Risk assessment of opportunistic bacterial pathogens in drinking water.

This study was undertaken to examine quantitatively the risks to human health posed by heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria found naturally in ambient and potable waters. There is no clear-cut evidence that the HPC bacteria as a whole pose a public health risk. Only certain members are opportunistic pathogens. Using the four-tiered approach for risk assessment from the National Academy of Sciences, hazard identification, dose-response modeling, and exposure through ingestion of drinking water were evaluated to develop a risk characterization, which estimates the probability of infection fo…

Criterion variability in problem-drinking research on college students.

A persistent issue confronting research on problem drinking (PD) and heavy drinking (HD) among college-age adults is the lack of a consistent, valid definition and criteria for either of the two conditions. This article presents a review and analysis of the criteria used in a selected group of studies on college students' PD and HD from 1974 to 1993. All studies within the time period that employed a random sample of students were analyzed for variations in criteria used to define either PD or HD. Sample characteristics, the specific criteria used, and data on prevalence rates found with those…

Can educational programs affect teenage drinking? A multivariate perspective.

Of various means to prevent alcohol-related problems among adolescents, school-based educational approaches are very prevalent. The potential effectiveness of such programs will be limited, however, if teenage drinking is determined by factors beyond the influence of school-based interventions, such as demographic characteristics or quality of family environment. On the other hand, educational programs would have greater potential efficacy if teenage drinking is influenced mainly by factors more amenable to change, such as characteristics of individual adolescents like their alcohol expectanci…

Pharmacological evaluation of methylcarbamylcholine-induced drinking behavior in rats.

Methylcarbamylcholine (MCC), a structural analog of carbachol (an acetylcholine agonist), has been reported to be a specific nicotinic cholinergic receptor ligand. MCC produces a robust polydipsic response shortly following central administration. The purpose of the present study was to pharmacologically characterize this increase in drinking behavior. Male Wistar rats were implanted with intracerebroventricular (ICV) cannula guides directed at the left lateral ventricle. Following a recovery period, animals were injected ICV with saline or various doses of MCC (3-60 micrograms) and water cons…

Circadian eating and drinking habits in alloxan diabetic rats.

Eating and drinking habits were studied in control and alloxan diabetic rats of up to 12 months' duration of diabetes, with emphasis on the hour-to-hour circadian pattern and the relationship between eating and drinking. In contrast to previous studies food and water intake started to increase immediately after alloxan injection possibly because of avoidance of alloxan induced acute renal insufficiency by kidney protection during alloxan injection. A biphasic circadian pattern of food and water intake was seen in both diabetic and control rats, but day-time eating and drinking were practically…

Retrospective analysis of lifetime changes in women's drinking behavior.

Retrospective data on drinking behavior and related life experiences have been a neglected resource in research on alcohol use in the general population. Data from a 1981 national survey of women's drinking indicate the potential value of retrospective data analysis. The 1981 data provide comparative ages of onset for drinking behavior, drinking consequences, and health problems, and allow comparisons among different cohorts of women. The data also show the variability in women's lifetime drinking patterns and the time-ordering of heavy drinking in relation to onset of depression and reproduct…

Endogenous renin-angiotensin system and drinking behavior in flounder.

High rates of drinking in seawater-adapted, compared with freshwater (FW)-adapted, flounder were associated with raised plasma chloride and osmotic concentrations. Hypotension in FW-adapted fish, after papaverine administration, gave rise to greatly elevated rates of drinking. This dipsogenic response apparently relied on activation of the endogenous renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and was abolished by simultaneous administration of the converting enzyme inhibitor, captopril. Exogenous angiotensin II was shown to be dipsogenic and vasopressor in the FW-adapted fish. The physiological importance…

Four year MMPI changes in abstinent and drinking alcoholics.

Alcoholic patients completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) while hospitalized for treatment and again after 4 years of follow-up. Those who remained abstinent and functioned well in the community for the 4-yr period were characterized during treatment by a significant elevation on the Depression (D) scale which decreased to normal ranges at follow-up. Those who continued to drink periodically over the 4-yr period had initial peaks on Psychopathy (Pd) and Hypomania (Ma) which were still elevated at follow-up. An intermediate group who were usually abstinent during the 4

Factors influencing outcome of pregnancy in heavy-drinking women.

18 pregnant women identified as heavy drinkers by the criteria of Cahalan et al., gave birth to 6 normal infants, 5 infants with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and 7 with partial FAS. Average daily alcohol consumption of mothers of normal infants was less than that of mothers of FAS and partial FAS infants. Lower socioeconomic class, higher parity and increased use of tobacco and other drugs were non-alcohol-related maternal factors which appeared to influence the outcome of pregnancy in heavy-drinking women.

