Incidence of urinary tract infections and antibiotic resistance in the outpatient setting: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: In 2012-2013, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in women visiting a general practitioner for urinary tract infection (UTI), to estimate the annual incidence of UTIs due to antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli). METHODS: A sampling design (stratification, stages and sampling weights) was taken into account in all analyses. Urine analyses were performed for each woman and centralised in one laboratory. RESULTS: Among 538 included women, urine culture confirmed UTI in 75.2 % of cases. E. coli represented 82.8 % of species. Among E. coli, resistance (I + R) was most commo

Vaccination of monoglycosylated hemagglutinin induces cross-strain protection against influenza virus infections.

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic and recent human cases of H5N1, H7N9, and H6N1 in Asia highlight the need for a universal influenza vaccine that can provide cross-strain or even cross-subtype protection. Here, we show that recombinant monoglycosylated hemagglutinin (HAmg) with an intact protein structure from either seasonal or pandemic H1N1 can be used as a vaccine for cross-strain protection against various H1N1 viruses in circulation from 1933 to 2009 in mice and ferrets. In the HAmg vaccine, highly conserved sequences that were originally covered by glycans in the fully glycosylated HA (HAfg) are e

Prevalence of parasitic infections in HIV-positive patients in southern Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal parasitic infections are a major public health burden in tropical countries. Although all HIV/AIDS patients are susceptible to parasitic infections, those having lower immune status are at greater risk. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in patients living with HIV/AIDS. METHODOLOGY: This was a facility-based cross-sectional study. A total of 343 consecutively sampled HIV/AIDS patients from the HIV care clinic of Hawassa University Referral Hospital were included. Subjects were interviewed for demographic variables

Effect of mixed infections of Sindbis and La Crosse viruses on replication of each virus in vitro.

Mixed viral infections are ubiquitous in natural populations and may have significant but unpredictable biological and epidemiological consequences. These infections may be acquired simultaneously (coinfection) or result from two single infections at different time intervals (superinfection). This study investigated the effect of mixed infections of two mosquito-borne viruses, Sindbis (SINV) and La Crosse (LACV), on the replication of each virus in vertebrate baby hamster kidney (BHK) and invertebrate Aedes albopictus (C6/36) cell lines. SINV and LACV were inoculated onto confluent monolayers

Cross-sectional study of pharyngeal and genital chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections in emergency department patients.

OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) are the most commonly reported diseases in the USA, with increasing concern regarding cephalosporin-resistant GC strains and growing discussion of routine male screening and analysing extragenital sites. Hospital emergency departments (EDs) may be appropriate screening venues, and our objective was to identify the extent of genital and oropharyngeal CT/GC infection in ED patients. METHODS: From June 2012 to March 2013, ED patients aged 15-34 were asked to provide a urine sample and oropharyngeal swab for CT/GC analysis and

The prevalence of common skin infections in four districts in Timor-Leste: a cross sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Skin infections are a common public health problem in developing countries; however, they are rarely managed using a population based approach. Recent data on the burden of skin infections in Timor-Leste are limited. Our survey appears to be the only widespread survey conducted in more than 30 years and was designed to determine the baseline prevalence of some common skin infections in Timor-Leste. METHODS: We conducted a cross sectional survey in 14 sites including community health clinics, schools and hospitals within four different geographical regions. Participants were examin

Helicobacter pylori, helminth infections and growth: a cross-sectional study in a high prevalence population.

AIM: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is usually acquired in childhood and may adversely affect growth, although data are inconsistent. This study investigated growth parameters in a paediatric cohort with a high prevalence of H. pylori and helminth infection. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of African refugee children (<16 years) recruited at their initial health assessment following resettlement in Australia. Detailed demographic, infection and anthropometric data were obtained. H. pylori infection was diagnosed by monoclonal faecal antigen enzyme immunoassay testing (MFAT). Growt

Subclinical tubular injury in HIV-infected individuals on antiretroviral therapy: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Randomized control studies have not shown an association between treatment with tenofovir (TDF) and clinically significant kidney toxicity. However, multiple cases of renal tubular toxicity have been described in patients with HIV treated with TDF. It is unclear whether spot urine protein- or albumin-creatinine ratio is a sufficiently sensitive screening test to detect subclinical renal tubular toxicity in patients with HIV. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: 99 patients with HIV with serum creatinine levels < 1.70 mg/dL and dipstick-negative proteinuria; 19 w

Possible congenital infection with La Crosse encephalitis virus--West Virginia, 2006-2007.

