of the pathogens alone, which can potentially reduce the pressure for resistance development. This

Engineering CO2-fixing modules in Escherichia coli via efficient assembly of cyanobacterial Rubisco and carboxysomes.

Rubisco (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) is the central enzyme for conversion of atmospheric CO2 into organic molecules, playing a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. In cyanobacteria and some chemoautotrophs, Rubisco complexes, together with carbonic anhydrase, are enclosed within specific proteinaceous microcompartments known as carboxysomes. The polyhedral carboxysome shell ensures the dense packaging of Rubisco and creates a high-CO2 internal environment to facilitate CO2 fixation. Rubisco and carboxysomes have been popular targets for bioengineering, with the intent

Hormetic effect of glyphosate persists during the entire growth period and increases sugarcane yield.

BACKGROUND: Stimulation of plant growth by low doses of a toxic compound is defined as a hormetic effect. Exposure of plants to low doses of glyphosate can cause stimulatory effects on growth or other variables. Sugarcane is the major biofuel and sugar-production crop cultivated in Brazil, but its expansion to new areas is limited; therefore, there is a demand for new technologies to improve sugarcane production per unit area. The use of pesticides to stimulate growth through the hormetic effect might be a suitable strategy to increase sugarcane yields. The purpose of this research was to inve

Putting the Mess in Order: Aspergillus welwitschiae (and Not A. niger) Is the Etiological Agent of Sisal Bole Rot Disease in Brazil.

Approximately 75% of the worldwide production of hard natural fibers originates from sisal, an industrial crop from arid and semiarid tropical regions. Brazil is the world's largest producer of sisal fiber, accounting for more than 40% of the worldwide production, and sisal bole rot disease has been the main phytosanitary problem of this crop. All previous studies reporting Aspergillus niger as the causal agent of the disease were based on the morphological features of fungal isolates from infected plant tissues in pure cultures. Black aspergilli are one of the most complex and difficult group

Occurrence and distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes associated with rice in the south-eastern Agro-climatic Zone (IIIA) of Bihar, India.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a major staple cereal crop that sustains nearly two-thirds of the global population, particularly in Asia. India is one of the leading producers and consumers of rice, with the state of Bihar playing a significant role in national rice production. However, rice productivity is constrained by several biotic and abiotic factors, among which plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) represent an important yet often overlooked limitation. Rice grown under waterlogged conditions is vulnerable to infestation by various PPNs, resulting in substantial yield losses. The present study w

Responding to harvest failure: Understanding farmers coping strategies in the semi-arid Northern Ghana.

Farmers coping strategies against harvest failures have implication for future adaptation to such shocks. Previous studies on farmers' vulnerability and response to shocks have emphasized on adaptation, at the expense of their coping to such shocks. Using a survey data from 299 farm households in northern Ghana, this study has analyzed farmers' coping strategies against harvest failure, and the drivers of the choice and intensity of the coping strategies. The empirical results show that most of the households used liquidation of productive assets, reduction in consumption, borrowing from famil

A large European diversity panel reveals complex azole fungicide resistance gains of a major wheat pathogen.

Fungicide resistance in crop pathogens poses severe challenges to sustainable agriculture. Demethylation inhibitors (DMIs) are critical for controlling crop diseases but face rapid resistance gains. Even though the main molecular basis of resistance is well established, field surveys have repeatedly revealed alternative resistance mechanisms. The European continent has seen rapid and heterogeneous gains in azole resistance. Here, we establish a large genome panel to dissect the genetic architecture of emerging resistance in the major wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici. The European diversity

Biological nitrogen fixation in the context of global change.

The intensive application of fertilizers during agricultural practices has led to an unprecedented perturbation of the nitrogen cycle, illustrated by the growing accumulation of nitrates in soils and waters and of nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere. Besides increasing use efficiency of current N fertilizers, priority should be given to value the process of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) through more sustainable technologies that reduce the undesired effects of chemical N fertilization of agricultural crops. Wider legume adoption, supported by coordinated legume breeding and inoculation prog

Melatonin-mediated metabolic reprogramming and stress adaptation in plants.

Melatonin acts as a multifunctional regulator of plant stress adaptation by reprogramming primary and secondary metabolism and coordinating ROS, nitric oxide, and phytohormone signalling. Integrating metabolomics with transcriptomics and proteomics provides new insights into these mechanisms and highlights melatonin as a promising strategy for enhancing crop resilience and productivity under diverse environmental stresses. Plants, being sessile, are continuously exposed to diverse environmental challenges, which disrupt cellular homeostasis and reduce crop productivity. To survive under such c

Properties, toxicity and current applications of the biolarvicide spinosad.

Characterized as a highly valuable bioactive natural product, spinosad is a pesticide with a complex chemical structure, composed of spinosyn A and D, molecules synthesized by the actinomycete Saccharopolyspora spinosa. The larvicidal activity of spinosad was postulated to be a promising approach to combat crop pests and control species responsible to transmit mosquito-borne illness, including Aedes aegypti. Although initially deemed as relatively safe for non-target organisms and highly effective against insects and crop pests, recent studies focused on the toxicity profile detected the occur
