Right ventricular inefficiency in repaired tetralogy of Fallot: proof of concept for energy calculations from cardiac MRI data.

Repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF) patients develop right ventricular (RV) dilatation and dysfunction. To prevent their demise, pulmonary valve replacement is necessary, though appropriate timing for it is challenged by a paucity of reliable diagnostic parameters. In this pilot study, we hypothesized that stroke work (SW) and energy calculations would delineate the inefficiency of RV performance in rTOF. RV SW was calculated for both an rTOF and a normal subject by utilizing RV pressure and volume measurements obtained during cardiac catheterization and MRI studies. Energy transfer rate and r…

The obligate need for accuracy in reporting preclinical studies relevant to clinical trials: autologous germline mitochondrial supplementation for assisted human reproduction as a case study.

A now large body of work has solidified the central role that mitochondria play in oocyte development, fertilization, and embryogenesis. From these studies, a new technology termed autologous germline mitochondrial energy transfer was developed for improving pregnancy success rates in assisted reproduction. Unlike prior clinical studies that relied on the use of donor, or nonautologous, mitochondria for microinjection into eggs of women with a history of repeated in vitro fertilization failure to enhance pregnancy success, autologous germline mitochondrial energy transfer uses autologous mitoc…

Small molecule probes as versatile energy acceptors: A breakthrough in photoelectrochemical sensing for sulfur dioxide recording in rat brain.

Microelectrode-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing is a newly developed and promising analytical technique for in vivo analysis. However, the inadequate specificity in complex environment of living bodies restricted its further in vivo application. Herein, we utilized a small molecule probe as the energy acceptor to quench the photocurrent of CdTe quantum dots through energy transfer. The efficiency of energy transfer was modulated by the concentration of target SO2, resulting in changes in photocurrent. The chemical recognition reaction between small molecule probes and SO2 enhanced the …

Charge-Transfer Exciton Formation by Designing Donor-Acceptor Motifs for Polymeric-Semiconductor-Based Photocatalytic Singlet Oxygen Production.

Metal-free polymeric semiconductors exhibit substantial potential in attaining photocatalytic solar energy conversion via exciton-based energy transfer, whereas their inefficient triplet-exciton yields caused by faint spin-orbit coupling set limits to the relevant applications. Here, we present an alternative pathway for harvesting long-lived triplet excitons in polymeric photocatalysts, where a charge-transfer exciton (CTE), rather than an intrinsic Frenkel exciton, hosted in donor-acceptor motifs is employed for triggering energy-transfer-mediated photocatalysis. By taking polymeric carbon n…

Regardless of solvent, all the fullerodendrimers exhibit ultrafast OPV-->C60 singlet energy transfer. In CH2Cl2, the OPV-->C60 electron transfer from the lowest fullerene singlet level ((1)C60*) is slightly exergonic (deltaG(CS) approximately = 0.07 eV), but is observed, to an increasing extent, only in the largest systems C60G2-C60G4 with lower ac …

Metal complexes as photochemical nitric oxide precursors: potential applications in the treatment of tumors.

The bioregulatory molecule NO plays key roles in cancer biology and has been implicated in both tumor growth and suppression. Furthermore, it is a gamma-radiation sensitizer that may enhance selective killing of neoplastic tissues. For these reasons, there is considerable interest in developing methods for NO delivery to specific physiological targets. In this Perspective, we describe ongoing investigations focused on photochemical methodologies to deliver therapeutic doses of NO to such targets utilizing transition metal complexes that are nitric oxide precursors. The photochemical strategy h

Mechanical power and efficiency of level walking with different stride rates.

Walking humans prefer to use the stride rate that results in the lowest rate of metabolic energy expenditure. Mechanical power requirements have been suggested to underlie the metabolic response, but mechanical power is consistently reported to be minimal at stride rates 20-30% lower than preferred. This may be due to limitations in how total mechanical power has been computed, as well as a failure to account for the efficiency with which muscular work is done. We investigated how mechanical power and efficiency depend on stride rate in walking, with both quantities computed from the work done

Entropy is an important design principle in the photosystem II supercomplex.

