OBJECTIVE: To compare 5 radiographic views for the detection of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in dogs with signs of elbow joint pain.
ANIMALS: 53 dogs (100 elbow joints) with forelimb lameness and signs of elbow joint pain.
PROCEDURES: Mediolateral (ML), flexed ML, craniocaudal (CC), craniolateral-caudomedial oblique (Cr15L-CdMO), and distomedial-proximolateral oblique (Di35M-PrLO) radiographic views of the 100 elbow joints were obtained. Four examiners graded radiographs with regard to elbow joint OCD. Joints were assessed by use of arthroscopy. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) cur…

INTRODUCTION: Without adequate muscle function as the dynamic elbow stabilizer, in a patient with a neuromuscular disorder, such as primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), the osteoligamentous structures are the only elbow stabilizers. To provide elbow stability, these structures should be restored.
CASE: A 30-year-old female with PLS suffered from pain and dysfunction of her elbow after a previous elbow injury and current elbow dislocation.
MANAGEMENT AND OUTCOMES: We performed an arthroscopic lateral collateral ligament repair. At 6 months postoperative, her elbow gained stability and a painless

UNLABELLED: Traumatic instability of the elbow is a common problem among patients presenting to emergency departments. As recurrent instability is more common than previously thought and the knowledge of the most frequent underlying causes increases, treatment of elbow instability is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Therefore, it is mandatory for the radiologist to be familiar with the important osseous and soft-tissue stabilisers of the elbow joint and to know the pathomechanisms that lead to a spectrum of joint instability. This article discusses the relevant anatomy in elbow stability w…

Elbow arthroscopy has become an indispensable method of surgical care of injuries and their consequences and damages that affect the elbow. The advantages of elbow arthroscopy in comparison to classical open surgery are multiple. Primarily, arthroscopy allows an excellent view of intra-articular structures and thus a detailed overview of the entire joint which enables us to perform complete surgery without opening the joint. Furthermore, morbidity is significantly smaller, rehabilitation is faster, and return to daily activities is also faster. Basic requirements for successful application of

Post-traumatic joint stiffness (PTJS) of the elbow is a debilitating condition that poses unique treatment challenges. While previous research has implicated capsular tissue in PTJS, much regarding the development and progression of this condition remains unknown. The objective of this study was to develop an animal model of post-traumatic elbow contracture and evaluate its potential for studying the etiology of PTJS. The Long-Evans rat was identified as the most appropriate species/breed for development due to anatomical and functional similarities to the human elbow joint. Two surgical proto…

CASE: A 37-year-old man presented with an absent right elbow joint secondary to trauma, subsequent ankylosis, total elbow arthroplasty (TEA), and TEA explantation after infection. The patient also had a contralateral complete brachial plexus injury, but an intact elbow joint. Given that the patient had a functional right hand/wrist, composite vascularized autograft elbow transplant was performed from left to right upper extremity. Four years postoperatively, the patient could independently complete activities of daily living.
CONCLUSION: This case is the first to report composite vascularized…

Elbow incongruity plays an important role in the development of elbow dysplasia and its diagnosis can be challenging. The objectives of this systematic review were to discuss elbow biomechanics and recent advances in the assessment of incongruity, to revise the diagnostic protocols suggested, debate advantages and disadvantages of measurements proposed to characterize the joint and improve screening. In spite of advances in the understanding of elbow incongruity, the exact mechanisms involved are not fully elucidated. The elbow is a complex joint and structures in contact differ in different ph

BACKGROUND: Epicondylosis of the elbow are common pathologies, with a higher incidence for radial epicondylosis. Approximately 90% are self-limiting under conservative treatment.
TREATMENT: Multiple surgical procedures exist for the treatment of refractory cases. Arthroscopic treatment has been described for both radial and medial pathologies. Open and arthroscopic procedures show equivalent results in the surgical treatment of radial epicondylosis. This paper describes the most common open surgical procedures for the treatment of radial epicondylosis. Furthermore, the pros and cons of the ar

Stiffness is a clinical disorder that affects the patient's function of the entire upper limb. Many classifications systems have been developed for elbow stiffness based on the plane of motion, severity, aetiology, prognosis or anatomical location. A new classification, the Stiffness types and Influencing Factors Classification System, is proposed as a treatment algorithm to guide the surgical treatment and the preferred operative approach (open or arthroscopic).

Arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee has become increasingly utilized due to continued advancements in technique, training, and instrumentation. In addition, arthroscopy is generally safe and effective in the utilization of joint preservation surgical techniques. The arthroscopist must utilize a thorough understanding of the surgical anatomy, detailed care with patient positioning, and safe instrumentation portals to prevent associated neurological injury. In the event of postoperative neurological complications, the physician must carefully document the patient history and physic

In cubarthritis-osteoarthritis of the elbow-surgical procedures may be considered to debride the elbow joint to reduce pain, to increase mobility, and to postpone joint replacement surgery. The ulnohumeral arthroplasty as described by Outerbridge and Kashiwagi was originally introduced to debride both anterior and posterior elbow compartments through a direct posterior mini-open approach. To achieve this, a distal humeral fenestration throughout the humeral fossa is performed. Although with an elbow arthroscopy, a technique that was obviously developed later on, all compartments can be easily …

OBJECTIVE: Aim of surgical treatment is the primary stabilization of the unstable elbow following a ligamentous elbow dislocation.
INDICATIONS: Ligamentous elbow dislocations are typically accompanied by injuries to the surrounding musculature and collateral ligaments of the elbow joint. Surgical treatment is indicated in case of failure of nonoperative therapy, i.e., when a dislocation can only be prevented in immobilization > 90° and pronation of the elbow or an active muscular centering of the elbow fails after 5-7 days.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Contraindications for a solely "internal bracing"…

BACKGROUND: An extension deficit of the elbow joint can be caused by various pathologies such as arthroliths, posttraumatic scar tissues, synovitis, capsular fibrosis of the anterior joint compartment, osteophytes in the area of the olecranon fossa or osteochondral lesions (OCL). Arthroscopic treatment is a good therapeutic option for theses pathologies.
OBJECTIVE: We performed a standardized elbow arthroscopy in the case of an 18-year old male roofer presented with an extension deficit of 5° which had existed for several years. As physical activity, the patient performed boxing and BMX bicyc…

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic elbow arthritis in young adults is a rare yet challenging condition, presenting primarily with progressive pain and stiffness that limits functional activities. Achieving a functional, low-pain elbow joint with future treatment options is essential for younger, active patients. Unlike total elbow arthroplasty (TEA), which is prone to loosening in young patients, interposition arthroplasty (IA) offers bone preservation, pain reduction, and improved joint function.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old male presented with four years of right elbow pain and stiffness follo…

OBJECTIVE: We conducted ultrasonography (US) examination for asymptomatic elbow injuries in judo athletes to confirm availability of US screening for elbow.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and thirty-two black belts in judo (85 males and 47 females; mean age, 20.0 ± 1.6 years) participated in this screening. Forty-eight participants had a history of elbow injury (elbow-injury group), and 84 did not (no-elbow-injury group). All participants completed a survey in the form of a questionnaire. Subsequently, US scanning of both elbows was performed.
RESULTS: The maximal thickness of the medial
