Two groups of New Zealand albino rabbits were respectively exposed to 350 and 700 ppm of trichloroethylene (TRI) 4 hrs/day, 4 days/week for 12 weeks. Weekly, visual evoked potentials (VEP) recordings were obtained under mesopic condition. Blood samples were also collected weekly to determine the concentration of TRI and its metabolites. A very short latency trigeminal evoked potential (STEP) to electrical stimulation of the upper lip has been recorded from over the scalp. Both examination of trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials and testing trigeminal nerve involvements associated with various neurological diseases make it possible to objectively measure the sensitivity and correlation of clinical symptomatology with the electrophysiological parameters. This procedure is described as applied to patients with essential trigeminal neuralgia and the effect of retrogasserian thermocoagulation upon the studied parameters is analyzed.

Six cases of optic nerve head drusen ophthalmoscopically are reported. Five of these had pathological latencies of the P 100 potentials on VEP examination. Only three of the patients had subjective visual complaints; all six, however, had variable visual field defects. Optic nerve head drusen are an important differential diagnosis, which can be readily established especially in those younger patients who need neurological and ophthalmological examination because of visual disturbances and pathological VEP responses.

Median and posterior tibial somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were studied on 25 patients with pathologically proven intraspinal neoplasms, and the results were compared and correlated with the details of clinical examination and the information derived from magnetic resonance imaging (MR). The case in study is a 13-year-old male with tubercular granuloma in the optic chiasma, affecting the right optic nerve and causing temporary loss of vision in that eye. Evoked visual potentials are performed and a first examination reveals that loss of vision was preceded by an alteration of response through the right optical path. The physiopathology is discussed and an evolutionary study of the lesion is made, evaluating the usefulness of EVPs in the diagnosis and follow-up in these patients.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in a group of 22 children hospitalized for the treatment of severe malnutrition (kwashiorkor). Recordings were repeated after three weeks of treatment. The control group consisted of age- and sex-matched healthy infants. Visual potentials evoked by whole-field pattern reversal (PRVEP) are most frequently used for the diagnosis of damage of the optic nerve. Power spectral analysis (PSA) was performed on the visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to counterphased checkerboard stimuli from 98 eyes in 49 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 54 eyes of 27 normal volunteers. Attenuation of high frequency components of the transient visual evoked potential was found in 53% of MS patients and 4% of controls.
