Allergic contact dermatitis from latex rubber.

Previously we have found occasional patients with delayed hypersensitivity to latex (in rubber gloves) in the absence of allergy to any chemicals in the rubber chemical screen. There are many reports of contact urticaria to latex and isolated reports of delayed hypersensitivity to latex, usually in the presence of contact urticaria. To establish if latex ruber is a more common cause of delayed hypersensitivity than is currently recognized, we patch tested all patients attending our contact dermatitis clinic, over a 6-month period, with latex. Of 822 patients, 16 (1.9%) demonstrated positive cu

Surfactants and experimental irritant contact dermatitis.

Surface-active agents (surfactants) are characterized by the possession of 2 different moieties, both polar and non-polar regions on the same molecule. Surfactants are broadly classified as anionic, cationic, amphoteric, or non-ionic, according to the nature of the hydrophile yielded in aqueous solution. In currently marketed household, personal, and industrial cleaners, anionic surfactants are the most common class because of their relative ability to solubilize fats and oils, lower the surface tension of aqueous solutions, or form microemulsions. Many surfactants elicit irritant reactions wh

Is allergic contact dermatitis being overlooked?

Contact dermatitis is very common and is among the top 20 reasons for a patient to visit a physician. This article reviews the basic features of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis and provides case examples. We emphasize the use of patch testing to diagnose specific allergens in allergic contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is important to recognize since there are prevention and intervention strategies that may be of great help to the patient. Accurate diagnosis and prevention of contact dermatitis would have a positive impact on medical care costs and job productivity.

Irritant contact dermatitis in warehouse employees.

A detailed survey of skin complaints amongst 114 airline employees working in a new warehouse revealed 26 cases of skin problems which originated during the 2 1/2 year operation. A clinical survey of broadly the same population confirmed 14 cases from 98 employees as chronic irritant contact dermatitis of the hands. The work involved the reception, unpackaging, inspection, repackaging and dispatch of aircraft parts. The source of the skin irritation was not to be found in the work itself. Rather, the presence among the employees of two severe cases of non-occupational eczema, combined with the

Allergic contact dermatitis to topical glucocorticosteroids.

During the past decade, the reported incidence of allergic reactions to topically applied glucocorticosteroids has increased significantly. The two cases reported here typify the presenting symptoms of the glucocorticosteroid-allergic persons. These cases also illustrate the extensive cross-reactivity among the different topical corticosteroids, as well as the potential for systemic contact dermatitis to occur following parenteral exposure. These cases are reviewed in the context of the many other reports in the literature of similar allergic reactions.

Occupational contact dermatitis due to acrylonitrile.

Within DSM Chemicals BV, a producer of acrylonitrile, skin complaints are frequent. The majority of these are of an irritant nature, while a smaller portion is based on acquired allergies. Allergological examination revealed 5 employees with an allergy to acrylonitrile. 1 of these subjects also developed paraesthesiae in the skin sites affected, a finding not previously described for acrylonitrile. In the guinea pig maximization test (GPMT), acrylonitrile showed strong allergenic potential. For prevention and treatment of contact allergologic disorders, close cooperation between occupational h

Urticarial contact dermatitis in food handlers.

OBJECTIVE: To show that prick testing (using fresh samples of the food suspected from the patient's history) and not only patch testing is the appropriate investigation in selected cases of hand dermatitis in patients who spend considerable time handling foods (for example, catering workers, cooks). SETTING: The Contact and Occupational Dermatitis Clinic at the Skin and Cancer Foundation, a tertiary referral centre in Sydney. PATIENTS: Fourteen patients with hand dermatitis present for an average of 6.17 years referred by dermatologists and occupational health physicians. INTERVENTIONS: Pat
