Canine atopic dermatitis is a common disease and is considered as an animal model of the human disease. Immunomodulation by helminths is reported in several species. The aim of this study was to determine whether nematodes have an immunomodulatory effect on atopic dermatitis in dogs. In the pilot study, 12 atopic dogs were infected with either embryonated eggs of Trichuris vulpis (500 and 2500 eggs in 3 dogs each) or L3 larvae of Uncinaria stenocephala (100, 500 and 2500 eggs in 2 dogs each), respectively, for 3 months. Pruritus was evaluated with visual analogue scales and clinical lesions wi

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common pregnancy dermatosis. This evidence-based review article provides an evaluation of AD in gestation. Our literature search revealed 4 epidemiologic studies on AD in pregnancy, and a total of 55 articles that provide the basis for this review. The limitations of epidemiologic studies included herein are critically reviewed. The management of AD in gestation is reviewed with an emphasis on drug safety. Further studies are required to determine whether it is the intrinsic ("nonallergic" or "atopiform dermatitis") and/or extrinsic (IgE-associated) AD that i

Within the past years, health services research projects have analyzed critically the management of atopic eczema (AE) in routine care, quantified the utility of controlling severe AE, and introduced an international standardization of core outcome measures for AE. With a prevalence of 16%, AE is the most frequent chronic condition at all among children and adolescents seeking medical care. Despite lower prevalence in adults, about 60% of patients with AE in routine care are adults. There is a clinically relevant comorbidity of AE and psychiatric conditions. Independent of patient's age and ph

Atopic dermatitis is a common entity encountered in clinical practice. A subgroup within the atopic dermatitis cohort may develop viral infection on skin lesions appearing as a vesiculopapular pattern. This process is termed eczema herpeticum and may pose a challenge to the clinician as it can appear similar to orthopoxvirus infections, most notably smallpox and monkeypox. Because these conditions are considered as potential bioterrorism threats, confirmatory testing via histological examination, viral culture, immunohistochemical staining or PCR is recommended. Additionally, antiviral therapy

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common skin disease. Long-standing, severe AD with repeated scratching and rubbing of the face, which requires continuous dermatologic care, predisposes the patient to various ocular complications. The knowledge of the frequency and significance of these ocular complications may allow their early diagnosis and treatment. The present study assesses the ocular complications in Indian children suffering from AD.
METHODS: In order to study the ocular complications in AD, 100 patients (61 male and 39 female) between the ages of 1 and 14 years were r

OBJECTIVE: To measure the impact of atopic dermatitis (AD) on the quality of life of pediatric patients and their families, establishing correlations with scores of disease severity.
METHODS: This was an observational study of the correlations between clinical indicators of severity and two questionnaires on quality of life: IDQOL and DFI. The study also included scoring of eczema severity EASI. Forty-two children with AD, fulfilling established diagnostic criteria, and 44 children with other dermatologic diseases were investigated for the effect of eczema on quality of life. Upon ingestion, the artificial sweetener, aspartame is metabolized to formaldehyde in the body and has been reportedly associated with systemic contact dermatitis in patients exquisitely sensitive to formaldehyde. We present a case of a 9-year-old Caucasian boy with a history of mild atopic dermatitis that experienced severe systematized dermatitis after being started on montelukast chewable tablets containing aspartame. Patch testing revealed multiple chemical sensitivities which included a positive reaction to formaldehyde. Notably, resolution of his systemic dermatitis only occurred with di

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of genetic and various environmental factors for atopic dermatitis (AD) occurring in the first 18 months of life.
METHODS: We used the multistage stratified systematic sampling to recruit 2,048 mother-child pairs from the Taiwan National Birth Registry in 2003. Information on family history of atopy and environmental risk factors for AD of children were gathered by questionnaires at 18 months of age. Multiple logistic regressions were performed to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk fa

Medical records of 600 dogs diagnosed with atopic dermatitis were reviewed and evaluated with reference to history, geographical distribution, breed predilection, clinical signs and positive reactions to allergens as determined by intradermal skin testing (IDT) manufactured by Artuvetrin Laboratories. In 66.6% of dogs, the age of onset of atopic dermatitis was between 4 months and 3 years. Dogs living in the garden suburb of Budapest were more sensitive to house dust mites, fleas and moulds, and dogs from the western part of Hungary were more sensitive to weeds than to other allergens (p < 0.0

