Hybrid Brain-Computer Interface for Controlling a Wearable Lower Limb Exoskeleton With Augmented Reality Glasses for Gait Assistance.

Conventional crutch-based control for lower-limb exoskeletons often imposes a considerable physical burden and limits usability. To address these challenges, we developed a hybrid brain-computer interface (BCI) combining a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI with asynchronous biosignal-based switches triggered by a wink and teeth clench. Practical usability was improved by implementing a wearable headband-type biosignal-recording device to acquire electroencephalogra-phy, electromyography, and electrooculography signals. Augmented reality glasses were used to present visual …

Brain-Computer Interface-controlled Upper Limb Robotic System for Enhancing Daily Activities in Stroke Patients.

This study introduces a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)-controlled upper limb assistive robot for post-stroke rehabilitation. The system utilizes electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrooculogram (EOG) signals to help users assist upper limb function in everyday tasks while interacting with a robotic hand. We evaluated the effectiveness of this BCI-robot system using the Berlin Bimanual Test for Stroke (BeBiTS), a set of 10 daily living tasks involving both hands. Eight stroke patients participated in this study, but only four participants could adapt to the BCI robot system training and perform

Efficiency of visual information processing in children at-risk for dyslexia: habituation of single-trial ERPs.

To investigate underlying learning mechanisms in relation to the development of dyslexia, event-related potentials to visual standards were recorded in five-year-old pre-reading children at-risk for familial dyslexia (n=24) and their controls (n=14). At the end of second grade the children aged 8 years were regrouped into three groups according to literacy level and risk factor. Single-trial analyses revealed N1 habituation in the normal-reading controls, but not in the normal-reading at-risks, and a N1 amplitude increase in the group of poor-reading at-risks and poor-reading controls. No P3 h

Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex contribution to abnormalities of the P300 component of the event-related potential in schizophrenia.

Abnormalities of the P300 component of the event-related potential are a common finding in schizophrenia. It seems possible that the dysfunction in the dorsolateral prefrontal (DLPF) region that has been reported in schizophrenia contributes to this finding. To explore this possibility, we calculated the relationship between, on the one hand, P300 latency and amplitude and, on the other hand, the degree of DLPF atrophy (as measured by magnetic resonance imaging) and metabolic activity during an attentional task (as measured by positron emission tomography). Seventeen schizophrenia patients wit

Active high-frequency vestibulo-ocular reflex and seasickness susceptibility.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The vestibular autorotation test (VAT) examines responses to active head oscillations at frequencies between 2 and 6 Hz in the horizontal and vertical planes while the subject is fixating a visible target. At these frequencies, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is the main source of eye movement for ocular stabilization, although other visual and somatosensory information interacts with the response. Because the neural mismatch theory places emphasis on multimodal sensory interactions as the cause of motion sickness, using the VAT, which measures eye movements resulting

Interobserver variability in recognizing arousal in respiratory sleep disorders.

Daytime sleepiness is a common consequence of repeated arousal in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Arousal indices are sometimes used to make decisions on treatment, but there is no evidence that arousals are detected similarly even by experienced observers. Using the American Sleep Disorders Association (ASDA) definition of arousal in terms of the accompanying electroencephalogram (EEG) changes, we have quantified interobserver agreement for arousal scoring and identified factors affecting it. Ten patients with suspected OSA were studied; three representative EEG events during each of light, sl

Optokinetic nystagmus correlates with severity of vection-induced motion sickness and gastric tachyarrhythmia.

PURPOSE: The present study investigated the relationship of the frequency of nystagmus to the severity of optokinetic rotation-induced motion sickness. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighty-seven subjects viewed a vertically striped, rotating drum for 16 min. Subjects' electrooculograms, ratings of vection, and subjective symptoms of motion sickness (SSMS) were measured during the drum rotation period. Subjects' electrogastrograms (EGGs) were recorded throughout the baseline and drum rotation periods. The ratios of the spectral intensity of EGG 4-9 cycles per minute (cpm) between drum rotation and base

Optokinetic reflex in squirrel monkeys after long-term monocular deprivation.

Horizontal optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) as well as neuronal response properties in the nucleus of the optic tract and the dorsal terminal nucleus of the accessory optic system (NOT-DTN) were investigated in three monocularly deprived squirrel monkeys. In two monkeys occlusion of one eye was performed at birth (early) and in the third after 7 weeks (late). In adulthood, in early deprived monkeys monocular horizontal OKN tested through the non-deprived eye was symmetrical and in no way different from normal, i.e. stimulation in the temporonasal and nasotemporal direction elicited equal and robust

Subjective estimates of sleep differ from polysomnographic measurements in obstructive sleep apnea patients.

It is well established that, as a group, insomnia patients overestimate sleep onset latency (SOL) and underestimate total sleep time (TST) when compared to objective polysomnographic (PSG) findings. Whether a similar phenomenon occurs with other sleep disorders is not fully established. We compared the PSG sleep of 84 patients with suspected sleep apnea (SA) to their subjective experience of sleep reported on a sleep diary the morning after PSG testing. Both patients with SA (SA+) and those without (SA-) tended to overestimate SOL, but the SA+ group (n = 50) made larger overestimations (p < 0.

