The impact of diet on psoriasis is not well studied but it is of interest to many patients. A hypocaloric diet with corresponding weight loss can reduce psoriasis severity in overweight or obese patients and should be considered an important supplement to conventional therapy, as argued in this review. Gluten-free diet might improve severity of psoriasis in patients with coeliac disease or merely presence of coeliac-specific antibodies. Mediterranean diet might also be beneficial. Overall, studies do not support a beneficial effect of micronutrient supplements (i.e., vitamin D, selenium, vitam

Dietary interventions in fibromyalgia: a systematic review.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic non-degenerative disease, whose nutritional therapy seems controversial. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the knowledge about the effect of dietary interventions on patient-reported outcomes (PRO) and inflammation in patients with FM. Six electronic databases - PubMed, BioMed Central, Cochrane library, EMBASE, LILACS and ISI - were searched for clinical trials, in which a dietary intervention in patients with FM diagnosed was conducted. Quality of evidence assessment was measured in accordance with GRADE methodology. Seven clinical trials - 3 randomized

A novel ketogenic diet that reduces seizures and prevents liver steatosis leads to related gut microbiome changes and restores cecal short-chain fatty acid levels in the rapid kindling rat model of epileptogenesis.

We recently introduced an innovative ketogenic diet (KD) demonstrating superior antiseizure efficacy in a rat kindling model of epileptogenesis without inducing hepatic steatosis compared to a classic KD. This new diet features reduced fat content, lower plasma ketosis levels, and incorporates new ingredients, including a novel fermentable fiber blend, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that partially replace omega-6 PUFAs, and medium-chain fatty acids that partially substitute for stearic acid. In the present study, we conducted gut microbiota analyses on cecum samples to elucidate i

Dietary Patterns, Foods, and Nutrients to Ameliorate Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease without pharmacological treatment yet. There is also a lack of specific dietary recommendations and strategies to treat the negative health impacts derived from NAFLD. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to compile dietary patterns, foods, and nutrients to ameliorate NAFLD. METHODS: A literature search was performed through MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. RESULTS: Several guidelines are available through the literature. Hypocaloric Mediterranean diet is the most acce

Re: Aerobic Exercise Plus Hypocaloric Diet on Serum Leptin Concentrations in Adults With Primary Hypertension and Overweight/Obesity: Results From the EXERDIET-HTA Trial.

This correspondence addresses the EXERDIET-HTA substudy by Aparicio and colleagues, which concludes that 16 weeks of aerobic exercise plus a hypocaloric DASH diet reduced serum leptin more than diet with activity counselling in hypertensive adults with overweight or obesity. Five concerns are raised: inference from within-group p values despite a non-significant time × group interaction; pooling of three sub-threshold exercise protocols; mislabelling of an active comparator as 'attention control'; sevenfold attrition asymmetry analysed by complete-case rather than intention-to-treat methods; a

Clinical studies with mazindol.

An anoerxiant, mazindol suppresses food intake by 1) stimulating beta-adrenergic receptors, 2) inhibiting the feeding center and, 3) stimulating the satiety center in the hypothalamus. In Japan, mazindol is available for clinical use. We examined the effects of mazindol on 1) body weight, appetite, and abnormalities of obesity-related diseases in long-term use 2) maintenance of the reduced body weight after very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) therapy 3) combined use with VLCD therapy and, 4) inhibition of body weight gain in Prader-Willi syndrome. In long-term effects of mazindol, the average reducti

Dietary Vitamin D Insufficiency Aggravates High-Fat Diet-Induced Hepatic Steatosis Associated with Reduced Hepatic SIRT1 Activity and Nrf2-Related Antioxidant Gene Expression in Male C57BL/6J Mice.

Background/Objectives: As obesity continues to increase globally, it has become a major contributor to the growing burden of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Hepatic lipid accumulation during obesity contributes to oxidative stress and alterations in mitochondrial homeostasis, key features of NAFLD progression. This study investigated whether vitamin D insufficiency aggravates obesity-related hepatic steatosis in association with changes in hepatic sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) activity and nuclear factor erythroi
