IMPORTANCE: Previous studies have suggested an association between surgical volume and patient outcomes for parathyroid surgery. However, most previous studies are relatively small and the literature is dominated by studies form the US, which might not be readily generalizable to other settings.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate volume-outcome associations for parathyroid surgery in England.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cohort study that included all National Health Service hospital trusts in England with secondary analysis of administrative data using International Statistical Classification

Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GK) is an effective treatment for hypothalamic hamartoma. No precise data are available on the risk of endocrine side effects of this treatment. In this study, 34 patients with hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) were followed prospectively at the Department of Endocrinology, La Timone Hospital, Marseille, France, for a mean follow-up of >2 years (mean ± standard deviation [SD] 3.6 ± 2 years). Initial pre- and post-GK radiosurgery evaluations were performed, including weight, body mass index (BMI), and a complete endocrinological workup. At diagnosis, eight patients presented

INTRODUCTION: Combined pancreatic-duodenal injuries in blunt abdominal trauma are rare. These injuries are associated with high morbidity and mortality, and their emergent management is a challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of combined complete pancreatic (through the neck) and duodenal (first part) transections in a 24-year-old male secondary to blunt abdominal trauma following a motor vehicle crash. The duodenal stumps were closed separately and a gastrojejunostomy performed for intestinal continuity. The transacted head of pancreas main duct was suture ligated and parenchyma was

Therapy of chronic pancreatitis rests on five arms: Avoidance of alcohol, treatment of pain, replacement therapy for exocrine and endocrine insufficiency and adequate nutrition. Alcohol withdrawal improves pain and the patient's compliance. It also seems to retard the chronic inflammatory process. Therapy of pain depends on the pathomechanism of pain. There is a lack of prospective, controlled studies comparing various treatment regimens. Thus, treatment options are partly dependent on the experience of the physician taking care of the patient and include i.e. for pseudocysts: surgical vs perc

Diagnosis in cryptorchidism should be as early as possible for therapeutical purposes and for the achievement of most positive results. Early but also exact diagnosis allows a selective therapy concerning type of procedure and age of performance. Aims of early diagnosis and selected treatment are: prevention of infertility and eventual decrease of androgenic endocrinal function in the adult; prevention of torsion in retractile testis; prevention of trauma in perineal ectopic situation; prevention of cancer especially in cryptorchidism of the adult; prevention of psychogenic defects of the empt

BACKGROUND: Craniopharyngioma is a common intracranial tumor located in the sellar-suprasellar region. Due to the involvement of adjacent structures, it can lead to increased intracranial pressure, visual impairment, and endocrine deficiencies. Surgical resection is the primary treatment, but it is a tough challenge to achieve total resection, which will led to the frequency of recurrences and progressions. Among them, distant spread is extremely rare, but important complication, identifying and providing proper therapy, is crucial.
METHODS: We report two cases of ectopic recurrence craniopha

Stricture of pancreatic-enteric anastomoses is a major late complication of a pancreaticoduodenectomy for the treatment of a periampullary tumor and can lead to exocrine and endocrine insufficiency such as malnutrition and diabetes mellitus. We investigated the safety and efficacy of a biodegradable tubular stent (BTS) for preventing a pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) anastomotic stricture in both a rat and porcine model. The BTS was manufactured using a terpolymer comprising poly p-dioxanone, trimethylene carbonate, and glycolide. A cohort of 42 rats was randomized into 7 groups of 6 animals each

BACKGROUND: Successful surgical management of primary hyperparathyroidism (1 degree HPT) historically has required bilateral neck exploration. The intraoperative parathyroid hormone (IO-PTH) assay allows a more limited procedure by confirming complete removal of hypersecreting tissue.
METHODS: Plasma samples were obtained from 130 consecutive patients both before (preincision and preexcision baselines) and at approximately 5 and 10 minutes (and additional times) after removal of abnormal parathyroid tissue. Samples were assayed for IO-PTH by a rapid, two-site immunochemiluminescent assay (ICM

BACKGROUND: Solitary intracranial hypothalamic mass occurs rarely. The etiological diagnosis of solitary hypothalamus lesion is challenging and often unachievable. Although previous studies indicated that lesions affecting the hypothalamus often cause significant metabolic disorders, few reports about the metabolic disturbances of patients with solitary hypothalamic mass have been reported.
METHOD: Twenty-five patients with solitary hypothalamus lesions who had been evaluated and treated in Huashan Hospital from January 2010 to December 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. The clinical manifes