Subjective/objective symptoms (itching, papula, erythema, lichenification, desquamation, scratching, erosion) and the levels of IgE, LDH, interleukin (IL) -6, thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) were compared before and after administering olopatadine hydrochloride (ALLELOCK tablets) to 17 atopic dermatitis (AD) patients. Subject/objective symptoms improved significantly after administering the agent, and the total dosage of the combined topical steroids was also significantly decreased after administration (p<0.05), although IgE, IL-6 and LDH levels did not change, TARC was signi

For more than five decades, topical corticosteroids and emollients have been the mainstay of therapy for atopic dermatitis. However, the potential for side-effects limits the clinical utility of corticosteroids in providing long-term disease control. With a unique mode of action that differs from that of corticosteroids, the steroid-free topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs), tacrolimus ointment and pimecrolimus cream, provide skin-selective treatment that targets key factors involved in the pathogenesis of this chronic disease. An extensive series of clinical trials involving more than 16,000

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common skin disease in Thai children. There is no clinical or laboratory gold standard for the diagnosis. It is generally based on the guideline proposed by Hanifin and Rajka. Many studies have shown that some criteria are probably not all that significant in making the diagnosis. This study was designed to evaluate the frequency and diagnostic significance of clinical features of AD in Thai children. The authors studied 108 patients with AD and 103 controls including patients with other skin diseases. The AD group consisted of 60 girls and 48 boys. The mean age was

In some 80% of patients with atopic dermatitis, the presence of specific IgE is found when facing food or environmental allergens. It has also been demonstrated in a sub-group of patients with atopic dermatitis that the dermatitis lesions are exacerbated following the ingestion or inhalation of allergens, and that they improve with reduction of exposure to allergens. Although the prick method and the determination of specific IgE in serum are highly sensitive techniques, epicutaneous tests, applying the allergen directly to the skin, might be the ideal diagnostic method since they reproduce th

Atopic dermatitis is often complicated by allergic contact dermatitis, although patch testing may reveal positive reactions of uncertain relevance. We report a case of a 35-year-old woman with recalcitrant atopic dermatitis, with a positive patch-test reaction to Compositae mix (CM). Initially, sensitization appeared to be of past relevance only, due to use of calendula. However, it turned out that she followed a self-devised diet consisting largely of food products of the Compositae family. On excluding these food products her skin condition improved quickly. This case report underscores the

Many atopic dermatitis (AD) patients follow elimination diets for long periods of time because of true or--even more often--suspected food allergies or hypersensitivities. In the present study we investigated the nutritional status of adult AD patients by evaluating food intake protocols followed by measuring different serum parameters. Evaluation of the food intake protocols over 3 days (n = 47) showed that the total calorie intake met recommended intake in 12 patients (group A), ranged between 75-100% of the requirements in 23 patients (group B) and was 50-75% in 12 patients (group C). Hypobaric chamber training has a potential risk of inducing decompression sickness (DCS). A case of a patient with an atopic dermatitis who complained of paresthesia and numbness in his left arm and shoulder during the altitude exposure is presented here. His symptoms were severe enough for the attending medical officer to diagnose Type II DCS, but it turned out to be a probable case of simple skin bends requiring no treatment. The author can find no better explanation for this discrepancy than the contribution of dermatitis. The possibility of atopic dermatitis confounding the correct diagnos

Atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic inflammatory skin disease, is frequently seen in patients with a personal or family history of asthma and allergic rhinitis. Population studies suggest an increasing prevalence of AD in children since World War II, with 10-15% of the population being affected by AD at some time during childhood. In patients with moderate to severe AD, involvement can be life-long, causing significant interference with school, work and social interactions. The term atopic dermatitis was introduced to reflect the close association between AD and respiratory allergy. During the p

In a prospective computerized study, basic and minor features of atopic dermatitis were studied systematically in established cases of atopic dermatitis (AD; n = 428) and compared with subjects randomly collected from the caucasian normal population of young adults (NP; n = 659). Complete genetic data (history of AD, allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma) were obtained from the first-degree relatives of all subjects (about 9,000 family members). In young adults, atopy was found in 22.5% (AD 4.7%, allergic rhinitis 17.9%, allergic asthma 4.8%). Of 428 AD patients, 54% had 'pure' AD and 46% suffere
