The author reports on Demodex folliculorum ("hair follicle mite"), a frequent and widespread parasite. These mites are found in hair follicles of eyelashes in particular. In ophthalmology they are responsible for chronic eczematous blepharitis ("blepharitis acarica") with trichiasis and madarosis. Therapy is unsatisfactory. Prostaglandin analogs are commonly used in the treatment of glaucoma. They are a safe and effective treatment associated with few side effects. Common local side effects include conjunctival hyperemia, iris pigmentation, and eyelash hypertrichosis. The authors present a case of a patient using travoprost treatment for primary open-angle glaucoma, who underwent excision of a lower eyelid basal cell carcinoma and reconstruction with an upper eyelid tarsoconjunctival flap and overlying skin graft. The patient developed hypertrichosis of the skin graft attributable to prostaglandin analog use.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to examine Demodex survival in makeup cosmetics, i.e., powder cream, mascara, and lipstick, and to determine whether cosmetics shared with others can be a source of D. folliculorum infection.

PURPOSE: A case of trichotillomania, or compulsive hair-pulling, involving the eyelids is presented to alert ophthalmologists to this common, but frequently overlooked cause of eyelash and eyebrow alopecia.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Clinical records of a 33-year-old woman suffering from trichotillomania were reviewed. Compulsive hair-pulling began in childhood and had become chronic. Psychiatric intervention was unsuccessful.

Epiblepharon is a common, often unrecognized cause of epiphora and ocular irritation in the child. Epiblepharon consists of an extra fold of eyelid skin and orbicularis muscle overlying an eyelid margin. Occasionally an epiblepharon can push the lashes against the sensitive corneas, especially in downgaze. This paper illustrates epiblepharon and stresses the need for eyelid margin examination in downgaze in the child with epiphora or conjunctivitis.
