Comparative ultrastructure characterization of the oropharyngeal cavity floor (lower beak, tongue, laryngeal entrance) of the newly hatched domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) and Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata).

The scant information about the oropharyngeal cavity floor of the newly hatched Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) and domestic duck (Anas plat … are surrounded by 2-3 layers. The dorsal row of the papillary crest carried 14-16 papillae in both ducks, while in the domestic duck, the ventral row had 6-8 small papillae, while in the Muscovy duck, it carried 8-10 papillae. In the Muscovy duck, the lingual root carried three oblique papillary rows on each lateral portion of its dorsal surface.

Divergent early host transcriptional responses to H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in chickens and ducks.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) of the H5N8 subtype have caused severe outbreaks in poultry and wild birds worldwide. Disease outcome differs markedly between avian species: chickens typically develop acute infection with high mortality, whereas ducks often exhibit milder or delayed disease. The molecular basis underlying these species-specific differences in early host responses remains incompletely understood. To characterize early transcriptional responses to HPAIV infection, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed on lung tissues from chickens and ducks experimentally inf…

Integrated analyses of host genetics and gut microbiota provide mechanistic insights into feed efficiency in ducks.

BACKGROUND: Feed efficiency (FE) is a major determinant of productivity, economic sustainability, and environmental impact in livestock production. Although Pekin ducks constitute a substantial proportion of global poultry meat production, improvement of FE has progressed slowly, largely due to an incomplete understanding of its complex biological basis. In particular, how host genomic variation and gut microbial communities-especially across different intestinal segments-jointly contribute to FE remains poorly characterized in ducks. RESULTS: We integrated whole-genome sequencing (WGS) with …

Micro- and mesoplastic contaminants in marine diving ducks: A first assessments from the coast of Japan.

Plastic pollution poses a serious threat to seabirds, yet the relationship between plastics and molluscivorous species remains severely understudied despite high risk of exposure to plastics in sediments and contaminated prey. As coastal benthic environments are hotspots for plastic contamination, seaducks that dive and forage on mollusks (predominantly benthic bivalves and gastropods) in coastal habitats may be particularly vulnerable. This study presents the first assessment of plastic contamination in two molluscivorous seaducks: Black Scoters (Melanitta americana) and Stejneger's Scoters (…

A Prevotella-Rich Gut Microbiota and Microbial CAZymes Are Associated with Half-Diving Length in Ducks.

The gut microbiota is closely associated with host growth by nutritional metabolism and immune homeostasis. Half-diving length, a key indicator of duck development and production efficiency, correlates with economic traits like body weight and slaughter yield, yet its link to gut microbiota remains unclear. This study combined metagenomic and metabolomic analyses to explore the association between gut microbiota and duck half-diving length. We found distinct microbial communities between ducks with high (H) and low (L) half-diving lengths: the H group had more carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZy…

Multi-omics analyses reveal the regulatory mechanisms of riboflavin to improve meat quality in Pekin ducks.

This study explored the effects of dietary riboflavin supplementation on breast meat quality, muscle fiber characteristics, metabonomics, transcriptomics, and phosphoproteomics of Pekin ducks. A total of 96 14-day-old ducks were randomly allotted to two treatment groups, each with 8 replicates of 6 birds, and were fed diets supplemented with 0 or 10 mg/kg riboflavin for 28 days. Compared to the control group without riboflavin supplementation, dietary riboflavin supplementation significantly increased breast muscle shear force, myofiber diameter, perimeter, and cross-sectional area, as well as…

Genetic diversity, serotype, and antimicrobial profiles of Riemerella anatipestifer isolated from ducks and chickens in Thailand.

Riemerella anatipestifer, which causes New Duck Syndrome, poses a significant threat to poultry production, causesing respiratory distress, neurological signs, and septicemia primarily in ducks and occasionally chickens. R. anatipestifer outbreak control requires knowledge about their genetic diversity, serotypes, and antibiotic profiles, which are currently unavailable. In this study, R. anatipestifer was isolated from ducks and chickens in Thailand between 2021 and 2023 to characterize their genetic relatedness, antimicrobial profiles, and resistance genes. Seven different serotypes were ide…

Comparative Analysis of Mandibular Shape Variation in Domestic Geese and Ducks Using Linear and Geometric Morphometrics.

In this study, a comparative assessment of species- and sex-related differentiation was conducted using two morphometric approaches based on mandibles of domestic geese (Anser anser domesticus) and domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus). A relatively traditional approach based on linear measurements was applied alongside a more recent method employing three-dimensional scanning and landmark-based geometric morphometric techniques. The effectiveness of both methods in discriminating morphological differences associated with species and sex was evaluated. For this purpose, a total of 80 …

Tibial adaptations to dietary 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 supplementation under two distinct vitamin regimens in young ducks.

Tibia disorders in modern ducks are frequently associated with rapid weight gain and compromised bone quality, which is defined as the structural and material properties of bone tissue that determines its strength and fracture resistance. These factors significantly increase the risk of fractures and chronic pain. Studies suggest that 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3), a vitamin D3 metabolite, effectively addresses bone disorders, potentially depending on dietary vitamin regimens, which are determined by the amount and ratio of vitamins in the diet. This study used a 2 × 2 factorial design …

Multi-Omics Insights into the Relationship Between Intestinal Microbiota and Abdominal Fat Deposition in Meat Ducks.

Abdominal fat deposition is an important economic trait in poultry, as excessive accumulation reduces feed efficiency and carcass yield. The gut microbiota is known to influence host energy metabolism and fat storage, suggesting its potential involvement in fat deposition. This study examined the relationship between intestinal microbiota and abdominal fat deposition in an F2 population derived from Cherry Valley Ducks (♂) × Runzhou Crested White Ducks (♀) at 42 days of age. Based on abdominal fat rate, ducks with values of 0-0.75% and 1.5-2.25% were defined as the low (LF) and high (HF) abdom…

Arsenic induced neurotoxicity in the brain of ducks: The potential involvement of the gut-brain axis.

BACKGROUND: Arsenic is a widely distributed ecotoxic pollutant that has been found to cause neurotoxicity in a variety of species. Gut-brain axis is a two-way information network between the gut microbiome and the brain, which is closely related to organismal health. However, the role of the gut-brain axis in arsenic-induced neurotoxicity remains largely unknown. METHODS: In order to explore whether there is a relationship between brain and gut microbiota of meat ducks, we performed molecular biological detection including RT-qPCR and Western blot, as well as morphological detection including…

Prey availability and foraging activity by tundra-nesting sea ducks: Strong preference for specific wetland types.

Wetlands in Arctic tundra support abundant breeding waterbirds. Wetland types differing in area, depth, vegetation, and invertebrate biomass density may vary in importance to birds, and in vulnerability to climate change. We studied availability and use of different wetland types by prelaying females of four species of sea ducks (Mergini) breeding on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska, USA: long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis) and Steller's (Polysticta stelleri), spectacled (Somateria fischeri), and king eiders (Somateria spectabilis). All four species preferred shallow vegetated wetlands ver…
