Prevalence of equine Piroplasmosis and its association with tick infestation in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Serum samples were collected from 582 horses from 40 stud farms in the State of São Paulo and tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infestations were evaluated on them. Serum samples were subjected to the complement fixation test (CFT) and a competitive inhibition ELISA (cELISA) for Babesia caballi and Theileria equi. Logistic regression analyses were performed to construct multivariate models that could explain the dependent variable (horses positive for B. caballi or T. equi) as a function of the independent variables (presence or abundance of each one of the tick species found on the farms). A higher over

Ticks, tick-borne rickettsiae, and Coxiella burnetii in the Greek Island of Cephalonia.

Domestic animals are the hosts of several tick species and the reservoirs of some tick-borne pathogens; hence, they play an important role in the circulation of these arthropods and their pathogens in nature. They may act as vectors, but, also, as reservoirs of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae, which are the causative agents of SFG rickettsioses. Q fever is a worldwide zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii), which can be isolated from ticks. A total of 1,848 ticks (954 female, 853 male, and 41 nymph) were collected from dogs, goats, sheep, cattle, and horses in 32 different lo

Rickettsia in Texas.

Since the first reported case in 1941, Rocky Mountain spotted fever in humans has been reported from many areas of Texas, with two major foci, one located in the north-central region and the other in the eastern region of the state. During the period 1979-1988, 421 cases of RMSF were reported, reaching 108 cases in 1983 and declining in subsequent years. Statewide surveillance programs to detect spotted fever group rickettsiae in tick populations were initiated in 1976. In recent years, the SFG infectivity rates in these tick species have included Dermacentor variabilis, 5.2%; Amblyomma americ

Variety of Bacterial Pathogens in Ticks Removed from Humans, Northeastern China.

Ticks transmit diverse pathogens, posing significant public health threats in northeastern China; clarifying human-biting tick species and their carried pathogens is crucial for risk assessment and prevention. This study was designed as a pathogen detection and molecular epidemiological investigation. During the May-August period of each of 2023 and 2024, 232 ticks that had bitten humans were collected from a local sentinel hospital. Ticks were morphologically identified, followed by DNA extraction, semi-nested/nested PCR targeting specific genetic markers, and Sanger sequencing to detect bact

Tick-borne infections in wolves from an expanding population in Eastern Europe.

In Central and Eastern Europe, wolf populations have been increasing over the last two decades, recolonizing areas from which the species had been previously exterminated. As wolves are still recovering after years of persecution by humans, recognizing pathogens infecting this species, including tick-borne infections, is crucial for its conservation. On the other hand the high mobility of wolves and their frequent contacts with humans, dogs, and other domestic species make them a potentially important zoonotic reservoir. In this paper, we used molecular methods to determine the prevalence of t

Likely Geographic Distributional Shifts among Medically Important Tick Species and Tick-Associated Diseases under Climate Change in North America: A Review.

Ticks rank high among arthropod vectors in terms of numbers of infectious agents that they transmit to humans, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, human monocytic ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and human granulocytic anaplasmosis. Increasing temperature is suspected to affect tick biting rates and pathogen developmental rates, thereby potentially increasing risk for disease incidence. Tick distributions respond to climate change, but how their geographic ranges will shift in future decades and how those shifts may translate into changes in disease incidence rem

The Prevalence of Different Human Pathogenic Microorganisms Transmitted by Ixodes Tick Vectors in Belarus.

Pathogens transmitted by ticks cause several important diseases in humans, including Lyme disease, the incidence of which has been increasing in Belarus. Between April and October 2017, a total of 504 questing Ixodid ticks (77% Ixodes ricinus and 23% Dermacentor reticulatus) were collected from six regions and city of Minsk, in Belarus. All ticks were analyzed by RT-PCR amplification for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), Anaplasma phagocytophillum, Ehrlihia muris, and Borrelia miyamotoi. B. burgdorferi s.l. and Rickettsia spp. were the most

Q fever (Coxiella burnetii) among man and farm animals in North Sinai, Egypt.

Antibodies against Coxiella burnetii were estimated among sheep, goats and camels (190), their owners (150 patients with pyrexia of unknown origin) and 30 normal individuals in North Sinai over the 2006 by indirect immounofluorescence assay. Nested polymerase chain reaction was used to detect Com-1 gene (genetic target of C. burnetii) encoding a 27-kDa outer membrane protein in the samples. C. burnetii IFA antibodies (IgM & IgG) in patients were 8 (5.3%) and a healthy control (3.3%). The overall was 9 of 180 (5.0%). C. burnetii IgM were detected in 3/150 (2%) patients with positive genome, whi

Parasitic and phoretic arthropods of sylvatic and commensal white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) in central Tennessee, with notes on Lyme disease.

