Contact urticaria and protein contact dermatitis in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases in a period of 12 years.

BACKGROUND: Although occupational contact urticaria (CU) and protein contact dermatitis (PCD) are considered frequent among workers with exposure to proteinaceous materials, data on occupations at risk and the main causes of these occupational skin diseases are relatively limited. OBJECTIVES: To report the causative agents and risk occupations for CU and PCD in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases (FROD). METHODS: We retrieved from the FROD all recognized cases of CU/PCD in the years 2005-2016. RESULTS: With 570 cases, CU and PCD constituted 11% of all recognized cases of occupatio

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis diagnosed by a systematic stepwise exposure assessment of allergens in the work environment.

BACKGROUND: Information on the presence of contact allergens and irritants is crucial for the diagnosis of occupational contact dermatitis. Ingredient lists and Material Safety DataSheets (MSDSs) may be incomplete. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the workability of a systematic exposure assessment in consecutive patients with suspected occupational contact dermatitis, and to study how it could potentially aid correct diagnostic classification. METHODS: A tool for systematic stepwise assessment of exposures in the work environment was developed, consisting of six steps spanning medical history and wo

Occupational protein contact dermatitis from spices in a butcher: a new presentation of the mugwort-spice syndrome.

Protein contact dermatitis to meat is well known in butchers; spices are another source of potential contact allergy and usually are not recognized. We present a first case of contact-dermatitis to spice mix in a 39-year-old-butcher. The patient underwent skin prick testing (SPT) with standard allergens (ALK) and different meat and spice extracts (Stallergènes), scratch-patch testing with spice mix containing glutamate, paprika and other spices. Specific serum-IgE was measured with CAP-FEIA. SPT only showed an immediate-type sensitization to mugwort (+ +), as well as different spices (paprika

Trends in occupational and work-related contact dermatitis attributed to nickel, chromium and cobalt in the UK: findings from The Health and Occupation Research network 1996-2019.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to metals such as nickel, chromium and cobalt can be associated with contact dermatitis, which can adversely affect an individual's health, finances and employment. Despite this, little is known about the incidence of metal-related occupational contact dermatitis over prolonged periods of time. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the medically reported trends in the incidence of work-related contact dermatitis attributed to nickel, chromium and cobalt in the UK. METHODS: Incidence and trends in cases of occupational contact dermatitis caused by nickel, chromium or co

Isocyanate induced allergic contact dermatitis in a university undergraduate student: An occupational dermatitis case report, review of laboratory safety regulations, and implications for campus research.

A 19-year-old female college undergraduate developed an intensely swollen, erythematous and pruritic rash on the face and hands while working in an optical fabrication lab producing photosensitive polymers. She had no respiratory symptoms. The rash was consistent with contact dermatitis and there was no clinical evidence of respiratory involvement with normal spirometry. A review of the safety data sheets of chemicals used in the laboratory revealed several known sensitizers, including 6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), dibutyl phthalate, and 2,4,6-tribromophenyl acrylate. Patch testing confi

Skin Sensitisation and Dermatitis Among Epoxy-Exposed Workers in a Wind Turbine Plant: Influence of Occupational Factors.

BACKGROUND: Epoxy polymers, widely used in industries such as wind turbine production, are common causes of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). However, gaps remain mostly regarding the type of occupational exposure (specific tasks) and protective strategies. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate epoxy resin sensitisation in a wind turbine blade plant and assess its associations with tasks, medical history, clinical patterns, and personal protective equipment (PPE) use. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in a large wind turbine blade facility. A group of volunteer workers completed a questionna

Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis From Over-Ear Headphones: Chemical Analysis Reveals Octylisothiazolinone and Other Potential Skin Sensitizers.

BACKGROUND: Over-ear headphones are a growing source of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Identifying well-known and new culprit sensitizers in such products is challenging because of a lack of labelling and limited cooperation from manufacturers. OBJECTIVES: To report potential skin sensitizers in occupationally-used headphones from patients attending an occupational allergy clinic. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The over-ear headphones from two octylisothiazolinone (OIT)-allergic patients with ear ACD were chemically analysed using ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (

Three Cases of Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis Where Causative Agents Were Identified Using Patch Test Panel S.

Identifying the causative substances of occupational contact dermatitis is challenging because of several chemicals and materials in the workplace that can cause contact dermatitis. We experienced three cases of intractable eczema identified as work-related contact dermatitis by Patch Test Panel S, which helped identify the possible substances. We experienced three cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis, and their causative agents were identified by Patch Test Panel S. Although there are some limitations, Patch Test Panel S might be useful to determine the substrates to cause allerg

Allergic contact dermatitis to rubber accelerators in protective gloves: Problems, challenges, and solutions for occupational skin protection.

Protective gloves are an elementary component of personal protective equipment in many occupations and are intended to protect the hands from various hazards (e.g., wetness, chemicals, mechanical forces, or thermal stress). This is particularly important when other occupational safety measures (e.g., technical-organizational measures) cannot be implemented or are insufficient. However, it is not uncommon for protective gloves themselves to become a problem, as some of their ingredients (e.g., rubber accelerators) can cause allergic reactions. Accelerators in rubber gloves include thiurams, dit
