[Ectodermal dysplasia with alopecia, a higher rate of chromosome breaks and normal dentition].

The authors present in two case-histories of unrelated female patients the characteristics of the syndrome of ectodermal dysplasia with alopecia and absence of hair and concurrent immunodeficiency and a higher number of chromosomal breaks. In the probands some other important symptoms of ectodermal dysplasias were lacking, such as disorders of dentition and absence of sweat glands. In this affection, hitherto not mentioned in our literature in conjunction with an increased number of chromosomal breaks, the author draws attention to genetic and prenatal genetic associations. He assumes an autos…

Apical migration of the junctional epithelium in the human primary dentition as a multifactorial phenomenon.

Apical migration of the gingival junctional epithelium and/or attachment loss in the human primary dentition have been reported in the literature. The findings of several histological, in vitro and radiographic studies are summarized and related to the etiology of this phenomenon. An hypothesis that apical migration of the junctional epithelium, in the human primary dentition, is the result of a combination of the qualitative characteristics of the inflammatory cell infiltrate, passive eruption and the shedding process is presented.

Bone grafting at the stage of mixed dentition in cleft lip and palate patients.

Our results of bone grafting to the alveolar process during the mixed dentition were investigated in 55 consecutively treated patients (66 clefts). The amount of remaining bone and gingival retraction at the tooth mesial to the cleft after 3 and 12 months was measured and correlated with the following anatomical conditions present during surgery: width of the cleft, rotation of the adjacent incisor, stage of eruption of the tooth distal to the cleft. It was also considered if any deciduous lateral incisor or canine was extracted during surgery and if any flap dehiscence took place postoperativ…

[Pre-orthodontic surgical treatment of retained or ectopic teeth in juvenile dentitions].

For orthodontic and gnathologic reasons, impacted teeth in adolescents should not be extracted but rather placed in their appropriate positions. This article deals with the surgical aspects of a combined surgical and orthodontic methods for incorporating these teeth into the dental arch. The procedure for lifting the gingival tissue to expose the impacted tooth and the application of a plastic attachment via "direct bonding" were described.

[Biodevelopmental and biostatistical aspects of the concept of normal values in the 1st and 2d dentition].

In conformity with the practice in other biological sciences, it is suggested to adopt in dentition chronology the double of the range around the mean as the range of normal. The great variance especially in the second dentition agrees with the variance of other developmental characteristics and must be considered to be typical of human development. The integration of dentition with the complex of the characteristics of physical and psychical development is advocated.

Breastfeeding and interdental spacing in primary dentition: a digital cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Interdental spacing in the primary dentition is a key physiological feature that facilitates proper eruption and alignment of permanent teeth. While genetic factors play a central role, environmental influences such as early feeding practices may also affect jaw development and spacing, although quantitative evidence is limited. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between early feeding practices-including breastfeeding, formula feeding, bottle and pacifier use, and timing of complementary feeding-and interdental spacing in the primary dentition. METHODS: A descriptive cross-se…

Supragingival plaque microbiota and caries risk factors among children with mixed dentition.

BACKGROUND: Dental plaque accumulation plays a key role in caries development. This study explored the relationships between dental caries experience, the bacterial composition of dental plaque, and oral health behaviors in children with mixed dentition and fair-to-good oral hygiene, as assessed by the Silness and Löe Plaque Index (PlI). METHODS: This study included 54 children (6-12 years, mean ± SD = 8 ± 2) from Greater Poland Province. The participants' parents completed a questionnaire on diet, oral hygiene, and dental care. Two calibrated pediatric dentists performed the dental examinati…

Automatic recognition of oral health status in mixed dentition via intraoral photography.

BACKGROUND: Children in the mixed dentition stage are susceptible to dental caries, necessitating frequent examination and preventive measures. In this study, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were used to develop a model for detecting oral health status in mixed dentition. METHODS: Intraoral images of dentition spanning 2467 occlusal surfaces were collected from 7–9-year-old children for training and testing. The health status of all teeth, including caries, fillings, intraoral devices, pigments, and black stains, was tested. For the first permanent molar, indicator testing was conducted t…

Deep learning segmentation of mandible with lower dentition from cone beam CT.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to train a 3D U-Net convolutional neural network (CNN) for mandible and lower dentition segmentation from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. METHODS: In an ambispective cross-sectional design, CBCT scans from two hospitals (2009-2019 and 2021-2022) constituted an internal dataset and external validation set, respectively. Manual segmentation informed CNN training, and evaluations employed Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) for volumetric accuracy. A blinded oral maxillofacial surgeon performed qualitative grading of CBCT scans and object meshes. Statistica…

Pulmonary Actinomycosis in a 65-Year-Old Female with Poor Oral Dentition.

Pulmonary actinomycosis is an uncommon clinical entity that can be challenging to diagnose due to its non-specific symptomatology. Misdiagnosis and delayed treatment may result in invasive procedures and extended antimicrobial treatment courses. We report a case involving a 65-year-old female with poor oral dentition admitted for acute respiratory failure subsequently found to have a left-sided pleural effusion and perihepatic abscess formation. Cytopathology examination and microbiology studies confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis.