Sixteen species of parasitic or phoretic arthropods were collected from 56 white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus, live-trapped in central Tennessee from April through November 1987. Arthropod infestation was compared for mice taken from sylvatic (woodland) versus commensal (household) habitats. Three species were recorded from hosts in both habitats: the sucking louse Hoplopleura hesperomydis, the flea Epitedia wenmanni, and the laelapid mite Androlaelaps casalis. Twelve of the 13 remaining arthropod species were taken only from mice trapped in woodland whereas the phoretic glycyphagid mite G

Ectoparasitic prevention compliance in dogs based on prescription records from veterinary practices in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Fleas and ticks are common and harmful ectoparasites in dogs. They feed on blood, cause irritation, and transmit various pathogens. In Poland, the primary species Ctenocephalides felis (fleas), Ixodes ricinus, and Dermacentor reticulatus (ticks) pose a year-round threat. Veterinary organizations recommend continuous year-round protection against ectoparasites. However, actual owner compliance with this recommendation remains unknown. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed medical records from 2021 to 2023 across 45 veterinary practices in Poland. A total of 44,140 ectoparasiti

A call for renewed research on tick-borne Francisella tularensis in the Arkansas-Missouri primary national focus of tularemia in humans.

Arkansas-Missouri has emerged as the primary U.S. focus of tularemia, which is caused by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Category A Priority Pathogen Francisella tularensis, over the past 30 yr. There are several pieces of indirect evidence suggesting that a key role of ticks in the transmission of F. tularensis to humans in Arkansas-Missouri is the primary reason why tularemia has remained a prominent disease of humans in this two-state area while fading away from other central or eastern states after a general decline in rabbit-associated tularemia cases. The primar

Identification of public submitted tick images: A neural network approach.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases represent a growing public health threat in North America and Europe. The number of ticks, their geographical distribution, and the incidence of tick-borne diseases, like Lyme disease, are all on the rise. Accurate, real-time tick-image identification through a smartphone app or similar platform could help mitigate this threat by informing users of the risks associated with encountered ticks and by providing researchers and public health agencies with additional data on tick activity and geographic range. Here we outline the requirements for such a system, present

Assessment of polymicrobial infections in ticks in New York state.

Ixodes scapularis ticks are clinically important hematophagous vectors. A single tick bite can lead to a polymicrobial infection. We determined the prevalence of polymicrobial infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia microti, Borrelia miyamotoi, and Powassan virus in 286 adult ticks from the two counties in New York State where Lyme disease is endemic, utilizing a MassTag multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay. Seventy-one percent of the ticks harbored at least one organism; 30% had a polymicrobial infection. Infections with three microbes were detected in 5%

Comparative Analysis of Bacterial Tick-Borne Pathogens in Questing Ticks from Sambia Peninsula, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia: Spring and Autumn Prevalence and Public Health Risks.

The Kaliningrad Oblast, located in the westernmost part of Russia and bordering European Union countries, is a popular tourist destination. However, limited research has been conducted on the bacteria found in ticks in this region. We, therefore, investigated the prevalence of certain bacteria, including Borrelia, Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia, as well as the genospecies of the spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) in Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus tick species. To accomplish this, we employed commercial qPCR for pathogen screening. We identified specific genospecies by sequ

Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction System for Alongshan Virus Detection.

The recently discovered Jingmenvirus group includes viruses with a segmented genome, RNA of a positive polarity, and several proteins with distant homology to the proteins of the members of the genus Orthoflavivirus. Some Jingmenvirus group members, namely the Alongshan virus (ALSV) and Jingmen tick virus, are reported to be tick-borne human pathogens that can cause a wide variety of symptoms. The ALSV is widely distributed in Eurasia, yet no reliable assay that can detect it exists. We describe a qPCR system for ALSV detection. Our data showed that this system can detect as little as 104 copi

Immature Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) Collected From Peromyscus leucopus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) and Peromyscus maniculatus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) Nests in Northern Wisconsin.

The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, is the primary Lyme disease vector in the eastern United States. Both immature stages of I. scapularis take blood meals from mice belonging to the genus Peromyscus. Mice are active during the night and spend the majority of diel periods in nests. Thus, immature I. scapularis have a greater opportunity to drop from Peromyscus hosts while in nests compared with the forest floor. Here, we collected 11 Peromyscus nests during a 3-mo period during which the immature I. scapularis are known to be active. We then examined nesting materials for the presence