Female alcoholics. III. Development and pattern of problem drinking.

The study provides a social and psychiatric description of development, drinking pattern and concomitant psychiatric disturbances of 100 female alcoholics, admitted to the Department of Alcohol Disease, Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm between 1963 and 1969. Comparisons are made between this group of women and 100 men of the same age, who were admitted during the same period. The criteria for selection were: 1) at least 7 days of in-patient treatment; 2) early cases. The subjects were between 20 and 65 years of age with a mean age of 40. It is shown that the women started drinking alcohol at h…

Does ruminating about the previous night's drinking during a hangover predict changes in heavy episodic drinking? A two-wave, 30-day prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether hangover-related rumination-repeatedly dwelling on negative aspects of yesterday's drinking while hungover the following morning-predicts changes in three dimensions of heavy episodic drinking (HED) over time. METHOD: N = 334 emerging adults (aged 19-29) from three Eastern Canadian universities who had recently experienced a hangover completed online self-report questionnaires at baseline (Wave 1) and 30 days later (Wave 2; 71.6% retention). HED was assessed in frequency (number of HED episodes), perceptions (how participants perceived the extent of their heavy …

Fetal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water and congenital malformations: A nation-wide register-based study on PFAS in drinking water.

BACKGROUND: Teratogenic properties of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been assessed in a few studies, however, epidemiological evidence for an association is inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a Swedish nation-wide register-based cohort study to assess the associations of estimated fetal exposure to the sum of drinking water perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) with major congenital malformations. METHODS: We included all births in Sweden during 2012-2018 of mothers residing ≥fou…

Perceived Risk of Binge Drinking among Older Alcohol Users: Associations with Alcohol Use Frequency, Binge Drinking, Alcohol Use Disorder, and Alcohol Treatment Use.

Despite the high prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking among older adults, little research has been conducted on the association between their alcohol risk perception and alcohol use patterns. Using data on past-year alcohol users aged 50 and older (N = 6693) in the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we examined the (1) associations between risk perception of binge alcohol use 1-2 times a week and alcohol use frequency, binge use frequency, and alcohol use disorder (AUD), and (2) the association between alcohol treatment use and risk perception. About 40% of past-year alcohol …

Have declines in the prevalence of young adult drinking in English-speaking high-income countries followed declines in youth drinking? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use in early adulthood is a significant public health concern. The prevalence of adolescent alcohol consumption has been … s stable in New Zealand and Canada. In the US, there was evidence of a decline in the prevalence of drinking among under-21s, but results for adults over the minimum purchase age were mixed. The prevalence of alcohol consumption in young adults appears to be broadly declining. This could lead to reduced rates of alcohol-related harms in the future. Further …

Effects of metformin on binge-like ethanol drinking and adenosine monophosphate kinase signaling in inbred high drinking in the dark line 1 mice.

BACKGROUND: Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling plays a vital role in regulating cellular metabolism and energy throughout the body. Ethanol and cocaine both reduce AMPK activity in addiction-related brain regions. Though AMPK activation has been found to reduce cocaine seeking, its role in harmful drinking and alcohol use disorder (AUD) progression remains unclear. We asked whether metformin, a first-line type 2 diabetes medication that targets AMPK, can reduce binge-like ethanol intake in inbred High Drinking in the Dark Line-1 (iHDID-1) mice, a genetic risk mod…

Alcohol and educational inequalities: Hazardous drinking prevalence and all-cause mortality by hazardous drinking group in people aged 50 and older in Europe.

BACKGROUND: We examined educational inequalities in hazardous drinking prevalence among individuals aged 50 or more in 14 European countries, and explored educational inequalities in mortality in hazardous drinkers in European regions. UNLABELLED: Methods: We analyzed data from waves 4, 5 and 6 of the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). We estimated age-standardized hazardous drinking prevalence, and prevalence ratios (PR) of hazardous drinking by country and educational level using Poisson regression models with robust variance. We estimated the relative index of inequa…

Subgroups of Young Sexual Minority Women Based on Drinking Locations and Companions and Links With Alcohol Consequences, Drinking Motives, and LGBTQ-Related Constructs.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority women (SMW; e.g., lesbians, bisexual women) are at increased risk for alcohol use disorders and related problems compared with heterosexual women. However, little is known about the social context in which drinking occurs in this high-risk population. This study used latent class analysis to identify subgroups of SMW based on drinking locations and companions and examined whether class membership was associated with consequences, drinking motives, and LGBTQ-related constructs (e.g., outness, discrimination). METHOD: A sample of 670 SMW reported on alcohol use, drink…
