Transmission risks of schistosomiasis japonica: extraction from back-propagation artificial neural network and logistic regression model.

BACKGROUND: The transmission of schistosomiasis japonica in a local setting is still poorly understood in the lake regions of the People's Republic of China (P. R. China), and its transmission patterns are closely related to human, social and economic factors. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We aimed to apply the integrated approach of artificial neural network (ANN) and logistic regression model in assessment of transmission risks of Schistosoma japonicum with epidemiological data collected from 2339 villagers from 1247 households in six villages of Jiangling County, P.R. China. By using the

Help-seeking behavior and its determinants among gender-based violence survivor women in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence is a pervasive public health and human rights problem that disproportionately affects women in Africa, resulting in profound physical, psychological, and social consequences. Despite these impacts, many survivors do not seek formal help due to stigma, fear, and limited access to resources. This study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of help-seeking behavior and identify its determinants among gender-based violence survivor women in Africa. METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following standard methodological guidelines, using s

Drug Injection-Related Norms and High-Risk Behaviors of People Who Inject Drugs in Athens, Greece.

Drug use involves social interactions. Therefore, norms in the proximal environment of people who inject drugs (PWID) can favor behaviors that may result in HIV transmission. This work aimed at studying drug injection-related norms and their potential association with risky behaviors among PWID in Athens, Greece, in the context of economic recession and political activism that followed the fiscal crisis and soon after a recent HIV outbreak had leveled off. The Transmission Reduction Intervention Project (TRIP) was a social network-based approach (June 2013 to July 2015) that involved two group

Comparative study of problematic gambling behaviors between American Indian and non-Indian adults in a Northern Plains reservation.

This study compared the active gambling behaviors of American Indian adults, living on or near a reservation with those of non-Indian adults adjacent to or within the reservation. Results indicated that a variety of factors including economic status, unemployment, increased alcohol use, depression, historical trauma, and lack of social alternatives may predispose American Indian adults to greater problematic and pathological gambling behaviors. Unlike previous research that placed males at significantly greater risk for gambling problems, this study found that adult American Indian males and f

Correlates of Homelessness Among Adults with Personality Disorder.

Although personality disorders (PDs) are more common among persons experiencing homelessness than the general population, few studies have investigated the risk of experiencing homelessness among persons with PDs. This study seeks to identify the demographic, socioeconomic, and behavioral health correlates of past-year homelessness among persons with antisocial, borderline, and schizotypal PDs. Nationally representative data of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States was used to identify correlates of homelessness. Descriptive statistics and bivariate associations be

Potential of connected devices to optimize cattle reproduction.

Estrus and calving are two major events of reproduction that benefit from connected devices because of their crucial importance in herd economics and the amount of time required for their detection. The objectives of this review are to: 1) provide an update on performances reached by sensor systems to detect estrus and calving time; 2) discuss current economic issues related to connected devices for the management of cattle reproduction; 3) propose perspectives for these devices. The main physiological parameters monitored separately or in combination by connected devices are the cow activity,

Beyond Individual Risk: A Qualitative Exploration of Intersectional HIV Vulnerabilities Among Black Cisgender Women in Baltimore.

Black cisgender women in the USA experience compounded challenges in protecting themselves from HIV. While prevention efforts often focus on individual-level behaviors, structural and contextual factors critically shape HIV vulnerability and access to care. We conducted qualitative in-depth interviews between October 2021 and April 2023 with 26 Black cisgender women aged 18 to 44 who reported inconsistent condom use and vaginal or anal sex with a male partner in the past 6 months. We used a combined inductive and deductive approach to analyze the data and presented illustrative themes across B

If all your friends jumped off a bridge: the effect of others' actions on engagement in and recommendation of risky behaviors.

There is a large gap between the types of risky behavior we recommend to others and those we engage in ourselves. In this study, we hypothesized that a source of this gap is greater reliance on information about others' behavior when deciding whether to take a risk oneself than when deciding whether to recommend it to others. To test this hypothesis, we asked participants either to report their willingness to engage in a series of risky behaviors themselves; their willingness to recommend those behaviors to a loved one; or, how good of an idea it would be for either them or a loved one to enga

Prosociality in personality disorders: Status quo and research agenda.

Personality disorders (PDs) are characterized by interpersonal dysfunction and deficits in prosociality are theorized to contribute to this. We review studies linking categorical PDs to prosocial and antagonistic traits and highlight studies that assessed prosocial behavior in PDs via economic games. We structure our review based on the recently proposed affordance framework of prosocial behavior, summarizing the evidence for exploitation, reciprocity, temporal conflict, and dependence under uncertainty as situational affordances that allow the expression of personality in prosocial behavior.

Association between fear of COVID-19 and hoarding behavior during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic: The mediating role of mental health status.

Hoarding behavior can effectively improve people's ability to resist risks, so as to reduce the negative effects of risks. However, excessive hoarding behavior will seriously reduce people's quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic can cause excessive hoarding in a large number of people in a short period of time, and also cause a series of economic problems such as social material shortage. It is unclear how hoarding levels are linked to fear and negative emotions caused by COVID-19 among people of different educational backgrounds and social status. The purpose of this study was to explore the

Determinants of psychological well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic among "people living with HIV/AIDS" in India.

Using survey data on 647 "people living with HIV/AIDS" (PLHIV) respondents from India, we examine the association between human, economic, and social capital and psychological well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic, and whether pandemic-induced job and financial insecurity are significant stressors. We find that among human capital indicators, family health status results in a more positive mental state and fewer personal conflicts among PLHIV while having more working-age adults in the household results in more conflict. With regards to economic capital, PLHIV in salaried jobs and self-emplo

Log in and breathe out: efficacy and cost-effectiveness of an online sleep training for teachers affected by work-related strain--study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia and work-related stress often co-occur. Both are associated with personal distress and diminished general functioning, as well as substantial socio-economic costs due to, for example, reduced productivity at the work place and absenteeism. Insomnia complaints by people experiencing work-related stress are correlated with a deficient cognitive detachment from work. Diffuse boundaries between work and private life can additionally complicate the use of recreational activities that facilitate cognitive detachment.Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is effective but rare

Lifestyle and risk of premature sexual activity in a high school population of Seventh-Day Adventists: Valuegenesis 1989.

In the past 20 years, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including AIDS, and the physical, psychological, and economic difficulties associated with unwanted pregnancy have increased steadily among American adolescents. The objective of this study was to evaluate Adventist lifestyle as a modification of popular American culture which reduces the risk of early sexual activity in adolescents and thus also reduces the risk for both STDs and teen pregnancy. The study was based on 8,321 respondents to a questionnaire concerning specific behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes among Seventh-Day Adventis
