[Protein C deficiency in patient with sepsis-associated disseminated intravascular coagulation and deep vein thrombosis].

Disseminate intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a clinical pathological syndrome associated to several diseases. Sepsis is the most common cause in infants and children. DIC results from the anomalous activation of blood coagulation, widespread formation of thrombi in the microcirculation, and consumption of clotting factors and platelets. Clinical findings are variable; the most common is bleeding, followed by purpura and acral gangrene (purpura fulminans). We report a patient with sepsis associated-DIC and concurrent deep venous thrombosis. The diagnostic evaluation allowed to discover inheri

Postvaricella purpura fulminans with no evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) or protein S deficiency.

The mechanism of postvaricella purpura fulminans is thought to be due to development of antiprotein S antibodies. These antibodies lead to an acquired transient severe protein S deficiency which results in disseminated intravascular coagulation and microvascular thrombosis. Here a patient presented with postvaricella purpura fulminans, where no clinical or laboratory evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation could be found and there was no deficiency of protein S.

[Amniotic fluid embolism: successful evolution course of isolated disseminated intravascular coagulation and early biological diagnosis].

Amniotic embolism is a sudden, unexpected and devastating complication of pregnancy. The diagnosis is usually made on the basis of clinical presentation after excluding differential diagnosis or at autopsy in the event of death of the parturient. We need to develop simple, non-invasive, sensitive tests for a reliable and early diagnosis. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman, who presented soon after delivery, an isolated disseminated intravascular coagulation with severe haemorrhage, an haemostatic hysterectomy was required. A 3370 g child was delivered by caesarean section. The patient s…

[Clinical observation on treatment of snake bite induced disseminated intravascular coagulation by qinwen baidu decoction].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Qinwen Baidu Decoction (QBD) in treating snake bite induced dissseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). METHODS: Forty-six patients were randomly divided into the control group (n = 16) and the treated group (n = 30). They were all treated with the conventional therapy, including application of anti-snake venom serum and supplement of blood agglutination factors. For the treated group, QBD was administered additionally. The efficacy of treatment, chief indexes for DIC (platelet, fibrinogen and prothrombin time) and their recovery time, etc. were observed

[Sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and hematological aspects as an unusual manifestation of congenital syphilis].

Congenital syphilis is a systemic infectious disease affecting and damaging many organs. It can be treated simply and effectively by penicillin. Our patient presented with sepsis and DIC, which is a rare manifestation, and to our knowledge this is the first reported case at the age of six weeks. We also review the symptoms of the disease focusing on the hematological manifestations of early congenital syphilis, diagnosis and treatment.

Neonatal tuberculosis associated with shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation, hemophagocytic syndrome, and hypercalcemia: a case report.

We report on a female infant with disseminated tuberculosis who presented with clinical sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation starting at 14 days of age. Parenteral ofloxacin combined with streptomycin were used because the enteral route was not possible and intravenous isoniazid and rifampicin were not available. Rare complications including infection-associated hemophagocytic syndrome, hypercalcemia, and adrenal insufficiency were detected and successfully managed.

[Late toxicosis, disseminated intravascular coagulation disorders and acute fatty liver during pregnancy (Sheehan's disease II)].

The authors discuss some etiologic and clinical aspects of M. Sheehan II based on 2 histologically proven cases. They point out the consecutive connection between the preeclampsia, DIG and the development of the syndrom. The role as starters of some medicaments beside other factors is suggested. The paramount importance of an immediate diagnosis and adequate and correct therapeutic measures, which include a prompt interruption of pregnancy and treatment of the acid-base dysbalance, the renal and haematologic failure is stressed, as well as the prophylactic measures.

Experimental infection of horses with African horse sickness virus results in overt disseminated intravascular coagulation.

BACKGROUND: African horse sickness (AHS), caused by the vector-borne African horse sickness virus (AHSV), is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and infection results in high mortality in naïve equine populations. Clinical signs include submucosal petechiae and prolonged bleeding post venepuncture indicative of hypocoagulation. Pathological activation of haemostasis may result from tissue factor expression as a result of vascular endothelial damage or dysfunction, the proposed pathologic mechanism in AHS, potentially resulting in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). OBJECTIVES: To describe…

Delayed acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis-associated disseminated intravascular coagulation following aluminium phosphide poisoning.

Aluminium phosphide is a highly lethal pesticide that liberates phosphine gas, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, distributive shock and … by fever and culture-proven lower respiratory and urinary tract infections, resulting in sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). She required escalation from non-invasive to invasive mechanical ventilation, with lung-protective strategies, targeted antibiotics, component therapy for DIC and early magnesium and calcium supplementation. Despite markedly elevated N-termin …

Thromboelastometric Profile of Sepsis-Induced Coagulopathy and Overt Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Sepsis may cause hemostatic disturbances. Viscoelastic hemostatic assays, such as rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), may reveal functional hemostatic changes not captured by conventional tests. The study aimed to analyze ROTEM parameters in sepsis-induced coagulopathy (SIC) and overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis of adult ICU patients with sepsis or septic shock (May 2023-August 2026) who had ROTEM testing (minimum EXTEM and FIBTEM) performed was conducted. Clinical scores (SOFA, ISTH SIC, ISTH overt DIC), conv…

Toward an endothelium-centered framework for obstetric disseminated intravascular coagulation: Harmonizing pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a life-threatening coagulopathy triggered by placental abruption, amniotic fluid embolism, HELLP syndrome, and postpartum hemorrhage. Although rapid hemostasis and transfusion are central to management, growing evidence implicates endothelial injury, particularly endothelial glycocalyx (eGCX) degradation, in amplifying coagulopathy and organ dysfunction. This review integrates endothelial pathophysiology into modern diagnostic and therapeutic frameworks for obstetric DIC. METHODS: We conducted a narrative synthesis of studi…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation with hyperfibrinolysis induced by a degenerating uterine leiomyoma: A rare case report.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is typically associated with malignancy, sepsis, or obstetric complications. Its occurrence in benign tumors, particularly uterine leiomyomas, is extremely rare. We report a case of a 49-year-old woman with two months of menorrhagia. Laboratory tests revealed anemia, prolonged clotting times, hypofibrinogenemia, and markedly elevated D-dimer and fibrin degradation products (FDP) levels. Coagulation factor activities (V, VIII, XII) were reduced. Thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT) and plasmin-α2-plasmin inhibitor complex (PIC) were elevated, and thro…

Comparison of five different disseminated intravascular coagulation criteria in predicting mortality in patients with sepsis.

OBJECTIVE: Even though patients with sepsis and DIC have a higher mortality rate compared to those without DIC, screening for DIC is not currently part of sepsis management protocols. This may be due to a lack of literature on the frequency of DIC occurrence in sepsis patients, as well as the absence of evidence on the optimal DIC criteria to use for identifying DIC and predicting mortality among the five criteria available. To address this gap, this study investigates the predictive value of five different criteria for diagnosing DIC and its relationship to patient outcomes in our population
