First evidence of microplastic inhalation among free-ranging small cetaceans.

Plastic is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, resulting in widespread exposure across terrestrial and marine spaces. In the environment, plastics can degrade into microparticles where exposure has been documented in a variety of fauna at all trophic levels. Human epidemiological studies have found relationships between inhaled microplastics and oxidative stress and inflammation. Previous studies of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have reported prevalent exposure to plasticizing chemicals (e.g., phthalates) as well as particle loads in gastrointestinal tracts, but exposure from in…

Effect of the number of jittering echoes on jittered delay accuracy in a bottlenose dolphina).

Echolocating dolphins are able to resolve echo delay differences on the order of a microsecond or less if tested using jittered, phantom echoes. Rapid comparisons of alternating echo delays likely facilitate this "hyperacuity" compared to paradigms where echo delays change on longer time scales or with fewer opportunities to compare echoes. This study examined how an echolocating bottlenose dolphin's jitter-detection threshold varied as a function of the number of jittered echoes made available for comparison. The dolphin's task was to report when a phantom echo at a simulated range of 10 m be…

Mercury speciation and selenium in toothed-whale muscles.

Mercury accumulates at high levels in marine mammal tissues. However, its speciation is poorly understood. The main goal of this investigation was to establish the relationships among mercury species and selenium (Se) concentrations in toothed-whale muscles at different mercury levels. The concentrations of total mercury (T-Hg), methylmercury (MeHg), inorganic mercury (I-Hg) and Se were determined in the muscles of four toothed-whale species: bottlenose dolphins (n=31), Risso's dolphins (n=30), striped dolphins (n=29), and short-finned pilot whales (n=30). In each species, the MeHg concentrati…

Brucella ceti and brucellosis in cetaceans.

Since the first case of brucellosis detected in a dolphin aborted fetus, an increasing number of Brucella ceti isolates has been reported in … riable virulence in land animal models and low infectivity for humans. However, brucellosis in some dolphins and porpoises has been demonstrated to be a severe chronic disease, displaying significant clinical and pathological signs related to abortions, male infertility, neurobrucellosis, cardiopathies, bone and skin lesions, strandings, and death.

Object carrying as socio-sexual display in an aquatic mammal.

Amazon river dolphins or botos (Inia geoffrensis Blainville) were observed carrying objects in 221 social groups over a 3-year study period. Sticks, branches and clumps of grass were taken from the water surface and often repeatedly thrashed or thrown. Lumps of hard clay were collected from the river bed and held in the mouth while the carrier rose slowly above the surface and submerged again. Carriers were predominantly adult males and less often subadult males. Adult females and young dolphins rarely carried objects. Groups of dolphins in which object carrying occurred were differentially la…

Total mercury, methyl mercury, and selenium levels in the red meat of small cetaceans sold for human consumption in Japan.

We surveyed the total mercury (T-Hg) and methyl mercury (M-Hg) levels in red meat products (n = 160) from small cetacean species sold for human consumption in markets throughout Japan from 2000 to 2003. Genetic identification showed that the red meat products originated from nine species: false killer whale, bottlenose dolphin, short-finned pilot whale, striped dolphin, rough-toothed dolphin, Risso's dolphin, pantropical spotted dolphin, Baird's beaked whale, and Dall's porpoise. T-Hg and M-Hg concentrations in all red meat products exceeded the provisional permitted levels of T-Hg (0.4 microg

Molecular investigation of endoparasites of marine mammals (Cetacea: Mysticeti, Odontoceti) in the Western Mediterranean.

INTRODUCTION: Whales, dolphins, and porpoises are susceptible to infections by protozoan and metazoan parasites. METHODS: In this study, tissue samples, as well as flatworms and roundworms, were collected from a common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), three short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), two striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), a harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), and a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus). These samples were molecularly analyzed. RESULTS: In one D. delphis, Toxoplasma gondii was detected in multi…

Seroprevalences Against Paracoccidioides cetii: A Causative Agent for Paracoccidiomycosis Ceti (PCM-C) and Coccidioides posadasii; for Coccidioidomycosis (CCM) in Dall's Porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli) and Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) Stranded at Hokkaido, Japan.

