Experimental pneumonia in red deer (Cervus elaphus L) produced by an ovine chlamydia.

An isolate of Chlamydia psittaci from ovine pneumonia produced extensive pneumonia in red deer after endobronchial inoculation. Associated clinical signs lasting for several days included pyrexia, inappetance, increased pulse and respiration rate, and physical distress after handling, but no coughing or upper respiratory symptoms. Histologically, an acute exudative reaction was present after two days, and an early proliferative response after seven days. Both the clinical and pathological responses were more marked than those usually associated with chlamydial pneumonia in other large animals …

Development of a low-dose fipronil deer feed: Bait-screening and range-finding to determine the optimal formulation to control blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) feeding on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

Lyme disease is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the U.S., and acaricidal feeds administered to white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have potential to disrupt blood feeding by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. Two studies were conducted with the aim of determining an ideal formulation to deliver oral acaricides to white-tailed deer and finding the lowest fipronil dose level to effectively control I. scapularis. During formulation screening, various commercial attractants (baits) were presented to deer in large paddocks under semi-field conditions and motion-sensitive cam…

Comparison of sterilisation methods for deer velvet antler extracts and their impact on anticancer activity.

Natural extracts tested for potential effects in human health are susceptible to contamination, particularly when samples are often obtained from outdoor environments. Deer velvet antler (DVA) extracts have broad anticancer effects. As sterile samples are required for effective experimentation in cell cultures, we evaluated the most common sterilisation methods to get rid of microbial contamination. We also investigated whether the sterilisation method affected the anti-cancer activity of the DVA extract on human tumour cells. Two antler sections (tip and base) were subjected to water-based ex…

Native earthworms and roe deer in temperate forests: Friends in the sun, foes in the shade.

Given increasing deer populations and rising canopy openness through tree mortality in European forests, understanding how these changes affect above-belowground communities and ecosystem functioning is becoming more important. Earthworms comprise the largest animal biomass in European forest soils and play a central role in decomposition, carbon and nutrient cycling, and soil formation. However, their responses to canopy openness and deer browsing have been studied almost exclusively in northern North America, where interactions involve white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mainly no…

High-elevation adaptation is associated with functional changes in the immune response of deer mice.

Host-pathogen interactions are an important factor shaping species' evolutionary trajectories and distribution in space. Because high elevations generally have fewer and less virulent pathogens, movement from low to high elevations may result in changes to immunological selection pressures. However, the extent to which changes in immune exposure have interacted with organismal adaptation to high elevations is not well characterized. We used North American deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to investigate whether adaptation to high elevations has modified immunity using a conventional immune ch…

A Case of Disorder of Sex Development in Red Deer (Cervus elaphus).

INTRODUCTION: Disorders of sex development (DSDs) are rare in free-ranging cervids and remain poorly documented. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a hunted red deer (Cervus elaphus) with well-developed antlers and male-typical morphology but female-like external genitalia, characterized by a hypertrophic clitoris/penile-like protrusion and absence of a scrotum. External genital tissues were available for histopathology, which revealed penile-type structures, including cavernous tissue and urethral-like epithelium. Genetic sex was assessed using PCR amplification of SRY and ZFX/ZFY markers from f…

Estimating the seroprevalence of Mycobacterium bovis infection in a wild deer population in southwest England.

BACKGROUND: In England, transmission of Mycobacterium bovis between cattle and certain species of free-roaming, wild deer has been implicated in some endemic bovine tuberculosis (bTB) regions. However, there are still data and knowledge gaps regarding the role of deer in the epidemiology of this disease. This paper presents the results of a serological survey to estimate the prevalence of M. bovis infection in a large wild deer population in the bTB high-risk area of southwest England. METHODS: Blood samples were collected postmortem over a 12-month period from wild deer shot during annual po…

The Breeding Season and Movement Ecology of Male White-Tailed Deer in Southwest Wisconsin.

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; hereafter, deer) have been widely studied regarding their breeding ecology and responses to hunting pressures. However, variations in defining the breeding season-its duration and timing-across studies have created uncertainty about whether regional differences in deer breeding ecology stem from ecological factors or methodological inconsistencies. This study aims to clarify the peak breeding season timing and the movement patterns of males during this period, particularly in relation to hunting seasons. Understanding how age and the timing of hunting…

Case report: Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the nasal cavity in a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).

Neuroendocrine tumors of the nasal cavity are rare in both animals and humans. This report describes the macroscopic, histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of a neuroendocrine tumor in a three-year-old female roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) that was shot due to a facial deformity caused by an oval, firm, exophytic lesion effacing the left frontal and parietal regions. Longitudinal sectioning of the skull revealed a nasal cavity tumor that had invaded the cribriform plate, the rostral bones of the skull, the rostral aspect of the cranial cavity and the frontal sinuses and ext…

Infectivity of gastrointestinal nematode parasites of sika deer (Cervus nippon) for calves and lambs.

Sika deer, mainly of Japanese origin, have been introduced into the British Isles and central Europe and established free-ranging populations, expanding in several countries. Introduction of the sika deer was associated with the transfer of Spiculopteragia houdemeri which has been reported for the first time in 2003 from Germany and thereafter from sika deer and other cervid species in some countries in Europe. Surveys of livestock parasites have shown that cervid-specific gastrointestinal nematodes of native deer occur in natural infections in cattle and sheep, usually at low level, and infec…

The role of deer keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae: Lipoptena and Neolipoptena) in occupational and public health.