Photosystem II (PSII) can achieve near-unity quantum efficiency of light harvesting in ideal conditions and can dissipate excess light energy as heat to prevent the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light stress. Understanding how this pigment-protein complex accomplishes these opposing goals is a topic of great interest that has so far been explored primarily through the lens of the system energetics. Despite PSII's known flat energy landscape, a thorough consideration of the entropic effects on energy transfer in PSII is lacking. In this work, we aim to discern the free energe…

A Step-by-Step Protocol for Quantifying Molecular Forces in Living Cells Using the Vinculin TSMod FRET Tension Sensor.

Genetically encoded FRET-based tension sensors provide a powerful approach for visualizing and quantifying molecular forces within living cells. These probes incorporate an extensible, calibrated elastic linker between a donor-acceptor fluorophore pair, enabling mechanical load changes to be reported as variations in FRET efficiency. This article presents a detailed, stepwise protocol for the expression, imaging, and quantitative analysis of the vinculin tension sensor (VinTS), which reports forces transmitted through vinculin within focal adhesions. The procedure describes optimized condition

Mechanical energy absorption in human hand-arm exposed to sinusoidal vibration.

A possible basis for risk assessment of human exposure to vibration when using hand-held tools may be to determine the amount of mechanical energy that is absorbed by the hand-arm system. The aim of this investigation was to study the absorption of mechanical energy in the human hand-arm system during exposure to sinusoidal vibration within the frequency range of 20 to 1500 Hz. A handle, specially designed for this type of experiments, was used during the measurements. The influence of various experimental conditions, such as three different hand-arm postures, grip force (25-75 N) and vibratio

Construction of microbial piezo/photo system for nitrate conversion to ammonium driven by the synergistic effect of hydraulic kinetic and light energy.

Integrating photocatalytic materials with electroactive microorganisms presents a promising route for solar energy-driven bioconversion, but is limited by low efficiency and high charge transfer barriers. Herein, dual-functional Bi2WO6 nanosheets (as piezo/photocatalytic materials) capable of harvesting both hydraulic kinetic and light energy from the natural environment were combined with an electroactive bacterium of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 for constructing the Shewanella oneidensis MR-1/Bi2WO6 biohybrid system. This system was able to enhance the charge transfer efficiency and modulate t

Long-lived modulation of plasmonic absorption by ballistic thermal injection.

Light-matter interactions that induce charge and energy transfer across interfaces form the foundation for photocatalysis1,2, energy harvesting3 and photodetection4, among other technologies. One of the most common mechanisms associated with these processes relies on carrier injection. However, the exact role of the energy transport associated with this hot-electron injection remains unclear. Plasmon-assisted photocatalytic efficiencies can improve when intermediate insulation layers are used to inhibit the charge transfer5,6 or when off-resonance excitations are employed7, which suggests that…

Photodynamic therapy potential of thiol-stabilized CdTe quantum dot-group 3A phthalocyanine conjugates (QD-Pc).

Thiol stabilized CdTe quantum dot (QD) nanoparticles were synthesized in aqueous phase and were used as energy donors to tetra-triethyleneoxythia substituted aluminum, gallium and indium phthalocyanines through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Energy transfer occurred from the QDs to phthalocyanines upon photoexcitation of the QDs. An enhancement in efficiency of energy transfer with the nature of the carboxylic thiol stabilizer on the QDs was observed. As a result of the nanoparticle and the phthalocyanine mixing, the photoluminescence efficiency of the phthalocyanine moieties i…

Solvent-induced local environment effect in plasmonic catalysis.

Solvents are known to affect the local surface plasmon resonance of metal nanoparticles; however, how solvents can be used to manipulate the interfacial charge and energy transfer in plasmonic catalysis remains to be explored. Here, using NH3 decomposition on a Ru-doped Cu surface as an example, we report density functional theory (DFT) and delta self-consistent field (SCF) calculations, through which we investigate the effect of different protic solvent molecules on interfacial charge transfer by calculating excitation energy of an electronic transition between the metal and the molecular rea…

[2+2] Cycloaddition Sensitized by CsPbX3 Nanocrystals: Cooperative Effects of Driving Force and Exciton Confinement.

Energy-transfer-induced reactions enable efficient photochemical synthesis by harnessing long-lived triplet states that enhance stereoselectivity and suppress side reactions under mild excitation. Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), with rapid intersystem crossing and mild photoredox potentials, serve as highly effective triplet sensitizers. In NC-sensitized systems, energy transfer efficiency is primarily governed by the driving force and exciton confinement. To probe their individual and combined effects, we conducted a systematic study using CsPbX3 and 4-vinylbenzoic acid (4VBc) as a model sy…
