Endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE) is a pathological disorder characterized by a diffuse and elastic thickening of the endocardium. It is often thought to be congenital as most victims are infants who die of congestive heart failure before reaching one year of age. A naturally occurring animal model of EFE was proposed more than a decade ago on the basis of one pair of adult pure-bred Burmese cats which produced offspring consistently affected with EFE. In the present study a case of EFE is described which occurred in a closed colony of experimental SPF cats. A 5-week-old kitten which was found

The normal histologic features of the periodontal tissues in 17 domestic ferrets (10 male and 7 female) are described. The following teeth were histologically evaluated: canines, the maxillary third premolar (P3), the mandibular fourth premolar (P4), the carnassial teeth (P4 in the maxilla and the first molar, M1, in the mandible) and the next molar after the carnassials (M1 in the maxilla and M2 in the mandible). After histologic preparation for light microscopy, the sections were analyzed at magnifications of x 20 and x 100. The histometric measurements performed were 1) distance between the

Aonchotheca putorii is a parasitic nematode of the stomach and small intestines of many wild mammals. Although A putorii has been found in domestic cats in Iowa, it has not been reported to be pathogenic. The parasite caused severe gastric and was associated with a gastric ulcer and secondary anemia in a 10-year-old domestic shorthair cat from Ohio. The source of infection was not determined. Surgical resection of the affected tissue resolved clinical signs. The importance of postoperative administration of an anthelmintic in the resolution of any remaining A putorii is unknown. Ivermectin was

During the last decade, domestic violence has been identified as one of the major causes of emergency room visits by women. As many as 30% of the women who are seen by emergency room physicians exhibit at least one or more symptoms of physical abuse. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these cases go unreported due to a lack of awareness on the part of physicians and other health care providers regarding the law, actual reporting procedures, and potential liability. This article addresses both the medical community's legal liability and the results of a January 1992 survey conducted by the Jef

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) results from an inability of the kidney to concentrate the urine. The underlying cause of NDI is the failure of the collecting ducts to respond to antidiuretic hormone, however, the specific tubular defect is not well understood. In the present investigation an apparent case of NDI was studied in a strain of White Leghorn domestic fowl. In this strain, water intake of the males equaled 24.0% (controls 5.4%) of their body mass (BM) per day while that of the females equaled 51.4% (controls 11.7%) of their BM per day. Plasma osmolality (mosmol/kgH2O) of the ND

Two types of assertiveness, the ability to refuse a demand or request and the ability to initiate a request or affirmatively express a need, were examined in a clinical sample of domestically violent men (N = 78) in contrast to a nonviolent comparison group (N = 29). No significant difference was found between the groups on refusal behavior. However, a significant difference was found on initiating/request behavior, the violent men evidencing lower scores than their nonviolent counterparts. Significant differences in anger and hostility were also apparent between groups. There was a significan

The development of pneumatisation in the postcranial skeleton has been investigated in a flock of Golden Comet pullets from hatching to 182 days posthatching. The timing of development of pneumatisation in the vertebral column, vertebral ribs, sternum and humerus has been demonstrated. No pneumatisation was encountered in the sternal ribs, os coxae or coracoid. Development of pneumatisation in the coracoid and humerus was also studied in a flock of White Leghorn pullets and cockerels from hatching to 126 days posthatching. In this group, regular pneumatisation of the humerus occurred after the

Natural intestinal infection of Isospora in the domestic Sparrow was studied during one year on a farm in Normandy. This survey showed many species and constant multiple infections. Some species were present all year, others were found only at certain times of the year; intensity varied with species and season. Almost all of the Isosporans previously described from the Sparrow were assigned to Isospora lacazei (Labbé, 1893), but this species is shown here in to be a parasite of the Goldfinch. Twelve new species are described on the basis of morphology of fresh sporulated oocysts. The most usef

Professionals and practitioners (N = 228) involved in providing services to the elderly were interviewed regarding their experiences with the mistreatment of older people by their families. Semi-structured questions dealt with: case identification and follow-up procedures; perceptions of etiological factors; and descriptive typologies from illustrative case histories. Findings indicated that domestic mistreatment of the elderly was familiar to most professionals interviewed, to the extent that 60 per cent of the respondents dealt with such cases on a weekly basis. Among the 10 professional gro

An unidentified Babesia was seen in a blood smear from a cat showing signs of anaemia. The cat responded to treatment with diminazene (Berenil). The morphology of the parasite is described and a comparison is made with other Babesia which have been described from the domestic cat and wild felids. This parasite most closely resembled B. herpailuri described from a jaguarundi in South America.

Animals are constantly exposed to a wide variety of foreign chemicals, many of which are potentially toxic and some of which result in the clinical poisonings. Pesticides are applied on or around animals for the control of insects and rodents. These chemicals may be placed in areas without regard for accessibility to household pets and domestic livestock. Insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides are routinely and haphazardly applied to animal and environmental surfaces alike with apparent disregard for differences in absorptive capability. Fortunately, newer herbicides and fungicides are relat

The karyotypes of 731 sheep of various breeds were studied and considered in association with previous chromosome studies of domestic sheep. A high incidence of the t2 trnslocation was found in two pedigree flocks of New Zealand Romney sheep. One of these flocks was established over 100 years ago and it is suggested that this translocation originated in the Romney Marsh breed of sheep in England. A naturally occurring double translocation heterozygote 52t1t2 was reported for the first time. A further flock of sheep of the Perendale breed was found with a high incidence of dicentric chromosome
