Placental corticotrophin-releasing hormone trajectories in pregnancy: Associations with postpartum depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Depressive symptoms following birth are common and can have adverse effects for mothers, children, and families. Changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation during pregnancy may be implicated in the development of postpartum depressive symptoms, particularly changes in placental corticotropinreleasing hormone (pCRH). However, few studies have tested how dynamic pCRH changes over pregnancy relate to postpartum depressive symptoms. This preregistered investigation tests associations of both pCRH levels and changes from early to late pregnancy with postpartum depres

Postpartum depression: aetiology, pathogenesis and the role of nutrients and dietary supplements in prevention and management.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a challenging psychological disorder faced by 10-30% of mothers across the globe. In India, it occurs among 22% of mothers. Its aetiology and pathophysiology aren't fully understood as of today but multiple theories on the interplay of hormones, neurotransmitters, genetics, epigenetics, nutrients, socio-environmental factors, etc. exist. Nutrients are not only essential for the synthesis of neurotransmitters, but they may also indirectly influence genomic pathways that methylate DNA, and there is evidence for molecular associations between nutritional quality and

Symptoms of Depression in the Postpartum Period: Targeting Maternal Mental Health in the Perinatal Period.

This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationship between postpartum depression symptoms, anxiety, and stress during the postpartum period. A total of 101 women were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) within 14 days after delivery. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that paid work, tobacco use, and stress symptoms were significantly associated with a higher incidence of postpartum depression symptoms. These results underscore the importance of comprehensive prenatal care and effective postpartu

Catatonic postpartum paternal depression as a first debut of a bipolar disorder: a case report.

Paternal postpartum depression (PD) is considered an affective disorder that affects fathers during the months following childbirth. Interestingly, it has been observed that during these months the chances of a male parent suffering from depression are double that for a non-parent male counterpart. We present the case of a 34-year-old man with no relevant medical history in who, overlapping her daughter's birth, several depressive symptoms emerged, such as fatigue, lack of concentration, sleeping disturbances and abandonment of care of the newborn. Prior to consultation, patient refused to eat

Impact of some social and clinical factors on the development of postpartum depression in Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is prevalent and may present major adverse impacts on mother and child health. According to previous studies, mostly from the western society, PPD may have complicated etiologies, such as genetic, social and psychological factors. The aim of this study was to explore the associations of some social and clinical factors, particularly those unique in Chinese, with significant PPD symptoms. METHODS: A sample of 556 pregnant women in their 36th to 40th gestational week were randomly recruited in a cross-sectional study using a self-reported questionnaire, w

Screening mixed depression and bipolarity in the postpartum period at a primary health care center.

INTRODUCTION: Mixed depression is a clinical condition accompanied by the symptoms of (hypo)mania and is considered to be a predictor for bipolar disorder. Compared to pure major depression, mixed depression is worse in progress. There are limited data on the prevalence of mixed depression since it is a relatively new entity. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of mixed depression during the postpartum period which is risky for mood disorders. METHODS: The study included 63 postpartum women. The participants were administered Beck Depression Scale, Edinburgh Postn

History of postpartum depression in a clinic-based sample of women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Overlapping comorbidities between premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and postpartum depression (PPD) suggest that these disorders represent a continuum of vulnerability with shared pathophysiology. We report the past histories of PPD (and other Axis I psychiatric illnesses) in a clinic-based sample of women meeting criteria for PMDD. METHODS: 215 women, ages 19 to 51 years, who attended the National Institute of Mental Health Mood Disorders Clinic between 1988 and 2013 seeking treatment for PMDD and in whom we confirmed the diagnosis of PMDD (DSM-IV), were identified. MID-PREGNANCY CORTICOTROPIN-RELEASING HORMONE LEVELS IN ASSOCIATION WITH POSTPARTUM DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS.

BACKGROUND: Peripartum depression is a common cause of pregnancy- and postpartum-related morbidity. The production of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) from the placenta alters the profile of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis hormones and may be associated with postpartum depression. The purpose of this study was to assess, in nondepressed pregnant women, the possible association between CRH levels in pregnancy and depressive symptoms postpartum. METHODS: A questionnaire containing demographic data and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was filled in gestational weeks 17 an

Rates and risk factors associated with depressive symptoms during pregnancy and with postpartum onset.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of depressive symptoms in the third trimester of pregnancy and at 3 months postpartum and to prospectively identify risk factors associated with elevated depressive symptoms during pregnancy and with postpartum onset. About 364 women attending antenatal clinics or at the time of their ultrasound were recruited and completed questionnaires in pregnancy and 226 returned their questionnaires at 3 months postpartum. Depressed mood was assessed by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS; score of ≥ 10). The rate of depressed mood d

Mediators of the association of major depressive syndrome and anxiety syndrome with postpartum smoking relapse.

OBJECTIVE: Based on conceptual models of addiction and affect regulation, this study examined the mechanisms linking current major depressive syndrome (MDS) and anxiety syndrome (AS) to postpartum smoking relapse. METHOD: Data were collected in a randomized clinical trial from 251 women who quit smoking during pregnancy. Simple and multiple mediation models of the relations of MDS and AS with postpartum relapse were examined using linear regression, continuation ratio logit models, and a bootstrapping procedure to test the indirect effects. RESULTS: Both MDS and AS significantly predicted po

Impact of a health promotion intervention on maternal depressive symptoms at 15 months postpartum.

Given that diet, physical activity, and social support are associated with depression, we examined whether a health promotion intervention designed to modify these factors in low-income, postpartum women would reduce depressive symptoms. This study used a randomized, controlled design to examine the effect of the Just for You (JFY) Program, an educational intervention promoting healthy lifestyles through home visits by nutrition paraprofessionals and motivational telephone counseling, on postpartum depressive symptoms. A total of 679 women income-eligible for the Special Supplemental Nutrition

Prenatal beta-endorphin as an early predictor of postpartum depressive symptoms in euthymic women.

BACKGROUND: After delivery, many women experience symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD), and early identification of women at risk is therefore important. The opioid peptide beta-endorphin has been implicated in non-puerperal depression but its role in the development of PPD is unknown. METHODS: Three hundred and seven women with a singleton, full-term (>37.0 weeks' GA) pregnancy were recruited early in pregnancy and followed up into the postpartum period. Blood samples were obtained at 15, 19, 25, 31 and 37 weeks' gestational age (GA) and at 9 weeks postpartum for assessment of beta-endorp

Antenatal reports of pre-pregnancy abuse is associated with symptoms of depression in the postpartum period.

The purpose of this study is to estimate characteristics predictive of postpartum mood change symptoms among urban women. Women receiving prenatal care at The Mount Sinai Hospital OB/GYN Diagnostic and Treatment Center and who delivered over one calendar year (2007; n = 884) were evaluated for psychosocial risk factors at their first prenatal visit and then subsequently for postpartum mood symptomatology (n = 510) at 6 weeks postpartum. Symptoms associated with postpartum depression (PPD) were best predicted by a pre-pregnancy history of physical or sexual abuse, a history of psychiatric probl