PURPOSE: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by one or more hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands. Definitive surgical treatment demands precise preoperative localisation of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue. The purpose of our study is to assess the value of 18F-fluorocholine positron emission tomography (PET/CT) in preoperative localisation of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in patients with biochemically confirmed pHPT and negative or inconclusive cervical ultrasonography and 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study included

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a radioguided approach allows a higher intraoperative detection rate of adenoma and a minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP), with the same or better cure rate of hyperparathyroidism secondary to parathyroid adenoma.
METHODS: This was an observational, prospective, single-center study involving 254 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, between 2017 and 2022. A total of 258 procedures were performed: 129 non radioguided (NRS) and 129 radioguided (RS) (112 with intravenous 99mTc- MIBI and 17 with ultrasound-guided intralesional 99mTc-MAA injec

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH) leads to a series of deleterious effects that can be especially in complex procedures such as liver transplant. The implementation of a protocol is key to ensure the patient's normothermia.
METHODS: A cohort of 209 patients who underwent liver transplant in a tertiary hospital in a period between January 2016 and December 2018 was retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1, patients with normothermia (core body temperature ≥ 36°C) and group 2, patients with hypothermia (core body temperature < 36°C). Morta

BACKGROUND: Insulinomas are small, solitary and benign endocrine pancreatic tumours, causing organic hyperinsulinism by autonomous insulin-secretion. Episodes of severe hypoglycemia and progressive obesity are the most frequent clinical signs. Surgical resection of the tumours is always indicated for cure. Because the tumours are small and surgical trauma for adequate exposure of the pancreas is considerable, laparoscopic techniques to approach these tumours are attractive. On the occasion of two cases, this report describes the laparoscopic treatment of these rare tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Brown tumors are rare benign osteolytic lesions resulting from prolonged primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism. Their clinical and radiological presentation may mimic aggressive bone neoplasms, often leading to delayed diagnosis and unnecessary orthopedic interventions.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of female patients aged 75 and 65 years who presented with large lytic lesions of the tibia and fibula. One patient developed a pathological fracture, while the other presented with a painful mass. Laboratory studies in both cases revealed hypercalcemia, elevated parathyr

Total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) is an established and effective treatment modality for patients diagnosed with intractable chronic pancreatitis (CP) and recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP). TPIAT primarily aims to manage debilitating pain leading to impaired quality of life among patients with CP or RAP, which can be successfully managed with medical, endoscopic, or surgical interventions. TPIAT is significantly successful in relieving pain associated with CP and improving health-related quality of life outcomes. Furthermore, the complete loss of pancreatic endocrine

BACKGROUND: The usefulness of incorporating near-infrared autofluorescence into the surgical workflow of endocrine surgeons is unclear. Our aim was to develop a prospective registry and gather expert opinion on appropriate use of this technology.
METHODS: This was a prospective multicenter collaborative study of patients undergoing thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy at 7 academic centers. A questionnaire was disseminated among 24 participating surgeons.
RESULTS: Overall, 827 thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy procedures were entered into registry: 42% of surgeons found near-infrared autofl

Parenchyma-sparing pancreatic surgery (PSPS) is a patient-centered alternative to traditional radical resections for benign and low-grade pancreatic lesions. Unlike pancreaticoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy, which tend to cause long-term exocrine and endocrine deficiency, PSPS aims to preserve functional tissue with a guarantee of oncologic safety. Techniques such as enucleation, central pancreatectomy, duodenum-preserving head resection, and uncinectomy are illustrative of this equipoise, with less risk of new-onset diabetes and malabsorption but more short-term morbidity in the form

INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that penile length is negatively correlated to the degree of hypospadias; however, there are no studies in the literature actually comparing penile length in normal patients and patients with hypospadias.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Between January and May 2011, we measured penile length in two groups of children aged up to 5 years. The first group comprised all boys admitted for hypospadias (40 patients; 25 distal and 15 proximal hypospadias). The control group comprised 100 boys seen for other surgical procedures excluding those with endocrine disorders. We meas
