Flaviviruses (genus Orthoflavivirus, family Flaviviridae) are positive-sense RNA viruses able to infect a wide range of hosts and are associated with disease in humans, domestic animals and wildlife; thus, they are considered a major global health concern. The sylvatic cycle is potentially linked with human outbreaks; therefore, it is essential to monitor and understand flavivirus infections in wildlife. Little is known about flaviviruses in cetaceans. To fill part of this knowledge gap, we surveyed for the presence of flavivirus RNA in tissues (brain, spleen, lung, kidney, lymph node, liver,

The lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is an under-investigated rodent-borne arenavirus primarily associated with its natural reservoir, the cosmopolitan rodent Mus musculus. Although widely distributed in mice worldwide, human cases are rare, likely under-reported, and often misdiagnosed. While typically asymptomatic or self-limiting, infection can progress to neurological disease, severe congenital outcomes, or fatal illness in transplant recipients. Despite its public health relevance, this study provides the first detection and characterization of LCMV in Brazil. We analyzed 236 rod

Part of Robert T. Leiper's (1881-1969) lasting legacy in medical helminthology is grounded on his pioneering work on schistosomiasis (Bilharzia). Having undertaken many expeditions to the tropics, his fascination with parasite life cycles typically allowed him to devise simple preventive measures that curtailed transmission. Building on his formative work with others in Africa and Asia, and again in Egypt in 1915, he elucidated the life cycles of African schistosomes. His mandate, then commissioned by the British War Office, was to prevent and break transmission of this disease in British troo

Specimens collected during the ANDEEP I and II expeditions revealed a number of new species of tanaidacean from the family Agathotanaidae. One new species of Metagathotanais (M. furcilla), two of Paragathotanais (P. diunguisus, P. triunguisus) and one of Paranarthrura, (P. coimbrai) are described in this study. Metagathotanais furcilla can be separated from all other species by the incomplete fusion of the pleonites and the presence of dorsodistal spines of the propodi of pereopods 4-6. Paragathotanais diunguisus can be separated from all other species by the pereopod propodi with numerous dis

Syphilis is a specific inflammation which is extremely difficult to clearly diagnose in archaeological material. The origin of this disease is unclear. Most proponents hold the view that it comes from America, and that it was transmitted to Europe by sailors travelling with Columbus. In addition to the thesis of the American origin of syphilis is a suggestion that a mild form of syphilis existed in Europe before Columbus' expeditions. This form, until the end of the fifteenth century, began to spread epidemics. In Poland, the first officially reported case of the disease was described in 1495.

The latitudinal gradient in species diversity is a central problem in ecology. Expeditions covering approximately 16°54' of longitude and 21°4' of latitude and eight Argentine phytogeographic regions provided thermal adaptation data for 64 species of cicadas. We test whether species diversity relates to the diversity of thermal environments within a habitat. There are general patterns of the thermal response values decreasing in cooler floristic provinces and decreasing maximum potential temperature within a habitat except in tropical forest ecosystems. Vertical stratification of the plant com

PURPOSE: During 5 days in January 1994, two visiting expatriate ophthalmologists performed extracapsular cataract surgery on 111 patients at a nonprofit hospital in Asia. The authors investigated the development of postoperative corneal edema.
METHODS: An epidemiologic and clinical investigation was undertaken by a review of clinical charts, interview of personnel involved, an examination and interview of patients who underwent surgery, and a laboratory simulation of the disinfection procedure used.
RESULTS: Follow-up was available on 58% of the patients. The attack rate was at least 37% and

Upper extremity acute limb ischemia (ALI) is a limb-threatening and potentially lethal pathology that is most commonly caused by vascular embolization. Outcomes of limb ischemia are time-sensitive due to the correlation between a longer time from symptom onset to intervention with a vastly higher risk of amputation. In this report, point of care ultrasound (POCUS) was utilized to rapidly diagnose a patient with a proximal right brachial artery embolic occlusion, prompting expedited surgical consultation and successful embolectomy. POCUS can provide a focused vascular examination of the limbs t

An outbreak of acute schistosomiasis occurred among a group of adventurers who took part in a rafting expedition on the Omo River in Ethiopia in November 1981. Six (55%) of the 11 members of the expedition experienced Schistosoma mansoni infection confirmed by stool examination. Five of these six had symptoms compatible with acute schistosomiasis. Eosinophilia was the most frequent sign of infection (five of six), and fever, the most common symptom (four of six). Despite medical evaluations, illnesses had remained undiagnosed until January 1982. This outbreak should alert physicians to the ris