The effect of uvulonodular lesions on horizontal optokinetic nystagmus and optokinetic after-nystagmus in cats.

The effect of uvulonodular lesions on horizontal optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN) was investigated in alert cats. A lesion in each of 6 cats was made by suction-ablation under anesthesia. In the 3 cats with only a uvular lesion, both the initial slow phase velocity and the time constant of OKAN were unchanged. In the remaining 3 cats whose lesions included the nodulus as well as the uvula, the time constant of OKAN was markedly prolonged, but the initial slow phase velocity of OKAN was not affected. The postoperative average time constant of OKAN increased fro

Detection of peripheral vestibular disorders by the pendular rotation test in cats.

Unilateral vestibular disorders were induced in 3 cats by means of the injection of a small amount of sodium hydroxide into the middle ear, and vestibulo-ocular responses (VOR) to various kinds of pendular stimulation were investigated at 1 week and at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 months after the operation. The pendular rotation test was performed at frequencies of 0.025, 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5 Hz, and peak velocities of 50, 100, 150, and 200 degrees/s, and the directional preponderance of the VOR gain (DP%) was measured using a computer. DP% 1 week after the operation was still very high at each frequency a

[SIDAS 2010: mobile 10-channel unit for the diagnosis of sleep-related respiratory disorders].

At the moment diagnosis of sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) is carried out in specialised clinical centres with well-equipped sleep laboratories. Since there are only few of these in Germany, medical care in this field is not sufficient at all even if applied only to high-risk patients. To cope with the large number of patients with severe SRBD we developed a mobile 10-channel unit (SIDAS 2010) designed for diagnosing SRBD even outside the conventional sleep laboratories. In this study we investigated 108 patients who after using the 4-channel recorder presented signs and symptoms sugg

[The 1-hour oxycardiorespirography as routine study in the diagnosis of cardiorespiratory dysregulation in infancy--an attempt at establishing normal values].

Because of the growing demand to evaluate cardiorespiratory dysfunctions the short-time oxycardiorespirography becomes a more and more important and powerful tool in the daily clinical routine. Therefore, from about one hour lasting records we studied the distribution of MA-values (mean apnea duration), duration of the longest apnea, percentage of periodic breathing time, lowest heart rate values, lowest transcutaneous PO2 values and highest transcutaneous PCO2 values in an obstetrical optimal low-risk group of 90 infants and a obstetrical non-optimal group of 152 infants between four and ten

[The obsessive-compulsive syndrome: reflection of fronto-caudate dysregulation of the left hemisphere?].

Neuropsychological studies of the obsessional syndrome reveal bilateral frontal dysfunction. Early onset is characteristic of males, who have a more chronic course than females, and who are more often non-dextral. Hypermetabolic activity of the frontal and caudate, bilaterally, is found in most PET investigations, although one report is of relative hypofrontality and global cortical hypometabolism for absolute values. Given the frequency with which basal ganglia disease leads to obsessive-compulsive phenomena (Cf Sydenham's Chorea, Gilles de La Tourette) and frontal lobe inertia, a perturbatio

[Macular vitelliform degeneration in adults. Retrospective study of a series of 85 patients].

Since 1974 (Gass), many publications have referred to a macular abnormality that is similar to Best's vitelliform dystrophy, but occurs in adults and shows a normal or subnormal electro-oculogram. In our retrospective study, 85 patients with adult macular vitelliform degeneration were included; 31 patients out of 85 have been followed-up for periods ranging from one to ten years. Women (62,3%) were predominantly affected; the median age was 61 years (ranging from 37 to 81 years); family history did not reveal others affected members except in one case (mother and her son affected); electro-ocu

The effects of fixation and restricted visual field on vection-induced motion sickness.

Approximately 60% of healthy human subjects experience motion sickness when exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of certain visual factors on susceptibility to motion sickness. Vection data (illusory self-motion), horizontal eye movement recordings, subjective motion sickness report, and a measure of gastric myoelectric activity (electrogastrogram, EGG) were obtained from 45 subjects, who were randomly divided into the following three groups: a control group that observed the entire visual field with no fixation, a group that fix

Effects of a visual-vestibular stimulus on the vestibulo-ocular reflex.

Exposure before flight to an environment that provides altered visual-vestibular relationships similar to those seen in weightlessness might facilitate adaptation to spaceflight. Fifteen normal subjects were exposed for 0, 5, and 20 min to an abnormal visual-vestibular environment in which the vestibular sensation of lateral tilt was associated with the visual impression of lateral translation. Lateral eye movement elicited by similar tilt in darkness was measured before and at intervals after the exposure. Of the 15 subjects, 12 showed increased VOR amplitude following the exposure, but this

Induction of periodic breathing during sleep causes upper airway obstruction in humans.

To test the hypothesis that occlusive apneas result from sleep-induced periodic breathing in association with some degree of upper airway compromise, periodic breathing was induced during non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep by administering hypoxic gas mixtures with and without applied external inspiratory resistance (9 cmH2O X l-1 X s) in five normal male volunteers. In addition to standard polysomnography for sleep staging and respiratory pattern monitoring, esophageal pressure, tidal volume (VT), and airflow were measured via an esophageal catheter and pneumotachograph, respectively, with t