La Crosse encephalitis virus (LACV) is a mosquitoborne bunyavirus of the California encephalitis serogroup. During 2003--2007, West Virginia had the greatest number of cases (95) and highest incidence of LACV disease (5.1 cases per 100,000 population) of any state.* The majority of persons infected with LACV either have no symptoms or a mild febrile illness; a limited number experience encephalitis. Although only 1%--4% of those infected with LACV develop any symptoms, children aged <16 years are at highest risk for severe neurologic disease and possible long-term sequelae. The effects of LACV

HIV and parasitic co-infections in tuberculosis patients: a cross-sectional study in Mwanza, Tanzania.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in Mwanza, Tanzania, to determine the burden of HIV and parasitic co-infections among patients who were confirmed or suspected cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Of the 655 patients investigated, 532 (81.2%) had been confirmed as PTB cases, by microscopy and/or culture (PTB+), whereas the other 123 (18.8%) were only suspected cases, on the basis of other clinical criteria (PTB-). Hookworm and Schistosoma mansoni infections were common in the patients, with prevalences of 18% and 34%, respectively. Malarial, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and

Serological survey and active surveillance for La Crosse virus infections among children in Tennessee.

In 1998 and 1999, we performed a serosurvey and active surveillance for La Crosse encephalitis at a children's hospital in eastern Tennessee. Fifteen cases of La Crosse encephalitis were confirmed. Only 5 (0.5%) of 1000 serum samples being tested at the state laboratory for other diseases had evidence of antibodies to La Crosse virus. These findings suggest that La Crosse virus is newly endemic to eastern Tennessee.

Worm development in hamsters infected with unisex and cross-mated Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium.

Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium coexist in Egypt and in other areas in Africa, and people frequently are infected with parasites of both species. The effects of the interactions between worms of both sexes of the 2 species on development and egg laying were evaluated in vivo by infecting hamsters with cercariae from Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus snails infected with single miracidia. In hamsters with unisex infections, male worms of both species were small. Schistosoma mansoni females were stunted and partially mature but did not contain eggs. Schistosoma haema

[Lassa and Mozambique viruses: cross protection in experiments on mice and action of immunosuppressants on experimental infections].

The pathogenicity of Mozambique virus for random-bred mice and CBA mice was studied. In contrast to Lassa virus, intracerebral inoculation of newborn zandom-bred mice with Mozambique virus (1000 PFU/mouse) results in death of the animals. The pathogenic properties of both viruses for adult CBA mice were found to be similar: intracerebral inoculation of the viruses caused death of the animals within 6-8 days, but not intraperitoneal inoculation. With the latter, they produced a population of immunocompetent cells protecting syngeneic recipient mice against the lethal intracerebral inoculation o

Indirect fluorescent-antibody technique for serological diagnosis of La Crosse (California) virus infections.

A clinically relevant indirect fluorescent-antibody technique (IFA) was developed for the serological diagnosis of La Crosse virus infections. The IFA (67%) was as sensitive as the hemagglutination inhibition (58%) and neutralization (58%) tests in the detection of antibodies in acute-phase specimens. Immunoglobulin M antibodies were detected by the IFA test in 48% (11 of 23) of these specimens. Diagnostically significant increases in IFA titer were detected in 86% (19 of 22) of the paired samples. Antibodies were detectable in some patients 7 years after infection; however, the IFA test was n

Attempted experimental cross infections with mammalian guinea-worms, Dracunculus spp. (Nematoda: Dracunculoidea).

Dracunculus medinensis and D. insignis are morphologically indistinguishable. Experiments to test the susceptibility of various mammalian hosts to these two guinea worm species are described. Infective 3rd-stage larvae of D. medinensis were administered to each of four raccons (Procyon lotor): infective 3rd-stage larvae of D. insignis were administered to a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta), two dogs, two ferrets (Mustela putorius furo), and a marten (Martes americana). D. medinensis was not found in the raccoons when necropsies were performed on days 247, 283, 354, and 390 post-infection, respec

Development of a cross-protective subunit cocktail vaccine against diverse serotypes of Glaesserella parasuis infection in pigs.

Glässer's disease, caused by Glaesserella parasuis (GPS), causes substantial economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. This situation is largely attributable to the poor cross-protective efficacy of currently available vaccines. In this study, a multi-antigen cocktail subunit vaccine against GPS infection was developed. In silico antigenicity analysis, the immunoprotective efficacy, and antibody titers of 14 GPS antigens were assessed in a murine model. Finally, VacJ, PtsG, and GAPDH were identified as the component of the cocktail vaccine, with Gel-01 as the optimal adjuvant. Immunizat