Paracoccidiodomycosis ceti (PCM-C) is a zoonotic mycosis characterized by chronic granulomatous cutaneous lesions in cetaceans. It is distributed worldwide and is caused by an unculturable fungus; Paracoccidioides cetii. On the other hand, coccidioidomycosis (CCM), caused by Coccidioides spp., is also a zoonotic and highly pathogenic fungal infection endemic in both American continents. Even though the Far East is not an endemic area of CCM, an autochthonous case has been reported in China. Although the seroprevalence against P. cetii in captive dolphins was 61.0%, there is no information on w…

Clarification of Extensor Tenotomy for Finger Deformities.

This article clarifies the terminology and different applications of proximal Fowler extensor tenotomy and distal Dolphin extensor tenotomy. Although Fowler is a popular eponym for all finger extensor tenotomies, proximal Fowler tenotomy is specifically indicated for swan neck deformities, whereas distal Dolphin tenotomy is indicated for boutonniere deformities. For swan neck deformities with a distal interphalangeal joint extensor lag of greater than 40°, central slip tenotomy can be combined with terminal tendon imbrication or reinsertion. More distal Dolphin tenotomy of the lateral conjoine

Nature or Nurture: Is the Digestive System of the Pontoporia blainvillei Influenced or Determined by Its Diet?

The Franciscana (also known as the La Plata River Dolphin) is a small dolphin that lives in the coastal waters of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. This species is considered the most endangered marine mammal in the western South Atlantic Ocean. Anatomic dissection of the digestive system of 19 animals of different ages, including 2 neonates, 12 juveniles, and 5 adults, was performed. Parameters related to length, breadth, weight, and diameter of the digestive viscera were considered in each case. Our results show that the Franciscana dolphin presents differential characteristics in relation to

A Study of the Head during Prenatal and Perinatal Development of Two Fetuses and One Newborn Striped Dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba, Meyen 1833) Using Dissections, Sectional Anatomy, CT, and MRI: Anatomical and Functional Implications in Cetaceans and Terrestrial Mammals.

Our objective was to analyze the main anatomical structures of the dolphin head during its developmental stages. Most dolphin studies use only one fetal specimen due to the difficulty in obtaining these materials. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) of two fetuses (younger and older) and a perinatal specimen cadaver of striped dolphins were scanned. Only the older fetus was frozen and then was transversely cross-sectioned. In addition, gross dissections of the head were made on a perinatal and an adult specimen. In the oral cavity, only the mandible and maxilla teeth …

Interspecies Retinal Diversity and Optic Nerve Anatomy in Odontocetes.

Throughout evolution, odontocete vision has had to readapt to the aquatic environment, which has had far-reaching effects on ocular anatomy and neurology. The most prominent features include the iris with an operculum, a well-developed choroid, the presence of giant ganglion cells in the retina, and the hemispherical shape of the thick eyecup. In the present study, the optic nerve and the retina were comparatively studied in Odontoceti (Cuvier's beaked whale, common bottlenose dolphin, false killer whale, long-finned pilot whale, Risso's dolphin, striped dolphin), the semi-aquatic common hippo

No evidence of influenza A virus infection in marine mammals stranded in Basque Country coast (Northern Spain) in the context of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b expansion.

Influenza A infection is frequently detected in marine mammals causing mortality events of different magnitude. In recent years, the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus (clade 2.3.4.4b) has been rapidly expanding and infecting a new variety of avian and mammalian species, including marine mammals. Given this new epidemiological context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the influenza A virus infection of marine mammals stranded on the Basque Country coast. 38 marine mammals were studied (2012-2024), most of them (79%) being dolphins (striped dolphin, common dolphin, an…

Nasitrema attenuata (Trematoda) infection of Tursiops truncatus and its potentialities as an aetiological agent of chronic pulmonary lesions.

Two cases of Nasitrema sp (Trematoda) infection of the bottlenosed dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, are reported and N. attenuata is briefly redescribed. The adults of the trematode occurring in the nasal sinuses and posterior nasal passage of the dolphins are considered as practically harmless for the host but thier eggs, aspirated deep into the bronchial tree, may initiate a foreign-body of inflammatory reaction in the lungs and continuous aspiration of such eggs may provoke a chronic pneumonia condition.
