A rare case of synovial otorrhea of iatrogenic nature in dentistry.

The authors describe a unique case of left synovial otorrhea in a masticatory phase, occurring in a 64-year-old patient after a long dental sitting. The otoscopic examination and the transverse CT of the ear revealed the fracture of the anterior wall of left external auditory canal and the presence of a small bone fragment on the external side of the glenoid fossa. This situation, at present, has been judged inoperable by otologists due to the close relationship between this area and the head of the left condyle, probably responsible for the fracture. The therapy used was based on the use of a

Risk factors and management of dehiscent wounds in implant dentistry.

Successful implant dentistry is based on adequate training, proper selection of patients, careful surgery, preplanned restorations, and postoperative and supportive care. Although implant therapy is highly successful and predictable, it is not without possible early and/or late complications. The aim of this article is to highlight the importance of a relatively neglected subject of dehiscent wounds in the dental implant literature. This article covers the definitions of wound healing and wound dehiscence and some of the common risk factors related to suture line opening as an immediate postop…

A review of commonly prescribed oral antibiotics in general dentistry.

The microflora associated with odontogenic infections are typically mixed and of indigenous origin. Streptococcus, peptostreptococcus, pepto … s potential gastrointestinal toxicity relegates it to third- or even fourth-line therapy in general dentistry. Although metronidazole displays excellent activity against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli, it is only moderately effective against facultative and anaerobic gram-positive cocci, and should not be used alone in the treatment of acute odontogenic in …

The Wilfred Fish memorial lecture. The Hunterian tradition in dentistry.

The influence of William and John Hunter upon the development of Medicine and Dentistry in Britain has endured for more than two centuries. John Hunter's first book set out the morphological details of the teeth and their associated structures. From this basis he sought to attain an understanding of physiological and pathological processes by studies of the entire animal kingdom and by experimentation. His foundations of scientific dentistry were built upon by John Tomes and Wilfred Fish in subsequent centuries, both invoking the use of microscopy to enhance Hunter's naked eye descriptions and…

[The role of x-ray films in diagnosis in operative dentistry].

In operative dentistry x-ray films play an important part as a diagnostic procedure. Image quality depends on factors such as exposure and projection but also on optimum processing of the x-ray film. Of particular importance among the exposure-related factors are such features as variable voltage, short exposure time and narrow focussing. According to the new regulations in Germany x-rays may be used if this is indicated for medical reasons in dentistry. This condition is given far more frequently than x-rays are performed in the dental office. In the diagnosis of caries individual bitewing ra…

Oral scopolamine hydrobromide solution as an antisialagogic agent in dentistry.

Antisialagogue, cardiac, and subjective effects of oral scopolamine hydrobromide solution (ScHBr), 0.02 mg/kg total body weight, were studied in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled manner with ten healthy volunteers. ScHBr was rinsed in the mouth for 5 minutes before swallowing. ScHBr reduced nonstimulated and paraffin-stimulated salivation at 40 minutes by 52% and 62%, and at 60 minutes by 81% to 80%, respectively. The heart rate decreased significantly (p less than 0.01) when compared with placebo. With the same drug dosing method, the effects of ScHBr also were tested in clinical

Evaluation and management of hypersensitivity to local anesthetics in pediatric dentistry.

The clinical histories of four children with a history of adverse reactions to local anesthesia and who required dental treatment are reviewed retrospectively. The children described had been referred to the allergy unit for evaluation between 1984 and 1985 and are representative of the dilemma of cases of suspected hypersensitivity to local anesthetics. The first two cases had been previously treated without the use of regional anesthesia because of a family history of atopic reactions as well as equivocal skin testing to local anesthetic. The third child had experienced bizarre adverse react

Applications of Nanomaterials in Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics: A Narrative Review.

Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising strategy in restorative dentistry and endodontics due to the physicochemical and biological properties of nanomaterials. This narrative review aimed to critically analyze the current applications of nanomaterials in restorative dentistry and endodontics, highlighting their mechanisms of action, biological properties, and translational potential. A literature search was performed in the PubMed/MEDLINE database using combinations of MeSH terms and free keywords related to nanomaterials and dental applications. Studies published in English within the last…

Role of Artificial Intelligence in Pediatric Dentistry: An Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied in pediatric dentistry for caries detection, risk prediction, anomaly identification, and treatment planning. However, the quality, consistency, and overlap of evidence from existing systematic reviews have not been comprehensively evaluated. AIM: To synthesize evidence from systematic reviews on AI in pediatric dentistry, focusing on diagnostic performance, methodological quality, and overlap of primary studies. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched up to 31 August 2025. Methodol…

Bloodborne Pathogens in Dentistry: What Is New, What Is Emerging?

Bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) are transmitted from an infected source to a healthy recipient through blood or blood-contaminated media, either percutaneously or transmucosally. Approximately 30 BBPs have been cited in the literature. Pathogens of the highest concern, such as human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, among others, pose a significant risk of transmission in dental practices. High global trend of occupational injuries, superimposed with underreporting of exposures, underscores the need for advancement in the prevention, along with robust education in the dental sc

Challenges and prospects for popularizing cell therapy in the dentistry in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative medicine is actively used in dentistry in Japan and mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapy shows promising potential. Despite the growing interest and some clinical and private practice applications, the adoption of MSC-based therapies remains limited. In this study, we report the current status of cell therapy in dentistry in Japan and discuss the challenges in popularizing cell therapy and the future direction of dental regenerative medicine. HIGHLIGHTS: As of May 2025, MSCs were being used for oral tissue regeneration in clinical research and private practice. Dent…
