PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Childhood asthma is the most common chronic non-communicable disease in children and a major global public health challenge. Although genetic predisposition contributes to asthma susceptibility, the high burden of disease-particularly in high-sociodemographic-index regions-points to a central role of environmental exposures characteristic of the modern environment. This review synthesizes current evidence linking ambient air pollution and heavy metal exposure to childhood asthma, with a focus on early-life vulnerability, underlying biological mechanisms, and implications for

The relationship between blood cholesterol and heart disease is well-established, with the lowering of serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol being the primary target of preventive therapy. Furthermore, epidemiological studies report lower risk for heart disease with higher concentrations of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol. There has also been considerable interest in studying the relationship between dietary cholesterol intake and heart disease risk. Eggs are one of the richest sources of cholesterol in the diet. However, large-scale epidemiological studies have found only

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is a prevalent protozoan infection with a complex lifecycle and wide profile of risk factors. The impact of congenital infection is well documented; however, there is increasing evidence of a much broader range of potential health outcomes and the need to improve our understanding of the transmission patterns and infection sources in the overall population. This study examined the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis in distinct community types from a highly endemic area of Chile.
METHODS: A cross-sectional serosurvey was carried out in households from urban slums, rural vi

Acute bacterial meningitis remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Children <2 years of age are particularly susceptible to infection with encapsulated bacteria due to their immature response to polysaccharide antigens. Conjugate vaccines, which induce T cell memory, can provide immunological protection for these children. The Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine was the first such vaccine to become available. The efficacy of the vaccine has been quoted as being 98%. Its introduction was followed by a dramatic decrease in the incidence of all invasiv

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of lower respiratory tract disease and hospitalization in early infancy. The availability of maternal RSVpreF vaccination and long-acting infant monoclonal antibodies has created two effective but operationally distinct pathways for passive protection.
METHODS: This WAidid consensus document focuses on maternal RSV immunization within an integrated early infancy prevention strategy. A multidisciplinary Consensus Development Group reviewed evidence on infant RSV burden and seasonality, maternal vaccine efficacy and effectiveness, t

Nutrition education and counselling (NEC) is a commonly applied strategy to improve maternal nutrition during pregnancy. However, with the exception special populations and specific diets, the effect of NEC on maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes has not been systematically reviewed. Using a modified Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group method we systematically reviewed the literature and identified and abstracted 37 articles. We conducted meta-analyses for the effect of NEC on maternal, neonatal and infant health outcomes including gestational weight gain, maternal anaemia, birth

The French paradox is a dietary anomaly which has focused attention on the Mediterranean diet. Epidemiological studies revealed that this diet, replete in flavonoid-rich foods (Allium and Brassica vegetables, and red wine), correlated with the increased longevity and decreased incidence of cardiovascular disease seen in these populations. The most frequently studied flavonoid, quercetin, has been shown to have biological properties consistent with its sparing effect on the cardiovascular system. Quercetin and other flavonoids have been shown to modify eicosanoid biosynthesis (antiprostanoid an

Bladder cancer (BC) remains a clinically challenging urothelial malignancy, largely because a substantial proportion of patients have no effective treatment options. Epidemiological studies have shown that metformin can improve the survival rate of cancer patients. However, its clinical application is limited by the requirement of high concentrations to exert antitumor effects. To overcome this limitation, we modified and optimized the biguanide structure using the intermediate derivatization methods and obtained a novel biguanide derivative 4C. Our study revealed that 4C suppressed the expres

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) modifies CD4-positive cells, resulting in immunodeficiency and a wide range of gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations. The burden of HIV-related GI illnesses has significantly evolved with the widespread use of antiretroviral therapy (ART). While ART has effectively reduced the occurrence of opportunistic infections, it has led to an increase in therapy-related GI illnesses. Common esophageal conditions in HIV patients include gastroesophageal reflux disease, idiopathic esophageal ulcers, herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and candidal esophagitis. Ka

Neuroactive steroids can be synthetic or endogenous molecules produced by neuronal and glial cells and peripheral glands. Examples include estrogens, testosterone, progesterone and its reduced metabolites such as 5α-dihydro-progesterone and allopregnanolone. Steroids produced by neurons and glia target the nervous system and are called neurosteroids. Progesterone and analog molecules, known as progestogens, have been shown to exhibit neurotrophic, neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, glial modulatory, promyelinating, and remyelinating effects in several experimental models of neuro

