AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To identify, review and critically evaluate published empirical studies concerned with the prevalence, management and support for survivors of domestic violence and abuse who present at emergency department.
BACKGROUND: Domestic violence and abuse is a global phenomenon with a wealth of studies that explore the different aspects of the issue including the economic, social and health effects on survivors and on society as a whole. Emergency department is widely recognised as one healthcare facility where domestic violence and abuse survivors will often disclose domestic vi

Acute ataxia in a pediatric patient poses a diagnostic dilemma for any physician. While the most common etiologies are benign, occasional individuals require urgent intervention. Children with stroke, toxic ingestion, infection, and neuro-inflammatory disorders frequently exhibit ataxia as an essential-if not the only-presenting feature. The available retrospective research utilize inconsistent definitions of acute ataxia, precluding the ability to pool data from these studies. No prospective data exist that report on patients presenting to the emergency department with ataxia. This review exa

At 1251 h on Feb 22, 2011, an earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand, causing widespread destruction. The only regional acute hospital was compromised but was able to continue to provide care, supported by other hospitals and primary care facilities in the city. 6659 people were injured and 182 died in the initial 24 h. The massive peak ground accelerations, the time of the day, and the collapse of major buildings contributed to injuries, but the proximity of the hospital to the central business district, which was the most affected, and the provision of good medical care based on careful

Trauma is the leading cause of maternal death in the United States. Nurses must optimize the well-being of 2 patients in the pregnant trauma patient. Rapid assessment, initiating immediate interventions for life-threatening injuries, and transport to a trauma center are critical to optimize maternal and fetal outcome. Understanding these factors can facilitate an effective resuscitation and optimize the outcome for both mother and baby.

The relationship between weather conditions and psychiatric disorders has been a continuous subject of speculation due to contradictory findings. This study attempts to further clarify this relationship by focussing on specific conditions such as panic attacks and non-panic anxiety in relation to specific meteorological variables. All psychiatric emergencies attended at a general hospital in Barcelona (Spain) during 2002 with anxiety as main complaint were classified as panic or non-panic anxiety according to strict independent and retrospective criteria. Both groups were assessed and compared

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to analyse the types of calls attended by the authors in their ambulance, assigned to one sector of the urban area of Prato.
METHODS: We analysed 1060 consecutive calls carried out by our ambulance; 33 calls (3.1%), cancelled for various reasons, were excluded from statistical analysis. The calls regarded 1027 patients, 549 (53.5%) males and 478 (46.5%) females.
RESULTS: 46% of calls concerned non trauma cases, 17% trauma cases and 7.2% transfers between hospitals. Calls in the non trauma group were for dyspnea (16.7%), unconsciousness (16.6%), ch

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the type of household is associated with prognosis at one year in patients ≥65 years of age discharged after medical consultation requiring emergency department care.
METHODS: Data from the Emergency Department and Elder Needs (EDEN) cohort were used. This retrospective cohort included all patients ≥65 years of age seen in 52 Spanish emergency departments over one week (April 1-7, 2019) in whom the type of household was recorded and categorized as living at home alone, with relatives, with professional caregivers, or in a nursing home. Patient demographic and

OBJECTIVE: Racial, gender, and socioeconomic status have been shown to impact the delivery of care. How this impacts the management of hypertensive crisis remains unclear. We aim to identify disparities on admission frequency and length of stay (LOS) among those presenting with hypertensive crisis, as a function of household income.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis of 2016 emergency department visits and supplemental inpatient data from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample. Median household income quartiles were established. A multivariable logistic regression model was used

BACKGROUND: Mental illness in people experiencing homelessness is common and a key reason for attendance at emergency departments and admission to hospital.
AIMS: This paper describes how the KHP Pathway homeless team impacted use and cost of health and wider services. The Pathway model had never been adopted by a mental health hospital, and there had never been an economic analysis to evaluate service use before and after intervention.
METHOD: Service use was measured using an adapted version of the Client Service Receipt Inventory (CSRI) with a simple before and after design at admission,

Background and AimsPulmonary embolism (PE) is a frequent and potentially fatal diagnosis in the emergency department (ED). The Pulmonary Embolism Rule-out Criteria (PERC), an eight-item clinical decision rule used to identify patients at very low risk of pulmonary embolism, is widely applied to exclude PE in low-risk patients; however, its real-world diagnostic performance and impact on imaging utilization remain incompletely defined. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of PERC and its effect on reducing computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) use.Material

Changes in cognition, attention, consciousness, and perception rapidly occurring and unpredictably evolving are the distinctive hallmarks of delirium syndrome. In Mexico the incidence is reported to be 12%. In our study, subject of the quoted letter to the editor, there were included 169 patients over 65 years of age, to which the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) questionnaire was administered upon admission to the Emergency Department and 24 hours after admission to confirm or exclude a diagnosis of delirium. An incidence of 43.8% was reported, with no statistically significant association f

INTRODUCTION: Climate change represents one of the most significant global health threats, with emergency departments (ED) serving as frontline responders to climate-related health emergencies. While EDs are major contributors to healthcare's environmental footprint and critical responders for climate disasters, no comprehensive review has examined sustainability and climate-resilience initiatives specifically implemented in ED settings.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review examining literature on sustainable and climate-resilient measures in EDs. Comprehensive searches of PubMed, Scopus, a

Sports-related concussions are common during athletic events. Prompt recognition and diagnosis at the time of impact are crucial to prevent additional injury. Sideline screening and comprehensive evaluation using multimodal tools, such as the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool, can help identify at-risk athletes. Once a concussed player is identified or when a diagnosis is unclear, the athlete must be removed from further play. Severe cases should be referred to an emergency department or urgent care setting. Providing anticipatory guidance can help reduce the risk of additional brain injury and

Diphtheria has re-emerged in Australia in 2026, prompting significant public health concern and placing additional demands on healthcare services. This article examines the early phase of the outbreak, with particular focus on its impact on EDs. The outbreak has disproportionately affected Indigenous communities, highlighting the influence of social determinants of health, geographical isolation, skin infections and waning vaccine-induced immunity on disease transmission and outcomes. Emergency clinicians faced challenges in identifying suspected cases due to the overlap of diphtheria presenta

Traumatic intra-abdominal hemorrhage contributes to mortality in patients with trauma. However, initiating an emergent laparotomy in the operating room (OR) as a standard treatment can sometimes be time-consuming. To overcome this issue, laparotomy is performed in the emergency room (ER) in some institutions. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of performing ER laparotomy. Comprehensive searches were conducted in MEDLINE PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases, up to August 9, 2024. The risk of bias in observational studies was assessed using the ROBINS-I tool. The primary outcome was

Off-label prescribing, the use of medications outside of approved indications, is a common practice in pediatric emergency medicine. This practice is driven by factors such as limited pediatric-specific clinical trial data, regulatory hurdles, and the urgent need to treat critically ill children. While off-label prescribing can be lifesaving, it raises significant ethical and legal concerns. This article explores the prevalence, challenges, and potential consequences of off-label drug use in pediatric emergency departments. A case study illustrates the complexities of off-label prescribing in
