Type IV hyperlipoproteinemia: effects of a caloric restricted type IV diet versus physical training plus isocaloric type IV diet.

Serum lipids, plasma insulin and glucagon, aerobic capacity, and body composition were examined in middle-aged men (X age = 44.2 years) with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia to determine the relative effectiveness of a caloric restricted type IV hyperlipoproteinemia diet (group A) versus physical training plus an isocaloric type IV diet (group B). After 9 weeks of the above interventions, reductions (P less than 0.01) in mean cholesterol levels from 213 to 186 (12% change) and from 205 to 185 mg/dl (9% change), and in triglyceride levels from 332 to 211 (29% change) and from 263 to 138 mg/dl (42% …

Diet-microbiota interactions influence pregnancy success in females undergoing artificial insemination: insights from the vaginal microbiota and Mediterranean diet.

The vaginal microbiota plays a key role in female fertility, yet its interaction with diet and lifestyle remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to assess the influence of the Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence and the vaginal microbial profile on pregnancy outcomes in females undergoing artificial insemination (AI). Vaginal swabs from 104 participants were analysed using amplicon-based sequencing to assess microbial diversity and composition in relation to pregnancy status and MD adherence. The overall pregnancy rate following artificial insemination was 23.07% (8.65% resulted in pregnancy lo…

Impaired corneal nerve markers in type 2 diabetic rats: comparison to models of diet-induced obesity and diet reversal.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy dietary habits are key risk factors for type 2 diabetes, a prevalent metabolic disease with significant health implications. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of type 2 diabetes that causes sensory and motor impairment. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to contrast the impact of cafeteria-diet-induced obesity model with a cafeteria diet combined with streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic model on measures of corneal neuropathy in rats. Additionally, this study explored the effects of diet reversal and the correlation between corneal nerve para…

Ethnic differences in thiamine status persist after adjusting for diet; findings from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Thiamine (vitamin B1) status might play a role in cognition and mental health. Recent research suggests that there are ethnic differences in thiamine status. We aimed to test the hypothesis that black individuals have a higher risk of thiamine deficiency than white individuals, based on the erythrocyte transketolase activity coefficient (ETKAC), and assess differences in thiamine intake, using nutritional survey data. METHODS: We used the published data of the UK's National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling programme (2008-2019) and examined differences in the ETKAC bet…

Association between Paleolithic diet fraction and systemic low-grade chronic inflammation in the Malmö diet and cancer study cohort.

PURPOSE: The Paleolithic Diet Fraction (PDF) estimates the proportion of absolute dietary intake derived from food groups included in the Paleolithic diet. In the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study (MDCS), higher PDF and lower systemic low-grade chronic inflammation (SLGCI) have been associated with lower cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality. We examined associations between PDF and SLGCI in the MDCS. METHODS: The study population (n = 23,250; 63% women; ages 44-74 years) excluded participants with prior coronary events, diabetes, stroke, high-grade inflammation, or missing baseline covariate dat…

Switching from high-fat diet to normal diet ameliorate BTB integrity and improve fertility potential in obese male mice.

Obesity is a prominent risk factor for male infertility, and a high-fat diet is an important cause of obesity. Therefore, diet control can reduce body weight and regulate blood glucose and lipids, but it remains unclear whether it can improve male fertility and its mechanism. This study explores the effects of switching from a high-fat diet (HFD) to a normal diet (ND) on the fertility potential of obese male mice and its related mechanisms. In our study, male mice were separated into three groups: normal diet group (NN), continuous high-fat diet group (HH), and return to normal diet group (HN)…

NeoUngulatesDiet: A database of ungulate diets in the Neotropics.

Ungulates play a crucial ecological role in tropical forests by influencing various ecosystem processes, including herbivory, seed dispersal and predation, and seedling recruitment. These large mammalian herbivores, including tapirs, camelids, cervids, and peccaries, have a significant impact on plant community structure, composition, and dynamics, especially in the Neotropics. Despite their ecological importance, a systematic understanding of ungulate dietary information has been lacking. The NeoUngulatesDiet database addresses this gap by compiling data from a wide range of sources, includin…

Sherlock Holmes and the mystery of the deadly diet.

In honor of the new section on Forensic Dermatology that appears in Clinics in Dermatology, we present a modern-day detective story we created based on Sherlock Holmes, the famous fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). In our tale, a victim suspects that he is being slowly poisoned. An alteration of the victim's tongue (atrophic glossitis) and jaundice provide diagnostic forensic dermatologic clues. The serum toxicology is negative, and the police find no evidence of common poisons in the household. Sherlock Holmes, however, suspects foul play and must solve the cri

The Impact of Diet and Nutrition on the Oral Microbiome.

At present, it is well known that oral health is essential for the well-being of the body as a whole, thanks to the increasing awareness of how various oral diseases, including periodontal disease, oral carcinomas, and other conditions, have a close connection with various systemic disorders. In recent decades, studies on the oral microbiome have increasingly emphasized how the balance between the host and the microbial species that coexist there is essential for oral health at all stages of life. However, there are many factors capable of interfering with that balance, and diet is precisely o…

Lipoprotein(a) and Effects of Diet: Time for Reassessment.

Dietary modification is a critical tool in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). While the role of saturated fat (SFA) intake is well established in affecting LDL cholesterol concentrations, diet impacts on lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) have been less studied. Lp(a) is a prevalent, strong, and highly heritable risk factor for CVD and a therapeutic target for CVD risk management. While significant insights have been made into the genetic regulation of Lp(a), our understanding of any metabolic impact on Lp(a) by other factors, including diets, is limited. For many years, Lp(a) was not conside…

Vegetarian diets for longevity: friend or foe?

Vegetarianism is a healthy dietary pattern that is postulated to increase longevity. Vegetarianism is adopted for animal ethics, environmental reasons, or religious beliefs. Vegetarian diets are believed to improve the gut microbiome, body weight, cardiovascular health and inflammation; however, a synthesis of the up-to-date evidence does not seem to support these effects. When objective measures are sought, it becomes apparent that there is a lack of high-quality evidence regarding the effect of vegetarian diets on telomere length. Moreover, studies indicating lower mortality rates for vegeta…
