OBJECTIVE: To identify primary empirical research related specifically to feelings of disgust associated with malodorous chronic cutaneous wounds.
METHOD: A rapid review of the literature using the key words disgust; wounds; malodour and psychosocial.
RESULTS: A total of 163 papers were retrieved with seven being included for the final review. Themes emanating from the review were malodour, health-care professionals coping with malodour and disgust. We present here seven cases of idiopathic multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD) showing effusion at the initial clinical presentation. This series includes a high proportion of middle-aged and elderly females (5/7). Various autoantibodies were detected in six cases. Anemia (Hb < 10 g/dl) was detected in four cases, leukocytosis (WBC > 10 × 10(9)/l) in three and thrombycytopenia (<100 × 10(9)/l) in five. Examining the activity of adenosine deaminase in the pleural fluids of 69 patients with tuberculous pleurisy of various etiology from the clinics of Armenia indicated that it was greater than the threshold value of 20 U/L in 95.7 of 47 patients with tuberculous pleurisy. The specificity of this parameter for this disease was 0.91. The prognostic value of the test with positive and negative results was 0.96 and 0.94, respectively. The diagnostic value of the ADA test was 0.94.

Among 179 children and adolescents, tuberculous exudative pleurisy was identified in 157 (87.71%), parapneumonic pleurisy in 19 (10.61%), tumoral pleurisy in 2 (1.12%), posttraumatic pleurisy in 1 (0.56%). The histological study of parietal biopsy specimens (n = 103) and the biological test with the specimen (n = 24) provided evidence for pleural tuberculosis in 83.33% of the examined patients with tuberculous pleurisy.
