Cortical phosphorylated α-Synuclein levels correlate with brain wave spectra in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative EEG features have been identified as surrogates and predictors of cognitive decline/dementia, a common feature of progressive PD. The biochemical correlates for altered quantitative EEG features are unknown. Our primary objective was to test the hypothesis that quantitative EEG measures correlate with cortical levels of phosphorylated α-synuclein, a modified form of the synaptic protein α-synuclein, in PD cases, in contrast to other pathology-associated proteins. A secondary objective was to explore the same correlations among cellular fractions of these proteins. M

[A patient with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis induced by breast cancer presenting with hypersomnia].

A 50-year-old woman developed gait disturbance and hypersomnia over a period of a month. General physical examination revealed axillary lymph node swelling. On neurological examinations she was fully orientated but hypersomnic; short term memory disturbance, horizontal gaze evoked nystagmus and ataxic gait were observed. Electroencephalography disclosed a tendency for easily decreasing vigilance with delta activities but normal dominant rhythm. Cerebrospinal fluid examinations showed increased protein amounts (109 mg/dl) without either pleocytosis or atypical cells. An echogram of the breasts

Correlation of severity of FDG-PET hypometabolism and interictal regional delta slowing in temporal lobe epilepsy.

PURPOSE: We investigated the association of severity of hypometabolism detected by positron emission tomography (PET) with [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and persistence of interictal EEG focal slowing in patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy. METHODS: Eighty temporal lobes of 40 consecutive patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (mean age, 43.5 years) were studied. All patients underwent video-EEG monitoring, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and FDG-PET. Patients with either normal MRI or with unilateral mesial temporal sclerosis, but no other structural abnormality, we

Is there paradoxical arousal reaction in the EEG subdelta range in patients during anesthesia?

Different anesthetic drugs can produce different electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns. Nondrug induced influences, such as surgical stimulation, may also alter the EEG in anesthetized patients. Increases of delta activity are interpreted as signs of deepening of anesthesia. These EEG patterns are sometimes also found in frontal leads after surgical stimulation during isoflurane anesthesia. However, to avoid incorrect anesthetic management under EEG monitoring, this phenomenon of "paradoxical arousal" must be taken into consideration. This study demonstrates that, after surgical stimulation,

Different neuronal networks are associated with spikes and slow activity in hypsarrhythmia.

PURPOSE: West syndrome is a severe epileptic encephalopathy of infancy characterized by a poor developmental outcome and hypsarrhythmia. The pathogenesis of hypsarrhythmia is insufficiently understood. METHODS: We investigated eight patients with infantile spasms and hypsarrhythmia (group I) and 8 children with complex partial seizures (group II) using simultaneous recordings of electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional MRI. Hemodynamic responses to epileptiform discharges and slow wave activity (EEG delta power) were analyzed separately. RESULTS: In group I (mean age, 7.82 +/- 2.87 months),

Growth hormone-releasing hormone: cerebral cortical sleep-related EEG actions and expression.

Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), its receptor (GHRHR), and other members of the somatotropic axis are involved in non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) regulation. Previously, studies established the involvement of hypothalamic GHRHergic mechanisms in NREMS regulation, but cerebral cortical GHRH mechanisms in sleep regulation remained uninvestigated. Here, we show that unilateral application of low doses of GHRH to the surface of the rat somatosensory cortex ipsilaterally decreased EEG delta wave power, while higher doses enhanced delta power. These actions of GHRH on EEG delta wave pow

The association between leukocyte telomere lengths and sleep instability based on cardiopulmonary coupling analysis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to examine the objective association between sleep stability and leukocyte telomere lengths (LTL) using cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC) analysis, which is an electrocardiogram (ECG)-based technique to quantify physiologic sleep stability. METHODS: Three hundred eighty-one healthy subjects were recruited from a community-based cohort study from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES), and the associations between LTL and total quantities of different frequency coupling bands were examined using generalized linear model (GLM) with adjustment of signi

Combined EEG-fMRI and tractography to visualise propagation of epileptic activity.

In a patient with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy, EEG-fMRI showed activation in association with left anterior temporal interictal discharges, in the left temporal, parietal and occipital lobes. Dynamic causal modelling suggested propagation of neural activity from the temporal focus to the area of occipital activation. Tractography showed connections from the site of temporal lobe activation to the site of occipital activation. This demonstrates the principle of combining EEG-fMRI and tractography to delineate the pathways of propagation of epileptic activity.