Due to the constantly increasing number of cases, prostate cancer has become one of the most important health problems of modern societies. This review presents the current knowledge regarding the role of nutrients and foodstuff consumption in the etiology and development of prostate malignancies, including the potential mechanisms of action. The results of several in vivo and in vitro laboratory experiments as well as those reported by the clinical and epidemiological research studies carried out around the world were analyzed. The outcomes of these studies clearly show the influence of both

The steep increase in asthma prevalence, observed worldwide in recent decades, has created an urgent need to search for effective methods of its prevention. Among other environmental factors, changes in diet habits and the potential influence of individual food components on immunological processes have been extensively studied as a potential method of intervention in primary prevention of asthma. The preventive role of some nutrients has been confirmed: unpasteurized milk reduced the risk of asthma in epidemiological studies, vitamin D supplementation was effective in preventing the transient

Numerous epidemiological studies have shown that the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) is a strong genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) among people from various ethnic backgrounds. ApoE occurs as three isoforms that differ at two amino acids residues (112 and 158): ApoE ε2, ε3, and ε4. The ε4 allele is responsible for a genetic predisposition to AD, increasing the risk of AD by approximately 4-fold compared to the common ε3 allele. In contrast, the ε2 allele shows a protective effect against AD. APOE ε4 is known to affect the age at onset of AD in a dose-dependent manner. In addition t

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are ubiquitous contaminants in tap drinking water with the potential to produce adverse health effects. Filtering and boiling tap water can lead to changes in the DBP concentrations and modify the exposure through ingestion. Changes in the concentration of 4 individual trihalomethanes (THM4) (chloroform (TCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform (TBM)), MX, and bromate were tested when boiling and filtering high bromine-containing tap water from Barcelona. For filtering, we used a pitcher-type filter and a household reverse os

Caffeine, theophylline, theobromine, and paraxanthine administered to animals and humans distribute in all body fluids and cross all biological membranes. They do not accumulate in organs or tissues and are extensively metabolized by the liver, with less than 2% of caffeine administered excreted unchanged in human urine. Dose-independent and dose-dependent pharmacokinetics of caffeine and other dimethylxanthines may be observed and explained by saturation of metabolic pathways and impaired elimination due to the immaturity of hepatic enzyme and liver diseases. While gender and menstrual cycle

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To analyze whether pregnancy could play a role in the higher prevalence of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) in women. Estrogens strongly modify thyroid economy by increasing iodine clearance, thyroid hormone requirement and production. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) contributes to the increased thyroid hormone synthesis. Both estrogens and hCG can interfere with the regulation of thyroid volume and with thyroid nodule development and progression. The potential effect of hCG is exclusively related to its weak agonistic activity on TSH receptor. Estrogen implication

Uric acid has neuroprotective properties in experimental and clinical studies of neurodegenerative disease. It is, however, associated with increased risk of stroke, yet, despite some inconsistent findings, increasing evidence suggests it may also be related to improved stroke outcomes. We have determined whether there is an effect of plasma uric acid on the short-term outcome of stroke patients in a general hospital setting using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). We also investigated the relationship of uric acid with other clinical correlates. Plasma uric acid was determined in 108 acute isch

The epidemiological features of Cryptosporidium infection among school-age children in China still remain unclear. Hereby, a cross-sectional study of 1637 children aged 3⁻9 years was designed to investigate the risk factors and spatial clusters of Cryptosporidium infection in a rural region of Eastern China. Stool specimens collected from participants were examined using the auramine-phenol and modified acid-fast staining. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to identify the risk factors of Cryptospordium infection. The spatial clusters were analyzed by a discrete Poisson mode

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common chronic inflammatory disease affecting many tissues and resulting in substantial morbidity and increased mortality. Arthritis is the most notable clinical feature, but extra-articular features can have devastating consequences. Pulmonary manifestations are common in RA, with high rates of disease related lung disease and a propensity to pulmonary infections. Respiratory illness remains a leading cause of death among RA populations. Modern medicine greatly reduces the illness burden among patients with RA, particularly through the use of disease-modifying m