Although Ernest Shackleton's Endurance Antarctic expedition of 1914 to 1916 is a famous epic of survival, the medical achievements of the two expedition doctors have received little formal examination. Marooned on Elephant Island after the expedition ship sank, Drs. Macklin and McIlroy administered a chloroform anesthetic to crew member Perce Blackborow to amputate his frostbitten toes. As the saturated vapor pressure of chloroform at 0°C is 71.5 mmHg and the minimum alveolar concentration is 0.5% of sea-level atmospheric pressure (3.8 mmHg), it would have been feasible to induce anesthesia at

As part of the American Medical Research Expedition to Everest in 1981, we measured hemoglobin concentration, red cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), Po2 at which hemoglobin is 50% saturated (P50), and acid-base status in expedition members at various altitudes. All measurements were made in expedition laboratories and, with the exception of samples from the South Col of Mt. Everest (8,050 m), within 2 h of blood collection. In vivo conditions were estimated from direct measurements of arterial blood gases and pH or inferred from base excess and alveolar PCO2. As expected, increased 2,3-DPG

This study investigated the performance, physiological, and anthropometric changes in a 28-year-old female following an 1130 km Antarctic ski expedition. Data showed that the participant performed low-intensity ski trekking (LIST, ∼62% maximal heart rate) ∼9 h·day-1 for 46 days of the total of 49 expedition days. Estimations indicated that the mean energy intake during the trek (∼15 MJ·day-1/∼3589 kcal·day-1) was ∼75% greater than that prior to the event (∼8.6 MJ·day-1/∼2048 kcal·day-1), and dietary energy distribution of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins changed from a ∼53/30/17 ratio pre-exp

BACKGROUND: In 2013 five polar explorers attempted to complete the first Trans-Antarctic Winter Traverse (TAWT). This study presents the ophthalmological findings for this group, who overwintered in Antarctica as part of the White Mars Human Science Protocol. Antarctic crews are exposed to extreme cold, chronic hypoxia and altered day-night cycles. Previous studies of Antarctic explorers have focused on the prolonged effect of ultraviolet radiation including the development of ultraviolet keratitis and accelerated cataract formation. This is the first study of its kind to investigate the effec

Scurvy, caused by lack of vitamin C, was a major problem for polar explorers. It may have contributed to the general ill-health of the members of Scott's polar party in 1912 but their deaths are more likely to have been caused by a combination of frostbite, malnutrition and hypothermia. Some have argued that Oates's war wound in particular suffered dehiscence caused by a lack of vitamin C, but there is little evidence to support this. At the time, many doctors in Britain overlooked the results of the experiments by Axel Holst and Theodor Frølich which showed the effects of nutritional deficien

METEI (Medical Expedition to Easter Island) was a Canadian-led expedition to Easter Island in 1964 that led to the discovery of rapamycin, launching a billion-dollar drug industry and major field of biomedical research. Stanley's Dream, by medical historian Jacalyn Duffin, provides remarkable details about METEI and raises important and timely questions about systemic bias in biomedical studies, the relationship between science and geopolitics, as well as obligations of pharmaceutical companies to indigenous communities. As such, this book is a must-read for those interested in the intersectio

Thumb injuries are common in athletes and present a challenging opportunity for upper extremity physicians. Common injuries include metacarpal base fractures (Bennett and Rolando types), ulnar and radial collateral ligament injuries, dislocation of the carpometacarpal and metacarpophalangeal joints, and phalanx fractures. This review, although not exhaustive, highlights some of the most common thumb injuries in athletes. The treating physician must balance pressure from athletes, parents, coaches, and executives to expedite return to play with the long-term well-being of the athlete. Operative

BACKGROUND: Screening for asymptomatic Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) among men has not been recommended because feasibility and efficacy are unknown. Check It is a seek-test-treat community-based Ct screening program for African American men who have sex with women and who are 15 to 24 years of age. This is an evaluation of adaptations made to the program aimed at improving index/partner notification and treatment rates.
METHODS: The original Check It intervention included free testing and treatment, contact tracing performed by a third party, expedited index therapy, and expedited partner thera

High Alt Med Biol. 17:315-322, 2016.-The lay public, media, and medical experts have expressed concern about the ethics of climbers using medications to improve performance and increase the odds of summit success while climbing at high altitude, but the true incidence of this practice remains unclear. We conducted an anonymous survey of climbers who have attempted to climb Mt. Everest to gather information about medication use and attitudes toward medication and
