Erythema multiforme (EM) is a polymorphic, often recurring eruption caused by exposure to medication or various infections, notably herpes simplex virus (HSV). Understanding the pathogenesis of HSV-associated EM (HAEM) is essential for patient management. We suggest that HAEM results from the combination of viropathic effects mediated by HSV proteins, notably DNA polymerase (Pol), and an immunological reaction to viral antigens. Erythema Multiforme is an acute, self-limited inflammatory cutaneous disorder characterized by distinctive target lesions. Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is defined as severe erythema multiforme with mucosal involvement, visceral involvement, or both. Erythema multiforme is a florid mucocutaneous disease characterized by oral, cutaneous, and ocular manifestations. A 68-year-old woman with Hemophilus influenzae pneumonia experienced a bullous dermatosis. Further evaluation revealed bullous erythema multiforme of the minor type which resolved concurrently with treatment of the pneumonia. Clinicians should be aware that H. influenzae may be one of the bacterial agents known to cause erythema multiforme.

An eruptive form of erythema multiforme subsequent to BCG vaccination seen in a young Black nurse is reported. In a short review of the literature the author emphasizes that specific and nonspecific complications may occur after inoculation, but that the rare occurrence of these cutaneous manifestations cannot undermine the value of this preventive measure.
