Vascular siderosis (VS) refers to the presence of mineralized small and medium-sized arteries in the globus pallidus, usually regarded as reflecting an aging process. In this study, energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry was used to quantify and localize iron in rat remnant kidneys (RK) and normal kidneys (NK) and to determine its pathophysiologic significance. Twelve patients underwent an osteosynthesis with titanium to treat upper and lower jaw fractures. Six to 12 months later, the miniplates were removed.