Identification and validation of five hypoxia- and immune-related hub targets in atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, with increasing incidence and prevalence. Hypoxia and immune response are closely related to the progression of AF. This study aims to explore hub hypoxia- and immune-related genes associated with AF. METHODS: Multiple AF datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus database were downloaded. Hypoxia- and immune-related genes associated with AF were identified by integrating differential expression analysis, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Functional enrichment

Validation of photoplethysmography-derived short-term heart rate variability using a wearable device.

Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects cardiac autonomic function and cardiovascular health. While electrocardiography (ECG) remains the gold standard for HRV assessment, photoplethysmography (PPG)-based wearables offer an alternative for monitoring. This study aimed to validate the wrist-worn PPG device Bora band® for short-term HRV assessment against standard ECG and to characterize domain-specific agreement patterns. In this prospective, single-center observational study, 66 participants in sinus rhythm underwent simultaneous high-resolution 12-lead ECG and wrist-based PPG recording for 5 mi

Neural entrainment to rhythmically presented auditory, visual, and audio-visual speech in children.

Auditory cortical oscillations have been proposed to play an important role in speech perception. It is suggested that the brain may take temporal "samples" of information from the speech stream at different rates, phase resetting ongoing oscillations so that they are aligned with similar frequency bands in the input ("phase locking"). Information from these frequency bands is then bound together for speech perception. To date, there are no explorations of neural phase locking and entrainment to speech input in children. However, it is clear from studies of language acquisition that infants us

Individual differences in resting alpha band power and changes in theta band power during sustained pain are correlated with the pain-relieving efficacy of alpha HD-tACS on SM1.

High-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) targeting alpha rhythms (8-13 Hz) shows promise as a pain-relieving intervention, but individual responses vary widely. Understanding the neurobiological mechanism behind this variability is crucial for optimizing HD-tACS parameters to enhance its efficacy in pain relief. In a double-blind, within-subject, sham-controlled experimental study, 34 healthy participants were recruited. We investigated how individual differences in brain oscillations during rest and capsaicin-induced sustained pain states influence the efficacy o

Ventricular fibrillation during football training as a consequence of kratom and caffeine use in an adolescent: case report.

BACKGROUND: There is an increase in the sale of legal drugs in our country. One of these substances is kratom. Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a partial agonist of the opioid kappa, mu, and delta receptors. It acts as a stimulant at low concentrations, making users feel more energetic and euphoric. It has sedative and antinociceptive effects at higher doses. CASE SUMMARY: An 18-year-old man collapsed during football training and required cardiopulmonary resuscitation; the initial rhythm was ventricular fibrillation managed by defibrillation. Laboratory parameters were unremarkable. Blood sampl

Serotonergic mechanisms of trigeminal meningeal nociception: Implications for migraine pain.

Serotonergic mechanisms play a central role in migraine pathology. However, the region-specific effects of serotonin (5-HT) mediated via multiple types of receptors in the nociceptive system are poorly understood. Using extracellular and patch-clamp recordings, we studied the action of 5-HT on the excitability of peripheral and central terminals of trigeminal afferents. 5-HT evoked long-lasting TTX-sensitive firing in the peripheral terminals of meningeal afferents, the origin site of migraine pain. Cluster analysis revealed that in majority of nociceptive fibers 5-HT induced either transient

Role of the tricuspid annulus and the eustachian valve/ridge on atrial flutter. Relevance to catheter ablation of the septal isthmus and a new technique for rapid identification of ablation success.

BACKGROUND: Typical atrial flutter (AFL) results from right atrial reentry by propagation through an isthmus between the inferior vena cava (IVC) and tricuspid annulus (TA). We postulated that the eustachian valve and ridge (EVR) forms a line of conduction block between the IVC and coronary sinus (CS) ostium and forms a second isthmus (septal isthmus) between the TA and CS ostium. METHODS AND RESULTS: Endocardial mapping in 30 patients with AFL demonstrated atrial activation around the TA in the counter-clockwise direction (left anterior oblique projection). Double atrial potentials were reco

Ascorbate insufficiency disrupts glutamatergic signaling and alters electroencephalogram phenotypes in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Clinical studies have reported that increased epileptiform and subclinical epileptiform activity can be detected in many patients with an Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis using electroencephalogram (EEG) and this may correlate with poorer cognition. Ascorbate may have a specific role as a neuromodulator in AD as it is released concomitantly with glutamate reuptake following excitatory neurotransmission. Insufficiency may therefore result in an exacerbated excitatory/inhibitory imbalance in neuronal signaling. Using a mouse model of AD that requires dietary ascorbate (Gulo-/-APPswe/PSEN1dE9),