Deer keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae: Lipoptena and Neolipoptena) are bloodsucking arthropods that primarily feed on deer (family Cervidae) but can occasionally bite humans. The knowledge of their potential harm to wildlife, livestock, and pets is fragmentary. These ectoparasites have been historically understudied, as they were only considered nuisances to various occupational groups and the public. However, there is also mounting evidence that they may be pathogen vectors as several infectious disease agents, including Acinetobacter, Anaplasma, Bartonella, Borrelia, Coxiella, Francisella, Mycop…

Identification of Factors Associated with Both Frequency and Severity of Deer-Related Motorcycle Crashes.

INTRODUCTION: Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to injury when encountering large animals such as deer in the roadway. The frequency of these events, factors associated with their occurrence, and the extent of injuries sustained from such crashes are not yet well described. METHODS: A review of 10 years (2012-2021) of statewide motorcycle crash reports from a single state with a large deer population was performed to ascertain the frequency of deer-associated motorcycle crashes. Environmental and roadway conditions, as well as motorcyclist age, gender, and helmet usage, were identifie…

DNA barcoding for the identification and authentication of medicinal deer (Cervus sp.) products in China.

Deer products from sika deer (Cervus nippon) and red deer (C. elaphus) are considered genuine and used for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) materials in China. Deer has a very high economic and ornamental value, resulting in the formation of a characteristic deer industry in the prescription preparation of traditional Chinese medicine, health food, cosmetics, and other areas of development and utilization. Due to the high demand for deer products, the products are expensive and have limited production, but the legal use of deer is limited to only two species of sika deer and red deer; other …

Metastatic Osteosarcoma of the Distal Femur in a Korean Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus).

The interleukin-17A (IL-17A) cytokine is a key driver in the pathogenesis of chronic immune-mediated diseases, including psoriasis (PsO), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). As a central proinflammatory mediator, IL-17A signals through the IL-17RA/RC receptor complex to promote tissue-specific inflammation. This narrative review outlines the therapeutic rationale for targeting IL-17A and summarizes the current evidence for vunakizumab, a novel humanized monoclonal antibody against IL-17A. We reviewed the biological basis of IL-17A signaling and its pathogenic role in Ps

Strain-mode-specific mechanical testing and the interpretation of bone adaptation in the deer calcaneus.

The artiodactyl (deer and sheep) calcaneus is a model that helps in understanding how many bones achieve anatomical optimization and functional adaptation. We consider how the dorsal and plantar cortices of these bones are optimized in quasi-isolation (the conventional view) versus in the context of load sharing along the calcaneal shaft by "tension members" (the plantar ligament and superficial digital flexor tendon). This load-sharing concept replaces the conventional view, as we have argued in a recent publication that employs an advanced analytical model of habitual loading and fracture ri…

Parainfluenza and corona viruses in a fallow deer (Dama dama) with fatal respiratory disease.

Parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV-3) and coronaviruses (CoV) are commonly found in respiratory tracts of ruminants and capable of causing clinical disease. Here, we investigated the cause of ill-thrift and sudden death in a five-month-old male fallow deer which occurred in December 2019. The calf was one of the five calves in a herd of 170 deer that, along with three adult hinds, died during a 2-week period. The deer calves were in a shed, sharing airspace with young cattle that had been reported to be coughing. Significant gross pathology was observed in the respiratory and alimentary tracts of…

Generalist nematodes dominate the nemabiome of roe deer in sympatry with sheep at a regional level.

The growth of livestock farming and the recent expansion of wild ungulate populations in Europe favor opportunities for direct and/or indirect cross-transmission of pathogens. Comparatively few studies have investigated the epidemiology of gastro-intestinal nematode parasites, an ubiquitous and important community of parasites of ungulates, at the wildlife/livestock interface. In this study, we aimed to assess the influence of livestock proximity on the gastrointestinal nematode community of roe deer in a rural landscape located in southern France. Using ITS-2 rDNA nemabiome metabarcoding on f…

The Role of the Cerebellum in Repetitive Behavior Across Species: Childhood Stereotypies and Deer Mice.

Recent studies suggest that the cerebellum may have a significant role in repetitive behaviors. In primary complex motor stereotypies, typically developing children have repetitive movements usually involving rhythmic flapping/waving arm/hand movements. Similarly, the deer mouse animal model exhibits inherited repetitive behaviors, with increased frequencies of spontaneous jumping and rearing. In this study, data from both children with motor stereotypies and deer mice were used to investigate the role of the cerebellum in repetitive behaviors. The 3.0-T MRI volumetric imaging of the cerebellu…

In vivo evaluation of deer antler trabecular bone as a reconstruction material for bone defects.

Availability of graft materials to fill up osseous defects has always been a concern in orthopaedic surgeries. Deer antler material is a primary bone structure that is easy to collect and could serve as a xenograft. This study examines the behaviour of red deer antler trabecular cylinders in critical size distal femoral epiphyseal defects in 11 rabbits, and evaluates the effect of the decellularization protocols. Two preparation regimes (A and B) were used, with and without lipids and proteins. Radiographs were taken immediately after surgery and after euthanasia 12 weeks post-implantation. Hi…

Lipoptena fortisetosa as a vector of Bartonella bacteria in Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon).

BACKGROUND: Two species of deer ked (Lipoptena cervi and L. mazamae) have been identified as vectors of Bartonella bacteria in cervids in Europe and the USA. In an earlier study we showed that Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) harbor three Bartonella species, namely B. capreoli (lineage A) and two novel Bartonella species (lineages B and C); however, there is currently no information on the vector of Bartonella bacteria in sika deer. The aim of this study was to clarify potential vectors of Bartonella in Japanese sika deer. METHODS: Thirty-eight wingless deer keds (L. fortisetosa) and 36 tic…
