Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Lebanese licensed dietitians regarding hyperphosphatemia management in patients undergoing hemodialysis in a Lebanese Governorate.

BACKGROUND: Hyperphosphatemia is deemed to be an asymptomatic silent killer, its high prevalence in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) is correlated mainly with malnutrition and mortality. Dietitian's renal nutrition education has a major impact on chronic kidney disease patients' knowledge, and attitude towards nutrition guidelines. However, a large number of factors are acting as barriers to the appropriate practices of Lebanese dietitians in renal therapy. This study evaluated the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of licensed dietitians (LDs) regarding hyperphosphatemia managemen

The role of dietary modification in the prevention and management of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease: An international multidisciplinary expert consensus.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), has become the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. Optimal dietary intervention strategies for MAFLD are not standardized. This study aimed to achieve consensus on prevention of MAFLD through dietary modification. A multidisciplinary panel of 55 international experts, including specialists in hepatology, gastroenterology, dietetics, endocrinology and other medical specialties from six continents collaborated in a Delphi-based consensus development proc…

Perspectives on Neuronutrition in Prevention and Treatment of Neurological Disorders.

The term neuronutrition has been proposed as part of nutritional neuroscience, studying the effects of various dietary components on behavio … r, food environment, etc.) on the development of nervous disorders and includes nutrition, clinical dietetics, and neurology. There is evidence that the neuronutritional approach can influence neuroepigenetic modifications, immunological regulation, metabolic control, and behavioral patterns. The practices and needs of dietitian in school lunch program in Taiwan.

Nutrition-related problems among school-age children nowadays become potentially serious. In order to prevent obesity and other nutritionally related diseases in the young generation, a school lunch program has been proposed and conducted in Taiwan. It is to ensure that students' nutritional intake meets the daily requirement and to help students develop correct eating habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle. A professional dietitian who has a clear concept regarding food material utilization, cooking methods and nutritional values thus becomes important. However, the majority of schools in Ta

Dietitians and eating disorders: an international issue.

The prevalence of eating disorders is higher in university nutrition faculties than in other faculties. We examined beliefs about and approaches to eating disorders in nutrition education faculties around the world. We developed a questionnaire specifically for this project and distributed 664 copies electronically, using contact information obtained in collaboration with Dietitians of Canada and the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations. Using the 101 questionnaires returned from 14 countries, we found that 77% of respondents felt eating disorders are a concern among nutrition

Development and implementation of the Clinical Privileges for Dietitian Nutrition Order Writing program at a long-term acute-care hospital.

A patient nutrition care plan is of little value unless it is quickly and efficiently implemented. Recognition of the value of appropriate and timely medical nutrition intervention in improving patients' nutritional status led to the development of the Clinical Privileges for Dietitian Nutrition Order Writing (CPD NOW) program at a long-term, acute-care hospital. CPD NOW is a formalized approach specifying the types of nutrition care orders that may be written by a registered dietitian (RD), allowing nutrition recommendations to be implemented immediately. More than 95% of the facility's prima

Assessing nutrition services in an alcohol rehabilitation unit: the role of the registered dietitian.

Nutrition education and consultation can and should play an important role in the recovery process of the ARU patient. Diet therapy in adult lactose malabsorption: present practices.

Three hundred twenty-three of 473 questionnaires sent to hospital dietitians in 50 states and Puerto Rico concerning diet therapy for adult lactose malabsorption were returned and analyzed. Only 42% of the responding dietitians stated that their hospital diet manuals contained a diet for adult lactose malabsorption, with less than 1% having a diet specific for patients with peptic ulcer disease and lactose malabsorption. Physicians in almost half of these hospitals rarely considered lactose malabsorption when prescribing a diet for patients with peptic ulcer disease or rarely modified diets fo

Early palliative care collaboration for paediatric patients with inherited jaw conditions-a traffic light system.

Paediatric maxillofacial surgeons infrequently encounter primary life-limiting conditions with escalating symptoms, contributing to the underutilization of palliative care services. This paper highlights two rare life-limiting oral and maxillofacial conditions - infantile osteopetrosis and osteosclerotic metaphyseal dysplasia - and proposes a collaborative framework integrating palliative care. The cases illustrate the multidisciplinary approach needed for complex symptom management, including end-of-life care in one case. The collaboration involved anaesthesia, surgery, pharmacy, dietetics, en…

[Methods of screening of gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks' gestation].

The aim of this review is to answer the question "how to detect the gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation?". Two approaches are well established: one-step approach (75 g-OGTT) and two-steps approach (50 g followed 100g-OGTT). The analysis of the literature shows that each of these methods has a good reproducibility close to 80 %, without requiring preliminary dietetics. The HAPO study provides consistent data about the 75 g-OGTT materno-fetal morbidity related. Furthermore, the one-step approach, relationship two-steps approach, has several advantages: reduct…

Acne and diet.

Forbidden foods? "The first law of dietetics seems to be: If it tastes good, it's bad for you" (Isaac Asimov, Russian-born biochemist and science fiction writer). This was essentially the Magna Carta for dermatologists of the 1950s: anything coveted by the teenage palate was suspect for morning after acne. Today, half a century later, although the slant has shifted away for this line of thinking in our dermatologic textbooks, several articles on the beliefs and perceptions of acne patients showed that nothing much has changed and that they expect us to give them detailed instructions of what "…

Dietary counselling with or without oral nutritional supplements in the management of malnourished patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

Dietary counselling and oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are recommended for managing malnutrition. A recent systematic review demonstrated (in separate analyses) that dietary counselling and dietary counselling with ONS improved energy intake, weight and some indices of body composition, although there was considerable heterogeneity. The present analysis aimed to examine the effects on mortality and nutritional indices of dietary counselling given with or without ONS and to explore the heterogeneity in the meta-analyses aiming to characterise the groups most likely to benefit from these int
