BACKGROUND AND AIMS:: The course of isolated serratus palsy is difficult to predict, especially if, in initial electromyographic examination, long thoracic nerve function is totally absent. How initial electromyography correlates with long-term outcome of isolated serratus palsy is unknown. We evaluated initial electromyographic examinations of isolated serratus palsy patients and compared these to their long-term outcome. We hypothesized that long-term outcome after electromyographic examination-verified partial nerve injuries is better than that seen in cases of total nerve injuries.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of otitis media is related to Eustachian tube dysfunction. The tensor veli palatini muscle actively opens the Eustachian tube and promotes middle-ear ventilation. This study describes a technique for paratubal electromyography that uses a surface, non-invasive electrode able to record tensor veli palatini muscle activity during swallowing.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study evaluates finger flexion and extension strengthening exercises using elastic resistance in chronic stroke patients.
METHODS: Eighteen stroke patients (mean age: 56.8 ± 7.6 years) with hemiparesis performed 3 consecutive repetitions of finger flexion and extension, using 3 different elastic resistance levels (easy, moderate, and hard).
